If it hops, wiggles, crawls, or gives your mom the chills you'll find it at The Reptile Zoo in Fountain Valley, California
The Reptile Zoo provides the community with a unique educational entertainment facility which houses over 100 exotic species of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids from around the world. These animals each have their own story, some are rescues, many were born at The Reptile Zoo, and others are part of private collections. Here guests can learn about these rare animals first hand with interactive displays and presentations. If they’re brave they can even hold one!
They are sooooooo sweet! We used to have one. He wanted to be held and cuddled all the time.
You were a radiator for it. It harvested your body heat.
@Jason Berryman That's true. I notice there's always some idiot who never interacted with these animals who likes to chime off with an assumption made from watching some general documentary. I've found that to be true in everything from watch collecting to martial arts; people analyzing styles they have no personal experience in based on what they see on TV matches, or, even making UA-cam videos about watches they never even held much less owned.
@@varanid9 well.. reptiles are not empathetic. Literally incapable of nurture and empathy.
Empathy, no, "nurture", yes. Nile monitors defend their nests and crocodilians actually do protect and raise their young.
@@reggie8370 tell that to my Savannah that acts like a puppy. He wants to follow us or be held all the time.
Their primary diet are insects with meat and eggs being an occasional TREAT and that should be a once a month thing IF at all. Dubias, crickets, nightcrawlers are the 3 best foods for them.
Absolutely agree. I myself own a Savannah monitor and I can say with absolute certainty that they are insectivores. Anything besides invertebrate prey should be considered a treat, nothing more. They only get nutritional value from their prey, not necessarily fruits, veggies, etc. We know very little about them and that's why captive bred Savannah monitors are so rare. If fed meat constantly, they can suffer from fatty liver disease and die very young. A very hard pet to take care of which is so unfortunate since they are popular. A great alternative big lizard would be it's cousin, the black throat monitor, which are successful captive breds and survive off of mostly vertebrate prey.
Thank you a lot of wrong information here insects are 100% primary diet and occasional meats and eggs I give meat and eggs sometimes during training as an extra incentive
It's still so funny to me watching mine chase crickets and Dubai's now that he is so big but he still loves them. My nile wont bother with insects any longer though
My Savanah monitor is 5 years, he's long but not chunky like the one here. This guy gets too many rats and meat. They are supposed to be thin and active. They will over eat so it's up to the owner to feed them right. When they walk their belly should be off the ground. Letting them out to roam (supervised) gives them exercise and enrichment. Mine will only sleep on me at night, otherwise he wants down to explore.
I owned a Savannah monitor for many years. He was my favorite pet I have ever owned. And yes, he was very comfortable around us and even knew how to open his cage and walk to the bathroom for his daily bath. Very smart, very effectionate, very good pet.
I ended up switching my monitor for a 47 inch one. Has been plugged in all year and I watch movies from it 😂
Oh really? That's nice to hear! Thanks for being here.
I want to cuddle a monitor lizard. 🥰
Great video, I have a savannah and I love her ! I have held her from a hatchling and she has always been a sweetheart!
I had a savannah and she was better than any dog. She would take naps with me. I'd wake up and she'd still be sleeping on me 😂
My 16 month (rehomed to me 4 months ago) savannah is already this cuddle-able ^_^ they come around very quickly with that trust.
I just finished my monitors cage for my new savannah and he's loving it
How big is it??
Where did u order it from??and do u know where to can order a baby savannah monitor
*I can order a savannah monitor lizard
They're very intelligent animals, I have one got him last year and hes thriving I hope he looks as magnificent as yours
awww my beardy snuggles like that
Now that's a total cuddlebug!!! Yes the lizard I'm talking about! 😅
I just got one. Only a baby. had it for a couple of weeks now. Very cuddly.
My monitor was as cuddly as a cat or dog. I think they love the body heat.
Very sweet darling monitor Lizard I love it
Beautiful.
Yeah first 1st yr mine was a massive biter but after that on yr 4 now I ain't been bit since. Kids play with him fine. He roams freely 10 hrs of the day.
splendid video The Reptile Zoo. I broke the thumbs up on your video. Continue to keep up the terrific work.
Oh, I love those! I've got 3 monitors at home. They're all connected to my computer.
Yes I have some monitors myself! They are great and stay put!
So cute animal❤
I had one about 20 years back, he was as long as my bathtub. I used to feed him live rats, baby chicks, eggs, & raw meat. And he was a cuddle monster. His name was Jaws
So fascinating! I appreciate your thoughtful comments. 💚💚
The savannah monitor is just vibin'
Aww how sweet. 😊
Wow that one is huge!
Yes finally something that can take out some of the snakes in my grandma's house
I have a lace monitor that loves to cuddle
sweet.
Awesome video. Subscribed!!!
Chunky n’ happy
Beautiful animal ❤
Just saw a video of one trying to get into someone's house, probably an abandoned pet
That's a big savannah monitor tho
Cuddly buddy
Dude that is the largest savanna Specimen I’ve ever seen
ugh... maybe I need to get one to break my lizard phobia.
You said meat and eggs . Cooked or raw meat ?
🤣🤣🤣 are you serious?
