I've had all three. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but at the end of the day I'm much more productive and inspired with the Yamaha. Performance mode and Master mode along with on the fly editing makes the Yamaha the one for me, not to mention flash playback so i can rip with my own recordings! But none of them are poor or 'not good enough'. In the end, it comes down to the player. ~best
I believe, at this price category and level, all these digital pianos are good quality. It's only matter of your taste, music style which one is best for you. Good demo, thank you for the upload.
Roland then Kurzweil then Yamaha. None were bad but prefer the grand piano sound from Roland. I was very impressed with the Kurzweil though! I would not say no to one.
They all sound like darn good pianos. Like acoustic pianos it comes down to a very personal preference. Unlike acoustic pianos every one (model) will sound identical. Every acoustic sounds slightly to greatly different depending on the set-up and the wood which varies. They all sounded just like.. a piano. Great demo!
Yamaha and Roland are the most versatile with great sound... each brand have there own strength! Yamaha sound more pure and hi resolution. Roland have more character but have less depth in most of the patch... You can produce great music with both! Its all about learning your tools and skills.
They all sound wonderful. A nice test of stage keyboards (not workstations). I think I liked the Roland RD700NX the best for piano. Kurzweil was 2nd and Yamaha 3rd. But it was really close. All could be tweaked to your liking. Honestly, with these boards I think it comes down to the other sounds and the editing features. The Kurzweil really wins a lot of the other sounds IMHO. Nice board. really considering that Kurzweil as my main 88-key gig board and controller for my studio.
I've been playing Yamaha and Roland keyboards for 18 years. For me Yamaha has always won for pianos and electric pianos whereas Roland has always won at clavinet, strings, and most other sounds. I never felt I could do without having both keyboards. Ive never cared for kurzweil including this video although their pads were nicest here but I think you can get better pads out of the Yamaha and Roland. I tried the rd700 in the store and wasnt sold on it. I was using a yamaha s70xs along with a Roland xp-30 for years until I purchased a mox6 for easier transport.

The yamaha piano sound is very very warm and nice. I would chose it. Some sounds sound better in the Kurzweil but for me, Yamaha would be my choice. Nice playing, thanks for this demo.
Kurzweil has better sustain on piano sound and sounds more musical to me. Roland Rhodes has a blat sound in the bass which is still on their new pianos RD88

Hi - I bought a perfect condition used SP4-8 a couple yrs ago. Only reason I’m thinking upgrading is ability fir half-pedalling, which I’ve REALLY missed. But I know the SP6 does half pedalling, and I don’t really need the 9 sliders as I’ve also got a Roland VR-700 Combo which has real drawbars, superb Hammond emulation and impeccable organ keybed. Do you still have your SP4-8?
@@TheAntonist that’s a good sign! Maybe as durable as the K2500 series have been. I saw Elton John on his farewell tour here in Perth Australia recently and his backing keyboardist had two K2500’s and a Yamaha ?Motif?, but played 80% on the K’s ;-)
I own the roland rd-700nx you guys could always check my videos if you feel this is biased. I find the Roland is a bit sharper but the eq is easily altered
Hands down, Kurzweil. 2nd Yamaha, very distant 3rd Roland. I would buy Kurzweil but I worry about the long term stability of the company. They seem to have made some very poor decisions in the past that wrecked them financially.
Kurzweil still seem to be around ;-) Pc4, Forte, Artis, SP6 formidable sounds and VAST infinitely tweakable to create pretty much anything with partner desktop / iOS apps ;-)
After all that's been said & done, at the end of the day, the Yamaha s90 xs despite not being stereo INMHO still has the best overall quality among the rest most particularly the piano sound... 2nd Roland, last Kurzweil...
I have tested Piano sounds of 4 keyboards. Number one: Kurzweil Artis has got a very respect Piano sound ever, hammer action keys are good. Number two: Korg Kronos, German Grand Number three: Yamaha S90XS, well the Grand Piano is very good, not much less the Kronos Number forth: RD-700NX, I honestly think Piano sound from RD-700NX is not really "acoustic" at all. Thus, oh my god, the keys are defect and flaw too much. When you play like 3 months, and you hit orchestra or Strings, or Piano with 10 fingers, the sounds from Mechanical keys will flow, you can hear it clearly. Overal, Kur Artis and S90XS have got a very acoustic hammer action keys. It's much be convenient for those people playing Piano style. Korg Kronos is good sounding, but less Mechanical keys comparing to Kur and Yamaha. And yes, it's my own opinion.
Roland is the best under keyboard feeling, sounds, other presets, effects and general build quality. Kurzweil is second but keyboard is definitely not as good as Roland's one. The two other are still far from optimal level. I own the RD-700NX and before purchasing I tested them all but the Artis that wasn't released yet, I tested the PC3-K8 and put second mostly for the feeling I had with the keyboard.

