You need to watch with more attention to detail. Michael looks at Neri, his hit man. What did you think was going to happen? Don’t you remember when Michael said he didn’t want anything to happen to Fredo as long as their mother was alive?
I don't know how anyone can miss that. With Michael Corleone, his deadpan face, although it barely changes, it speaks volumes. And his looks, mannerisms and gaze is more important than his actual dialogue. It's very important to pay attention to all of that.
Neri gets the message from Michael's expression, but seems a bit sorrowful in receiving it. Neri followed orders, but unlike the man he replaced, Luca Brasi, Neri had a bit of a conscience.
As a kid, I saw GONE WITH THE WIND at a HUGE theater, the like of which doesn't exist anymore (late '60s). At Intermission, everyone got up to stretch, go to the restroom, go to the concession stand. They had a small lounging area screened off to each side where you could sit and talk, and still see when the film began again. It was great! Nothing like it today.
Sonny is the nickname of the older brother who died in the previous film. His name is Santino. Tom is also nickname for Thomas, Fredo for Frederico and Connie the daughter is for Costanzia.
Michael doesn't look at you, he looks through you. He scans, he searches for whatever is behind your gaze. It is a necessary trait in his world of treachery, and danger. He's always in danger, cause as Shakespeare wrote, "Uneasy lies the head, that wears the crown." Part 2 is deeper, uglier, mainly because you are watching a man losing his soul. And in the end, all that is left is a man alone literally, mournfully sitting on a bench, with tattered memories. The great critic Pauline Kael gave what is IMHO the most perceptive view of this towering film: Its a moody meditation, on power.
In Godfather 1 when Moe Green went off on Mike, he just sat there and listened to him rant and rave. He did not argue or raise his own voice. Moe, in his anger, confirmed what Mike already believed, that Barzini was the main guy trying to push him out.
The ending flashback scene is brilliant with foreshadowing Michael as an outcast of his own doing and then with his father on the train gesturing the pulling of the strings with little Michael.
What you're missing is that this movie is covering actual history in Cuba. The night in question is when Fidel Castro took over. And the mafia actually did have a deal with the previous Cuban government to run Casinos. But once the Communist took power, those plans went out the window. This is why the mafia turned their attention to Las Vegas.
This is also why some CIA members got together with the mob to try to take Castro out. They both had a common enemy. Obviously, the CIA did not want commies that close to the US and the mob wanted their 'gangster's paradise' back.
The birth order is Santino (Sonny), Frederico (Fredo), Michael and Constanzia (Connie). So, Sonny was intended to succeed his father, and when that didn’t happen, Michael had to step up since Fredo was not considered to be cut out for it.
Fun fact, Frank Pantangeli was originally supposed to be Clemenza, but they couldn’t secure the actor. That’s why he features so heavily in Vito’s backstory.
i have watched both movies dozens of time and I like them both equally. My impression of the first godfather is that Brando amazingly made a mob boss likeable and Michael's journey made you root for him. I also like Sonny's character as well as the Turk. And the ending was unbelievable. For Part 2, Michael becomes completely dark and evil. The acting in 2 specific scenes, 1) Kay telling Michael she had an abortion and 2) Freddo wanting Respect after being Stepped over, were brilliantly acted by Al Pacino, Dianne Keaton and John Cazale. And I loved Hyman Roth's character too. So, they are 2 of the 3 greatest mob movies, the other being Goodfellows.
They couldn’t get the actor for Clemenza to come back so they killed him off between the movies, and replaced him with Frankie They couldn’t get Marlon Brando to come back, so they casted Deniro as Young Vito I believe in both cases, it was money issues. Also, killing Fredo was never “off the table” Mike just didn’t want to hurt his mother. So he waited till mom died, then did it anyway.😂
The guy that chokes out Frankie says, "Michael Corleone says hello." , but he doesn't kill Frankie. Frankie was supposed to THINK that Michael was behind it. It was, in fact Hyman Roth. Vito kills Fanucci, in part, because Fanucci CLAIMED to be a member of The Black Hand, but Vito sees Fanucci get his throat cut. No harm came to the two boys that did it, so Vito realises that Fanucci is a member of nothing. He sees no reason to pay him, so he kills him. Michael never forgave Fredo, but he did forgive Connie, so he 'accepted' Fredo to please her. I'm not sure, but I think that Connie is told that Fredo drowned.
Coppola wanted to get Brando back for the final scene but Brando was upset at the money he got for part one and the studio refused to make up the difference for him to be in it. Personally, I prefer part one
5:23 "you fly around the world with men who don't care for you,.." nods his head in the direction of the man who came with her. 😂 this is an amazing trilogy, the actors, the music, the set pieces! i'm glad you watched it! this is my first time seeing a reaction from your channel, and will subscribe to see more! love the honesty, and humor! Happy New! 🥳
My thoughts on Michael/Fredo at the end, "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer". That's why Michael played along with 'forgiving' Fredo. It caused Fredo to relax and made it easy to kill him. Vito Corleone had no siblings, so he never had to worry about a brother betraying him. Vito's devotion to family was a luxury Michael could never afford. The tragedy of these movies is how all their efforts to protect the family actually doom the family, because it's all founded on crime and corruption. Michael having his own brother killed is the peak of that tragedy.
In part 3 (which isn't too good) Michael as an old man sobs as he confesses to a Priest that he had his own brother killed....Technically, Vito did have a sibling, Paulo, who was killed during the funeral for their father.......first flashback
I think the second part is slightly better than the first one. Both are masterpieces. Pacino should’ve gotten an Oscar for playing Michael. Great reaction! You are hilarious!
