Just a suggestion: instead of taking the time to scrape the platter with the spoon, use the bread to swipe it all up and save time. Besides, the gravy on the platter would help the bread go down more easily! I really wanted you to beat Molly's time. Massive challenge and a great win!
That looks delicious! They call it cottage pie cause it’s made with ground beef. Real shepherds pie is made with ground lamb. Hence the “shepherd” Great Job!!!
In the Americas, we don't readily have minced lamb so this is what our Irish immigrants had to work with and they called it shepherd's pie so we call it shepherd's pie
Weird... so many comments explaining the difference between cottage and shepherd's pie, when Joel CLEARLY explained it in the video. Every video I have watched (I watched many recipe videos because I wanted to make it) gets so many people in the comments in a tiffy that we call it shepherd's pie. Good grief, it's really NOT that serious.
I know right? Reminds me of a Pennsylvania Dutch page I follow on FB. Everyone argues about what a real pot pie is. I grew up in Ohio, and our pot pie was baked in a crust (like pie). I married a man from PA. His aunt made pot pie with square noodles, (no crust). We always called that chicken and noodles. I was perplexed. 🤔 Soooo it's made in a "pot" with noodles but not a pie. And the pie crust version is both, (started in a pot and finished in a pie crust). I guess it depends on where you grow up. Either way it's delicious food. 😋 BTW, I only eat fish or poultry, so I make my Shepherds/Cottage pie with ground chicken or turkey. 😉
I agree ladies, thats like arguing over what came first, the chicken or the egg & in the end we eat both...soooooo it really doesn't matter in my opinion Lol...& if you make it with Turkey you can always call it Gobble Pie 🥧 😊
For anyone wondering typically a shepherds pie is made with minced lamb, peas, carrots and herbs then mashed potato on top, a cottage pie is made with minced beef, onions and beef gravy with mashed potato and cheese on top 😊 and yes in from the UK so make both of these ALOT lol
I just love the facial reactions of people walking by and watching you eat. Is there ever a candy-eating contest if so I'm pretty good at eating candy. Keep up the great work brother.
As a big eater that isnt pro (just out eats all peers who think they can eat).. I would have spread the shepards pie on the bread. The mash potatoes help get down solids easier. Im not professional and Joel always amazes me in every video and im surprised he saved all of the bread for last. Loved the video!!!! Excited to see another.
Well done Joel! not just for eating like a champion, but also explaining the cottage pie/shepherds pie difference..... I would've been THAT guy hahahah
Looks fab!!! Not gone through all the comments but just for clarification Shepherds pie is made with lamb mince and Cottage pie is made with beef, so this definitely was Cottage pie and it looked bloody lovely :)
Hi Joel! Thanks so much for coming out and absolutely destroying our Shepard’s Pie challenge. You did amazing and we appreciate you giving us a shout out! But my only question is, why didn’t you leave a tip? Did you forget or do you not usually tip at all when you literally don’t have to spend a dime in an establishment? Just curious because the chef, owner, and myself made sure you and your friend were provided excellent service and praise for finishing our challenge. Let me know so I’m not salty anymore!
That looks so good. I've never had it before. Guess I will have to try it now. The challenges you do make me want to try new foods. Love your channel. Wtg on the win!😁👊💪

Congrats Joel!!, you killed another clean tray/plate challenge...my first time seeing a Sheppards Pie challenge would love to taste it with lamb, I'm sure it tasted as good as it looks. Yummers on this one 😊

Shepherds pie = Lamb- shepherd's pie has the peaks made out of potatoes aka looks like small hills 😂 and cottage pie = beef and has slices of potatoes to replicate the roof of old cottages... that's how I was taught being raised, good man Joel u aced it 😀
Schlitz Park is just the area where the Schlitz brewery operated. You should have actually walked down by the lake. Some really good views and paths out into the water.
Cottage pie= beef Shepherd's pie=lamb I was corrected by several Irish families. No matter, it looked delicious!! I hope your Wisconsin visit was terrific!!!
im British so just little bit of helpful info - shepherds pie is made with lamb (a shepherd and his flock) and a cottage pie is made with beef (farm cottage on dairy or cattle farm) - otherwise they're identical!
Hello everyone, Me being an English person, I would say, Cottage Pie is with beef, Shepherd's Pie certainly with Lamb. But, when you add cheese into the equation that then becomes a Cumberland Pie. The cheese should be between the mince and mashed potatoes.
Our “shepherd’s pie” I always ate as a kid was ground beef, mashed potatoes, corn and bacon on the top. It was very good and filling. You plowed through that in spite of the difficulty.
sheperds pie is made with lamb, the clue is in the name. Sheperds look after flocks of sheep. I suppose they are an Irish pub so we can forgive them. Whatever you want to call it it was huge and looked delicious, hats off to you for finishing that.
Lol come on and chilli use to be a fast pile of beans and whatever the soldiers could find who gives a rats ass it's better with beef than it ever was with lamb chill out bro lmao
I also didn't know this until I did my research. When it is made with beef it is called Cottage pie. Just recently fell in love with this dish. Never had it before but it was delicious.
@@prestonreeves4143 wow, you sound more upset than the original comment. I think it's okay to pay homage to the dish and where it comes from. It's a learning experience, if you choose to look at it that way. But yes, either way it is delicious.

We call it shepherds pie when it’s made with lamb or venison. Cottage pie when it is made with beef hamburger. Don’t know why, just the way it is here in SoCal. I make cottage pie probably once a month or so as I always double the recipe and put one in freezer. Note to anyone planning on making this…use real potatoes, not instant potatoes.