To me... the most important feature is the action and how it responds. I use these keyboards as a controller and midi into my DAW using sample libs like White Grand, Scarbee Mark I, and VSTi Synths.
I've owned a Kurzweil sp4-8 and although the Rhodes sounds great in the mid and lower registers it sounds completely fake and toy like in the upper. It's a shame too cause its got that raw, slightly muddy vintage sound. The Roland sounded the most consistent throughout in this comparison, but maybe a little on the clean side. Yamaha Cp4 would've been a better contender.
B4 i give my little 2 cents, let me just say, you can't go wrong with either board . I own Yamaha & Korg keyboards, & I have always loved Roland & Kurzweil products . IMHO, The Yamaha sounded more brighter/cleaner, The Kurzweil sounded more authentic, I love the look of the Roland,& the Roland had a few nice sounds . Let me end my opinion with this, there is no keyboard/synth that has a better guitar patch, than Yamaha's Voodoo man,their strings are also nice . Kurzweil's voices patch (Take 6) did the patch for them, no other keyboard can compete with their oohs & aahs etc. Roland always give you great sounds for today's type of music, & Roland have stepped their game up on the piano sounds 2 . Price would be my determining factor for these 3 boards !
Not really. Motif is a workstation, and this seems to be a stage piano shootout. So, the S90 is a very fari match for the Roland RD, although I'd choose S90ES, because in my opinion, they screwed up the looks of the instrument with the EX model. And sound really doesn't matter as much as the dynamic feel of the keyboard action. You can always hoop up Integra-7 sound module and get all sound you want from the full collection of SRX boards in it.
in My opinion (Have a Nord Electro 4 HP) Piano - Rd700 - Artis - S90 Rhodes - Artis - Rd700 - S90 Hammonds: Artis, but not compares to Organ Section on Nord Electro.
I have play the piano for a very long time, actually i am only interested in piano patch of a synth. so after a have compared the piano sounds of these 3 keybaords closely, my personal opinion is, Kurzweil has the best piano sound. 1, roland's key action with PHAIII is actually the best among the 3 models, and roland proclaims that they have the flagship Supernatural sound installed. If you not compare with kurzweil, maybe we can imagine how good roland could be. But if you listen closely, you will find roland's sound is very thin and artificial. Superficially that sound is just like the authentic acustic piano, but actually not. the reverb is so fake, resonance is also very fake to me. 2. kurzweil artist uses modelling technology if i guess right, if gives the pianist a very good verlocity control of its key action, it will not let keyboardist feel a velocity gap while they playing from pianissimo to fortissimo, you can never judge whether kurzweil has the most authentic piano sound or not, because kurzweil never uses the real sample technology, that is for me even better. 3. yamaha S90 has a balanced key action (not progressively action) alone that is already one fatal weak point for pianist. i don't know the market prices of these 3 models, but if i buy one model for its piano sound and key action, i will definitely choose the kurzweil for its amzing impressive piano sound. roland the next.. yamaha less possible....
Ya, you can really hear the stereo FX on the Kurzweil but not on the others, plus you can see the 2 cables on the outputs vs. the other 2 keyboards having 1. That absolutely would make people more biased to the Kurzweil for sure.
Which is better for acoustic sounds like acoustic guitars, electric guitars, electric piano with its effects on it too and acoustic pianos, brass, orchestral ensembles, strings? The S90XS, S90ES, or Yamaha MOXF8, or Roland RD700nx, or Kurzweil PC3K8 or PC3A8, or Artis? Could you break it down now after trying these? And have you tried any of the others I mentioned above?
+Steve J The Yamaha will blow you away with its sounds & feel, the Voodoo Man patch on the Yamaha is the absolute best guitar patch you will hear on any keyboard ever ! The Kurzweil's voice patch is absolutely awesome( the oohs & aahs are done by Take 6, & Kurzweil's KB3 organ mode is fantastic ! You will be satisfied with any of these boards, but imho, I'de take the Yamaha S90XS easily, or either a Yamaha Motif XF . The S90XS is discontinued, so you should be able to get 1 for cheap, good luck .
over the Roland FP-80? I like the accompaniment ensembles in the FP-80 you can play over top of that really follow what chords you are playing to a tee as well as the speakers built in that are phenomenl as monitors on stage or even just in a home environment disperse very nice as an array. THe feel or action is quite incredible as on the V-Piano too the piano is very rich and clean on it except lacking sounds. Anything that can compare to the Roland FP-80 with built in speakers even if it doesn't but has accompanient ensembles to play with where you get more sounds and very good piano action responses and feel? The Yamaha S90XS sounds interesting. I always like their acoustic sounds like guitars and electric pianos, strings, and horns and drums. The Motif is enormous in price i think better is the Yamaha MOXF8. Just hard to know what to choose. Then their is the Kurzwell Artis or Kurzweil PC3K8.
Steve J You have to consider price, then make up your mind if you want a stage piano, or workstation with sampling capabilities . You will not go wrong with any of the keyboards you mentioned . Unless you need a board right at this moment for gigging or studio, if you can wait about 4 months, the Namm show will probally have new options, good luck .
i was wondering what you think of the Yamaha MOXF8, Roland RD-800, Kurzweil PC3K8 or Korg Kronos X? For the price the MOXF8 seems good especially loading flash memory. A guy named Jamal from www.gospelmusicians.com sells incredible sounds for that thing and would be like turning that keyboard into a Ferrari. Then I heard the Kurzweil PC3K8. So i don't know. I like the draw bars simulation display with sliders, good acoustic pianos, electric pianos, horns, strings, bass, acoustic guitars, percussion, especially the hands-on effects built you can modify on the fly and faders you can fade in and out layered sounds in one preset. Great if you want to pull in or pull out a sound underneath another sound like say strings or pad sounds. I like loopers or accompaniment having rhythm sections to back you when jamming on an idea which is useful for creating ideas. Or being able to record with a built-in multi-track recorder even being able to plug in a mic or guitar or sing harmonies. I was blown away by Casio how they came up with a terrific stage piano called the Privia PX-5S. The sounds you can load into it are crazy sensational. The board is worth only 1000 bucks. So one can add stand alone stuff like maybe a multi track recorder, loop station, effects processor, backing track module like the Roland one called the Bk7m if you wanted since your not spending so much on an "all-in-one" workstation or workhorse.
The keyboard player was awesome, but he has a look on his face like "I don't wanna be here". Man, oh, man... if I had his skills and talent with three cool expensive toys in front of me like that, I'd have the biggest grin on the planet plastered all over my face
Parece que Kurzweil y Roland suenan mejor que el Yamaha, (comparando mas entre sonidos de piano) ya que los primeros 2 tienen como un sonido mas envolvente. Y entre Kurzweil y Roland parece que el primero tiene mas fidelidad de sonidos y mas naturales. Usualmente Roland tiene teclados con sonidos de piano mas sinteticos como un ejemplo esta los Fantom que no tienen buen sonido de pianos pero en los demas sonidos si, pero en este modelo RD700 suena mas real y natural. Pero en lo personal tomando en cuenta varios factores prefiero al Yamaha S90 solo que mas el s90 ES que el s90 EX.
Todos los sonidos del S90 XS son los mismos que el Motif XS, ahora el piano que usa es el Natural S6 , que en en el video usa una variación del Piano S6

