      @klaxoncow 7 років тому +78

      Nah, diminishing returns.
      From 480p to 720p - 240 extra vertical pixels - is a big leap in quality that everyone can see. Which is why we were all happy to dump our old CRTs and swap them for HDTVs.
      But 720p to 1080p - which is 360 extra vertical pixels, so it's numerically a larger leap - is less of an obvious leap in image quality.
      From 1080p to 4K - which is a doubling in both directions, so a quadrupling of the number of pixels - is one heck of a technological leap - to add just as many pixels as you already had, in both directions - to be, ah, just slightly better in image quality.
      It's becomes more and more expensive to make less and less of a noticeable visual difference.
      Same thing with frame rate and colour depth. It's diminish returns too.
      We've already hit the limit with colour depth. It's way more precise than the human eye is capable of discerning at 24 bit.
      Truth is, in purely numerical terms, in terms of the number of colours the human eye can discern, 16-bits would actually be enough. It's just that the human eye is more sensitive in some colour ranges than others.
      So going 24 bit was just the "overkill" solution. It's way more than the human eye can see. We're already wasting bits as it is. There's zero point going any higher (at least for visuals to be viewed by the human eye - 48 bit is sometimes used for scientific purposes).
      With a "slideshow" frame rate of 15fps, everyone can see this, because that's not fast enough to pass the "smooth motion" threshold (which is around 20-ish fps). So everyone approves of a 15->30fps leap.
      But, already, with 30fps to 60fps, many an untrained eye genuinely can't see the difference. 60fps to 120fps tests even the trained eye.
      You get the gist. The pattern of diminish returns is that you're having to push way harder - often doubling things each time - in order to make less and less of any noticeable difference.
      4K is already proving a really hard sell to the average consumer. Because, truth is, to the average untrained eye, they can just about tell that it's better. Only just.
      8K is for movies, if anything, as they are shown on massive screens.
      But even that's debatable. Most of Pixar's movies aren't even rendered at 4K, in fact. Doubling the resolution quadruples the needed processing power to render it all.
      And does anyone even notice? Nope. You're probably surprised that they actually render things at such a low resolution for such a massive screen.
      But seeing as you never actually noticed this, Pixar made the right decision - far faster to render and no-one even notices.
      (And, yeah, that's no accident. Pixar, as you might imagine, has done extensive testing. Rendering's really slow, so you want to do the least you can get away with. You'd be surprised - if you look up their numbers online - just how low that actually goes.)

    Someone check this math for me:
    If 3 seconds of 8k video can take up 1gb of storage. Then it only takes 3000 seconds to fill up 1tb of storage (or 50min)
    If a petabyte is 1k terabytes then it would only take 50,000 minutes to fill up the entire database.
    If we generously allow each LTT episode to be roughly 10min long and they upload once a day...
    Then we have to wait roughly 13.7 years before we get to witch hunt linus for not releasing more videos. Pitchforks back in the shed boys :[

      Just did the maths as well: I get ~833 hours of raw footage. How did you figure 2 years: that is only about 1 hour of raw footage per day, plus edited videos to fill a petabyte. That's also assuming no RAID to take space, which is clearly a bad assumption.

    • @scottruesch7783
      @scottruesch7783 7 років тому +2

      Brendan Gifford From what I know, they get rid of the raw footage once they have the final video. Assuming they don't compress their final videos and transfer everything from Whonnock and The Vault to this new server, it should be a maximum of two years. Of course, take it with a grain of salt, as this was just some really quick mental math and I may have made errors along the way.