Please do not feed your savannah monitor mostly meet and eggs bugs like dubia and horned worms are a much healthier diet for them
To put it bluntly it’s cause they will quickly get fat and eventually sick.
Yeah, they can learn a few things, but, you failed to mention that they're more like cats: they do what they damn well please. Also, if the cobra is big enough, it can still pump enough venom into the lizard to kill it.
Yall get that basking spot to about 120, as you should, and ya might notice a difference in behavior
Thank you for noticing. Much appreciated. 💚
Mine didn't grow past 2 feet
That’s a freaking huge lizard!!!!
Think that's big go look up black throat monitors they grow to 6ft 80-90lbs
@@BigTrav310 naw man komodo Is king
@@jonathonparzyck82 yeah but as far as being kept as a pet black throats are the largest alkng side the Nile monitor.
@@BigTrav310 you can own croc monitors they are real tough tho to keep alive in captivity
Fairly small monitor actually
I just bought one. he was born a week ago
Really i just got my asian water monitor 2 months ago too. Its growing and i fed him fish criket and pinkies.
Dios qué grande
Gracias
Rip my savannah monitor:(
You think they can break a human bone from a bite
Mines about 4"1
Love the Sav's! I have a pair a cbb myself. Great video!
Take care and be safe.
I grow it indoors, but I'm having trouble preparing the environment. Is an electric blanket effective?
This reminds of of the news article i saw years ago, about a guy being eaten alive by his 7 nile monitor lizards. He was found leaning against the inside of his house door, with chunks of him missing. Idunno what happened, but it's likely that he didn't feed them a proper diet, which he why they decided to eat him. Since then, that's all i think about when i see or hear about a monitor lizard.
9.4.22
I have one as well.....one thing I've noticed they are stubborn and very robust....the terrible twos (if u wanna call it that) is the difficult time but stay consistent and be just as stubborn as they are....they make AMAZING pets if you have the time patience and space....my Yoshi (videos on channel) is one of my favorite pets and lizards I love my yoshi
I had this one pretty bad haha went for me a couple times as a young one 😂 wear a clean sock for a little bit and hide it in his viv with him helps him associate your smell with safety, worked for me calmed down within a fortnight of me doing that!
Argentine Tegu i would get
6.29.21
Dude...he needs way less meat way more insects.
I feel bad for this lizard. Entirely too big. Probably all that 'meat and eggs' you're feeding it.
I think this guy knows what he's doing
I agree with Andrew. Thier diets consist mainly of insects. Mine has a rodent treat once every 3 weeks. That monitor there is obese and is exactly what makes them that docile...being fat and not being able to move like it should. Savannah monitors are lean reptiles that feed mainly on insects not obese meat eaters like this one the poor thing!
Their diet is mainly insects. Not meat and eggs
This guy has been working with these lizards for his whole life and has a degree to work with these types of animals I think he knows what he’s doing. Calm down Boomer
@@srideout91 they’re telling the truth. These animals are prone to obesity because people feed them too much meat and not enough insects. Usually due to the price of live insects. Ive adopted a severely obese one, because it was fed primarily on meat and scrambled eggs.
I thought yall would know better they are INSEVTIVORES PLEASE DO NOT FEED THEM MEAT AND EGGS A LOT PLEASE
As I understand it, they have horrific bites. Dangerous.
A bite is pretty rare, the tail is probably a bigger concern
Plus when they bite they usually just squeeze, monitors like a nile is usually a worse bite because they have more tendency to shake. Although they do have a good bite force lol. Atleast from what I've seen. I'm sure 47 experts will tell me how I'm wrong though lol.
Sorry man no UV no good good no color wrong technick
I really want to adopt one, but don’t know if I’d have enough time to spend with him because I’m always at work at the zoo :(
They definitely need the attention
This guy doesn't look very active. Most Savannah monitors I've seen hardly slow down. Also, meat and eggs? Do you have a source for that? From what I've found so far, Savannah's are almost exclusively insectivores, with the occasional other treat like eggs, fish, or meat.
Nah monitors don’t do much especially after they eat. With the meat and eggs thing I don’t know what he’s talking about. I hear people like to give their Savannah’s quail eggs and if he means meat as in beef he’s trippin haha. They’re only exclusively insectivores when their young. Mine ONLY ate crickets and then roaches and meal worms and then earth worms till around six months she’s a year now. And she eats slugs, shrimp, chicks, anoles, scorpions. She can eat ribbon snakes as well. Anyone who feeds them micr is lazy and shouldn’t own a savannah in my opinion.
Seth Payne I’ve heard you can feed them lean meats, but idk I just stick to insects daily and an egg maybe once a month or 2
@@thehashslingingslasher69 I stick to a 80%locust, dubia, and hornworms with quail eggs beef and chicken hearts making up the lean meat portion Richard's 2 years 3.5 feet and a healthy weight i know this because he has the lines going horizontally down the sides of his body. Diapause is key to maintaining a healthy savannah monitor
I own 3 and my 4ft male is would sooner sleep rather than be bothered as for my female and my young male they are pretty active. Just depends on the lizards disposition.
@@DBL444 I've actually heard that a Savannah monitors favorite food is snails, I'm not sure why but when I fed mine snails he seemed pretty satisfied with crunching them.
To bad there illegal were I live
Where do you live?