It may be my opinion that the s90es is the best but I think a lot of people would agree
Yamaha sounds very shitty here because it is recorded in mono. It is optimized for stereo output. In mono mode it is at 12% of the keyboard's capacity.
@@bobcatt2294 Yes, the S90XS is also in stereo, this channel has always done its tests in stereo. The only thing that didn't convince me was that some of the Yamaha sounds were not the best chosen, since they are the same as the MOTIF XS.
WRT the Piano Solo sections, I am a pianist and prefer Acoustic any day. However, I love the Roland's Soft and Warm Tone. Yamaha's is almost as good. But the Kurzwell is too industrial. Meh.
Acoustic Grand Yamaha and Roland tie for 1st. But I wouldn't throw the Kerzweil outa bed who cares about the rest . Everything else is just too subjective.
I think Roland makes very good digital pianos. Kurzweil also makes good sounding digital pianos. The headroom of the Roland still dominating the league on this comparison. However the A90xs besides have a very usable acoustic piano, perhaps not that big as the Roland, (nothing really important, actually it can't be fixed with a little EQ), the A90xs cannot be defeated creating ridiculously convincing Rhodes pianos, Whirly and even Rodes dynomized pianos. You can even emulate different hammers densities using the cutoff filter etc . . . If I had the budget probably i would buy the Roland for acoustics and the Yamaha for the electrics.
Well, the piano and el. piano sounds seems to be little bit more alive on the Yamaha, organs and strings are bad on all instruments and the lead sounds are OK on Kurz and Roland, while Yamaha sounds awful because of slow pitch refresh rate. I don't understand from this video what type of Portamento Kurzweil implements (linear or logarithmic) and whether it is supported on Roland.

