The apostolic fathers are church fathers thought to have known some of the apostles. This is a look at six publications which collect their works into 1 or 2 volumes.
Erratum: at 22:12 I say that the Penguin has "prefects" and Ante-Nicene Fathers has "rulers and kings" but it is the other way around.

In context, even with the more wooden, literal choice of wording it is clear Clement is talking about Paul being killed for his beliefs.
