I suppose you haven't even read or listened to The Bet, or maybe you're a child. Say something else and enlighten us instead of typing "dude wtf" on a video and comment section like this please 🤔
My brother told me this story many years ago, who in turn heard it from my father. It is my favourite fictitious story of all time. My eyes welled- up the first time I ever heard it.
This is my first Antov Chekov's short stories and I have made it my mission to sift through all the stories available on youtube. Thank you for this upload, it was incredible.
The Bet is undoubtedly the most meaningful and realistic story I've ever read. This story was actually on our school curriculum. We studied the story in 10 grade. This story has captivated my soul. The part of Lawyer spending his time in prison is what intrigued me the most. I kinda have the same situation, Since I have been stuck here since ages.
This is a story which speaks volumes about human nature. This pandemic has shown me how well I am able to relate with the story. So many million times I have felt that we can lead a humble and simple life in synchrony with nature, I want to live without fear, that seems to be the priority now. I didn't ever thank God when he allowed me to move around without fear. Now I am thinking of several ways by which I can lead a harmonious life. The ending of this story is a bit strange, someone who is enlightened can always be truthful even if he broke the bet and decided to forego the money.
Maybe that is an argument for the importance of real and meaningful moments. He achieved enlightment with his brain by reading about everything but his heart grew dark due to his isolation. I think he wouldn't live long after his escape. Or he would live among the people as an observer as he was used to reading his books, not being able to understand how important it is to experience "flawed" moments and feel "flawed" emotions.
The narrator sounds like one of the oblivion npc, like the nord men or something? Can't unhear Also, this story reminds me of when I was a teenager, I agreed to eat a whole habañero pepper for a free beer. Well, once I'd chewed and swallowed the pepper and took the first swig of beer, it foamed so badly in my stomach that I couldn't and didn't want to drink it.
tohu there is a channel called Unexplained Mysteries the narrator usually is softly spoken and his voice can help you go to sleep sometimes . ... some of his videos are more soft-spoken than others . I don't know if you would like the subject matter sometimes I don't listen to them but he does have a wonderfully soft and soothing voice ... plus the added bonus is he has an English accent .
I just went back to the Unexplained Mysteries Channel and was very surprised to notice that some of his most recent videos uploaded around June 8th and 9th he is not talking softly but instead is louder and and speaking more quickly , sounding like most everybody else . But like I said if you look around you will notice the majority of his videos his voice is wonderful and very soothing and also good for relaxing and getting sleepy
Voluntary confinement - i remember a character from One Few Over Cuckoo's Nest. Jack Nicholson is surprised to hear that some came into the asylum voluntarily.
I remember reading this in 6th grade and then seeing the Twilight Zone adaptation. I often think of this story when I watch the misdirected greedy people.
I believe that that is easily contested. I respect the idea of knowledge and understanding as well as the lack of pride. But if this man even had half of what I want to be as far as good, with me wanting to be a whole hero and had he lived those experiences versus read about them. Then I believe his real enemy would be death. A wise man once said, better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all. I'd be happy with a decent vehicle right now
Basically, the lawyer learned from isolation and all the stories he read that the possessions of this world are pretty much meaningless compared to wisdom and knowledge like what he found in his "cell". So, he ended up not caring about the 2 million, knowing it would not make him happy compared to the stories he read. So he wasn't killed by the banker, and the previously rich man learned from the lawyer.
Main Character volunteers 15yrs imprisonment over the proposed 5. Why??? Audiences neither like nor respect a fool. A total no-no had it been written today.
Looks to me like Capitol punishment is the way to go then. He will never see humans as human again. To a dangerous criminal that ALREADY DOESN'T think that way. Well...what do you think?
Enlighten me please. I really mean it, as I don't find "The Bet" entertaining, insightful or profound. Given it's enduring for so long, I must be missing quite a bit. Here are the thins that bother me. First, offered "two millions" for 5 years of prison, he counters with 15 years with no additional benefit. Moronic seems charitable. Inconceivable is a better description, which detracted greatly from the story for me. At the end he decides that living life isn't important, that reading about experiences is reality. That shows he went insane. Yet even insane, why would someone walk away from wealth that would allow him to do whatever he wanted for the rest of his life, even if it was just to buy books and read in peace. There must be some deep message here, but what I'm getting is that two people made a bet that had no upside for the banker, and the cost of winning for the lawyer was the prime of his life to be rich for his older years, not a good deal. When he finally wins, the lawyer, who had added 10 years to his sentence for nothing, then refuses the winnings. People doing things against their own self interest for no purpose makes for a useless story for me. Again, I sincerely would love to learn what I'm missing.
Thought the same. The Main Character is a fool and Chekhov tries too hard to be profound. Life's lessons are of greater importance than money and all that hooey. Lousy moral
That was fascinating. That's life, you wonder who is free and who is the prisoner. Hearing my first Chekov story here today.

Ian McKellen was on radio 2 today, Checkhov and William Shakespeare are his favourites! I'm listening to Chekhov for the first time today too!

I consider this a perfect short story in a very sincere and legitimate sense.
Absolutely timeless. It takes place almost in abstraction, platonically.

Oo that's what did in lockdown ! Started loving myself more , studied books , achieving high mental clarity and many more
I did this too. I think many of us around the world did, because there was as insurgence of people quitting their corporate jobs.
I read this in my sophomore year. A beautiful story. I have a book of his short stories compilations. Highly recommend.
Same here I also read it my 2nd year
I read "The Proposal " by Chekhov in my high school.
I remember reading this story and other good short stories such as this one in junior high brings back memories.
At first I thought the man had died after writing the final letter.
Great narration! I could see the visual when I listen to it
9:01 begins part 2
I was expecting the prisoner to trick the banker and stay the rest of the time! Seems I'm too used to twist endings...
An absolutely brilliant story. Thank you for sharing this. 🙏💕
No ads! Wow 👍👍
I listened this tale in an podcast once. That ending impressed me at the time. ^^

Does not match the original written version.