To me... the most important feature is the action and how it responds. I use these keyboards as a controller and midi into my DAW using sample libs like White Grand, Scarbee Mark I, and VSTi Synths.
S90XS and Motif XS have identical sounds piano S6, and more. S90XS not have sampler, and sequencer.

I've owned a Kurzweil sp4-8 and although the Rhodes sounds great in the mid and lower registers it sounds completely fake and toy like in the upper. It's a shame too cause its got that raw, slightly muddy vintage sound. The Roland sounded the most consistent throughout in this comparison, but maybe a little on the clean side. Yamaha Cp4 would've been a better contender.

I think the problem is Yamaha seems to use mono cable. Yamaha sound looks like lighter than ours.
B4 i give my little 2 cents, let me just say, you can't go wrong with either board . I own Yamaha & Korg keyboards, & I have always loved Roland & Kurzweil products . IMHO, The Yamaha sounded more brighter/cleaner, The Kurzweil sounded more authentic, I love the look of the Roland,& the Roland had a few nice sounds . Let me end my opinion with this, there is no keyboard/synth that has a better guitar patch, than Yamaha's Voodoo man,their strings are also nice . Kurzweil's voices patch (Take 6) did the patch for them, no other keyboard can compete with their oohs & aahs etc. Roland always give you great sounds for today's type of music, & Roland have stepped their game up on the piano sounds 2 . Price would be my determining factor for these 3 boards !
Oh 1 last thing, Yamaha & Kurzweil need to get with the Touchscreen tech ASAP!
Not really. Motif is a workstation, and this seems to be a stage piano shootout. So, the S90 is a very fari match for the Roland RD, although I'd choose S90ES, because in my opinion, they screwed up the looks of the instrument with the EX model. And sound really doesn't matter as much as the dynamic feel of the keyboard action. You can always hoop up Integra-7 sound module and get all sound you want from the full collection of SRX boards in it.
i think kuz is best. it is like real grandpiano.
roland has warm natural sound...kurzweil...too much mid range....yamaha....too warm...but it would be my 2nd choice.

