  • Yesterday Team Holcim-PRB crash-gybed after an autopilot issue, resulting in an all-hands-on-deck situation to right the boat and get back on their way. However this endeavour led the two top battens of the mainsail to break, which the crew had to quickly handle to resume the pursue of Team Malizia.

      Kevin seems to have a very special and strong character but I have this feeling his attitude might be a reason he broke his boat in the last Vendee Globe. There is some distinct sportive aggressiveness that is a above average and that might lead to overestimate your boats capacity. Sorry for my bad english...

    You were catching Melizia and to have a crash gybe caused by an auto pilot issue shows how quickly things get out of control. Well done to all the team to keep their cool and control the boat. Shame two battens snapped in the gybe.

    • @timlolxP
      @timlolxP Рік тому +2

      @@gerry45 So I guess you pushed your boat to the limit in these conditions, sailed as fast as possible and not just stayed safe. These guys are pushing in these conditions. If the mission was just to reach the finish line without breaking anything, then they would do that. This would be a hell of a lot less interesting to watch.
      The VO65 were known as durable racing boats but even there many things broke. Sure the Imocas are more fragile but when you push things break.
      I think you get the difference.

      It’s called « chinese jibe », an involuntary jibe while sailing with the wind in the back. You may find plenty of videos explaining it better than me, the cause was a failure of the autopilot, and the result, two broken battens, which is not that critical

      Yeah. Bring back the VO65s.
      I sent a note to 11th Hour that said I sure don’t recall the VOs having all these issues. Broken rudders. Delamination. Multiple destroyed sails. Broken foils. And much much more. Many things we likely don’t even know about.
      Their response. “We hear you”.
      This race is not nearly as interesting. Fewer boats. Fewer crew, not as many human interest stories. Race not that competitive. I followed every second of the prior 3 races. This one is just boring. Sorry.
      These boats are simply not that suitable for this race.

    • @Pelican5077
      @Pelican5077 Рік тому +1

      @@eugenedreyer4805 No disagreement there. However, and I get it’s just my view, having sailed for 45 years, full time liveaboard now for 13 years, crossed many oceans, with over 100k sea miles with my wife, what they are doing is not really sailing. They are taking a barely seaworthy piece of carbon fiber, utilizing technology unavailable to anyone, not understandable by most, living inside a cocoon, and praying the boat doesn’t disintegrate before they reach port. Just so they can occasionally go a few knots faster than the VOs. They ruined what has been a great race for many decades.
      Moreover, in the long history of the race, the average number of entries is 13 per event. Average crew size is 9. That is over 100 sailors participating each race, gaining experience, 100 stories to feature, 100 hometowns with support, the list is endless. This race, 5 boats and 20 sailors. How does that help promote ocean racing? Obviously it doesn’t. I’d bet a lot of money that in the end crowds are down, views are down, and the engagement compared to the last race just isn’t there.
      The onboard video is less exciting. The interviews are with the same people over and over. Last race the coverage was incredible and with many more boats and multiple fleet divergences there was a lot of glued to the video kind of stuff. This race is just a bore.
      What they should have done was race both fleets. But my bet is that they did not do that because they were afraid the VOs would show up their prized IMOCAS. When you start 5 boats on the SO leg, 1 returns to port immediately, one breaks both rudders 5 days in, one shreds their main and becomes uncompetitive, one has serious hull delamination forcing them to baby the boat for nearly the entire leg, what’s the point. Sailing is an outdoor exposed to the elements adventure. Next race they might as well use boats powered with electric engines. If they are going to live in a cocoon no need to actually use sails.
      As I said, when I sent a note to 11th hour referencing the fact that the fleet did not have all of these issues with the VOs their response “we hear ye” to me said it all.
      The people who made the decision to use these boats thereby restricting the number of entries and sailors need to be replaced.

    • @Pelican5077
      @Pelican5077 Рік тому +1

      @@gwebster6600 FOFL. Actually I did hold back. You tell me. More interesting with a dozen boats, specifically built for the conditions, 100 sailors and a variety of divergent routing choices. Or, 5 boats, 20 sailors in what amounts to a single route 12000 mile drag race. Seems clear to me.
      Look, even the Race Report show realizes the entire thing is weak. Last race they were on multiple times per week and the shows lasted an hour. Features included racer profiles, visits to home towns, sit down interviews, things that even non sailors can enjoy. This race twice a week for 20 minutes, mostly about the nuances of weather and repairing boats.
      When the crew of 11th hour is seemingly agreeing with me, that about says it all.

      a) There is a financial crisis in the Ocean Race and so not enough money for
      - big fleet
      - big crews
      - many full equipped stop overs
      - exceptional official coverage on media
      b) No structural issues on the boats in previous races? Really?

    Total respect for the teams and crews but the race organisers are missing a trick. The coverage is pitiful and the lack of fan engagement diabolical; seemingly they don’t want fans and they don’t want to sell any merchandise.

      Well, this does not apply to Malizia, their engagement of the fans is just brilliant and the OBR has done a great job. All the other teams, were unfortunately far behind in view of the quality of the content.
      If you follow the development of the ideas how to create stories on Malizia, most of the script was written in real time and that is truly a missed opportunity by the ocean race bod. They should have had a real movie director to guide the OBRs from day one.
      And the second problem is, the other boats are so tense into competition and do not want to share any weaknesses and emotions. Without that, no story. Furthermore all vessels except Malizia are small caves which are getting very depressive on such a long ride. What is Boris, 1,90mts? And he was able to stand in full stretch in the cabin. So spirits were high and mood was great which leads to good content in the long run.