I have play the piano for a very long time, actually i am only interested in piano patch of a synth. so after a have compared the piano sounds of these 3 keybaords closely, my personal opinion is, Kurzweil has the best piano sound.
1, roland's key action with PHAIII is actually the best among the 3 models, and roland proclaims that they have the flagship Supernatural sound installed. If you not compare with kurzweil, maybe we can imagine how good roland could be. But if you listen closely, you will find roland's sound is very thin and artificial. Superficially that sound is just like the authentic acustic piano, but actually not. the reverb is so fake, resonance is also very fake to me.
2. kurzweil artist uses modelling technology if i guess right, if gives the pianist a very good verlocity control of its key action, it will not let keyboardist feel a velocity gap while they playing from pianissimo to fortissimo, you can never judge whether kurzweil has the most authentic piano sound or not, because kurzweil never uses the real sample technology, that is for me even better.
3. yamaha S90 has a balanced key action (not progressively action) alone that is already one fatal weak point for pianist.
i don't know the market prices of these 3 models, but if i buy one model for its piano sound and key action, i will definitely choose the kurzweil for its amzing impressive piano sound. roland the next.. yamaha less possible....
Why is only kurzweil recorded in stereo?
Ya, you can really hear the stereo FX on the Kurzweil but not on the others, plus you can see the 2 cables on the outputs vs. the other 2 keyboards having 1. That absolutely would make people more biased to the Kurzweil for sure.

Which is better for acoustic sounds like acoustic guitars, electric guitars, electric piano with its effects on it too and acoustic pianos, brass, orchestral ensembles, strings? The S90XS, S90ES, or Yamaha MOXF8, or Roland RD700nx, or Kurzweil PC3K8 or PC3A8, or Artis? Could you break it down now after trying these? And have you tried any of the others I mentioned above?
+Steve J The Yamaha will blow you away with its sounds & feel, the Voodoo Man patch on the Yamaha is the absolute best guitar patch you will hear on any keyboard ever ! The Kurzweil's voice patch is absolutely awesome( the oohs & aahs are done by Take 6, & Kurzweil's KB3 organ mode is fantastic ! You will be satisfied with any of these boards, but imho, I'de take the Yamaha S90XS easily, or either a Yamaha Motif XF . The S90XS is discontinued, so you should be able to get 1 for cheap, good luck .
over the Roland FP-80? I like the accompaniment ensembles in the FP-80 you can play over top of that really follow what chords you are playing to a tee as well as the speakers built in that are phenomenl as monitors on stage or even just in a home environment disperse very nice as an array. THe feel or action is quite incredible as on the V-Piano too the piano is very rich and clean on it except lacking sounds. Anything that can compare to the Roland FP-80 with built in speakers even if it doesn't but has accompanient ensembles to play with where you get more sounds and very good piano action responses and feel? The Yamaha S90XS sounds interesting. I always like their acoustic sounds like guitars and electric pianos, strings, and horns and drums. The Motif is enormous in price i think better is the Yamaha MOXF8. Just hard to know what to choose. Then their is the Kurzwell Artis or Kurzweil PC3K8.
Steve J You have to consider price, then make up your mind if you want a stage piano, or workstation with sampling capabilities . You will not go wrong with any of the keyboards you mentioned . Unless you need a board right at this moment for gigging or studio, if you can wait about 4 months, the Namm show will probally have new options, good luck .

i was wondering what you think of the Yamaha MOXF8, Roland RD-800, Kurzweil PC3K8 or Korg Kronos X? For the price the MOXF8 seems good especially loading flash memory. A guy named Jamal from www.gospelmusicians.com sells incredible sounds for that thing and would be like turning that keyboard into a Ferrari. Then I heard the Kurzweil PC3K8. So i don't know. I like the draw bars simulation display with sliders, good acoustic pianos, electric pianos, horns, strings, bass, acoustic guitars, percussion, especially the hands-on effects built you can modify on the fly and faders you can fade in and out layered sounds in one preset. Great if you want to pull in or pull out a sound underneath another sound like say strings or pad sounds. I like loopers or accompaniment having rhythm sections to back you when jamming on an idea which is useful for creating ideas. Or being able to record with a built-in multi-track recorder even being able to plug in a mic or guitar or sing harmonies. I was blown away by Casio how they came up with a terrific stage piano called the Privia PX-5S. The sounds you can load into it are crazy sensational. The board is worth only 1000 bucks. So one can add stand alone stuff like maybe a multi track recorder, loop station, effects processor, backing track module like the Roland one called the Bk7m if you wanted since your not spending so much on an "all-in-one" workstation or workhorse.
The keyboard player was awesome, but he has a look on his face like "I don't wanna be here". Man, oh, man... if I had his skills and talent with three cool expensive toys in front of me like that, I'd have the biggest grin on the planet plastered all over my face

Parece que Kurzweil y Roland suenan mejor que el Yamaha, (comparando mas entre sonidos de piano) ya que los primeros 2 tienen como un sonido mas envolvente. Y entre Kurzweil y Roland parece que el primero tiene mas fidelidad de sonidos y mas naturales. Usualmente Roland tiene teclados con sonidos de piano mas sinteticos como un ejemplo esta los Fantom que no tienen buen sonido de pianos pero en los demas sonidos si, pero en este modelo RD700 suena mas real y natural. Pero en lo personal tomando en cuenta varios factores prefiero al Yamaha S90 solo que mas el s90 ES que el s90 EX.
Todos los sonidos del S90 XS son los mismos que el Motif XS, ahora el piano que usa es el Natural S6 , que en en el video usa una variación del Piano S6

yeah sound good but a bit not as rugged as say a Motif or even Roland RD700nx that is made of metal or harder material. Even the keys seem too flimsy.

It may be my opinion that the s90es is the best but I think a lot of people would agree

Yamaha sounds very shitty here because it is recorded in mono. It is optimized for stereo output. In mono mode it is at 12% of the keyboard's capacity.
Needed to hear this, was wondering about the XS. Why did the presenter do this? Sitting on the fence for a used mint condition XS8.

@@bobcatt2294 Yes, the S90XS is also in stereo, this channel has always done its tests in stereo. The only thing that didn't convince me was that some of the Yamaha sounds were not the best chosen, since they are the same as the MOTIF XS.
WRT the Piano Solo sections, I am a pianist and prefer Acoustic any day. However, I love the Roland's Soft and Warm Tone. Yamaha's is almost as good. But the Kurzwell is too industrial. Meh.
Acoustic Grand Yamaha and Roland tie for 1st. But I wouldn't throw the Kerzweil outa bed who cares about the rest . Everything else is just too subjective.
I think Roland makes very good digital pianos. Kurzweil also makes good sounding digital pianos. The headroom of the Roland still dominating the league on this comparison. However the A90xs besides have a very usable acoustic piano, perhaps not that big as the Roland, (nothing really important, actually it can't be fixed with a little EQ), the A90xs cannot be defeated creating ridiculously convincing Rhodes pianos, Whirly and even Rodes dynomized pianos. You can even emulate different hammers densities using the cutoff filter etc . . . If I had the budget probably i would buy the Roland for acoustics and the Yamaha for the electrics.

Well, the piano and el. piano sounds seems to be little bit more alive on the Yamaha, organs and strings are bad on all instruments and the lead sounds are OK on Kurz and Roland, while Yamaha sounds awful because of slow pitch refresh rate. I don't understand from this video what type of Portamento Kurzweil implements (linear or logarithmic) and whether it is supported on Roland.