That wasn’t the “power of Michael’s look” that ‘convinced Pentangeli’ not to testify against him. Michael arranged to bring Pentangeli’s brother across from Italy. He was sitting beside Michael. This action (bringing him over to ‘support’ Frank) was actually a warning to him that he has his brother… and who knows what might happen to him if Frank testifies. It was intimidation and passive threat.
You are both 100% correct insofar as watching both a second time. You will much more easily understand the subtleties you missed in each and will definitely have a greater appreciation of both film's true greatness. Best two movies ever made.
Share your thoughts (keep them civilized;), subscribe and give the video a 👍🏻! Merry Christmas everyone!! Also, I understand the Mother’s thinking in the opening scene now ☺️
Hope you Lovely Ladies had a merry Christmas! Yep, they used to have intermissions for longer movies back then. I wish they would bring that back for some movies these days. 😆 Fun reaction.
I think Michael had Fredo killed because he saw Fredo as a liability. Michael told him to "never take sides against the family again" in Las Vegas in the first movie, but despite that, Fredo betrayed Michael. The Rosatto (sp?) brothers knew that Fredo was weak, and were able to use him against his brother. It doesn't really matter if Michael reconciled with Fredo at the end personally because he needed to kill Fredo nonetheless so that nobody else could use him against the family.
The Michael Corleone period... that little disturbance when he was in Cuba was the...Cuban Revolution. Look up Cuba & the mob. Great acting by the incomparable Robert De Niro (had to learn Italian-Sicilian dialect) won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Part 2. The first and maybe the only time 2 different actors won Oscars playing the same character.
I believe health ledger and J. Phoenix both won Oscar’s for playing the joker. But I could see that being different as heath ledgers joker while great was completely different than phoenixs joker.
31:47...No,Vito would have not been happy with Mcheal killing Fredo...But it had to be done--He'd never be able to trust him again- It was obviuos he was resentful of Micheal --that makes a sore spot that never heals. He might've tried to take over in the future by teaming up with Micheal's enemies. FYI: Godfather 2 is the ONLY sequel to win the Oscar in movie history.
I enjoyed your video very much. To answer to your questions: a) the kiss Don Michael gaves to Fredo, is the "Kiss of Death" (Sicilian message), b) Fanucci's hand move, is a sign of Power & Authority. Caesar was doing the same move!!!
Concerning Michael's kiss with Fredo, there used to be a saying to go with a kiss like that which has been lost to the passage of time or generations. It was called the kiss of death. Maybe it was just an Italian thing. I do have a tattoo of Vito on my arm after all.
Freydo deserves respect he was passed over. He’s smart and knows how to get things done. He’s no corn chip 🤣 😂🤣 Frey-Doe not Free- Toe 😁 Excellent 👍🏻 reactionary First Watch angels 👼🏻👩🏻🦰👼🏻👩🏻 of light 🫶🏻❤️🫶🏻
One of the best sequels all time like Die Hard 2, Superman II, Terminator 2, Star Trek II, Top Gun Maverick, The Dark Knight, Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future Part II, Back to the Future Part III, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior, LotR The Return of the King, Goldfinger, Thunderball, From Russia with Love, Moonraker, The Spy Who Loved Me, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Rocky II, Rocky IV , Karate Kid Part II, and The Mummy Returns.
just watched your 2 reactions for godfather 1 and 2 back to back. I must say that you pretty much get it . I myself have seen them many times…. so many times that I know the script by heart of most of the dialogues in both movies and read the book twice. I also obviously feel that they both are some of the best films ever made…. love the story …. 5 hoots as well 😊. good job girls. You’re funny.
Francis Ford Coppola had two films nominated for best picture that year: this and "The Conversation". Don't know if that had ever happened before or since. It is still difficult to pick a favorite between parts 1 and 2, but a slight edge to the first simply because of the masterful and memorable set pieces. Great reaction.
Freto had to go for the sake of the family. He was not only too dumb, but Rules are rules. "Passes" are very rarely given in that life, especially when you attempt to kill the boss. If you break the rules your best friend, your brother, your brother in law lol will have to kill you. Without strict rules,an organization like that can not function.
The first one had a great story and an all time great performance by Brando and Pacino was pretty good too. The second one had an even better story with great performances by Pacino and Deniro, and others.
Pacino was PRETTY good?? Michael Corleone's character, and Al Pacino's performances MADE both movies, and I would say are arguably Pacino's greatest performances. PRETTY good. I agree that Brando is the greater actor, as far as natural talent, but Al comes a close second. That's why Coppola fought so hard to keep Pacino as Michael when the studio wanted a tall, blonde, Nordic, non-Italian to play Michael. He knew against the entire industry's push to take over the role and cast who they wanted, that Al was the best & most talented to pull it off brilliantly, and of course he did
Pacino was the greater performance in Godfather 2, but Politics caused the film industry to award what should have gone to Al, to DeNiro. Remove Michael from Part 2 and you have literally nothing.
''THE TEN COMMANDMENTS'' (1956) IS THE GREATEST INTERMISSION MOVIE OF ALL TIME ... Charlton Heston and especially Yul Brenner absolutely kill their performances ,, would be a great watch/review movie for youtube
I don't feel like Vito would have been happy" No, he wouldn't. I've read a theory that the three brothers each inherited or represent one aspect of Vito's personality - Sonny had his passion, Fredo his gentleness, and MIchael had his brains. Vito wouldn't have been as coldblooded as Michael; he always tried to be reasonable first and used violence as a last resort, Michael uses it as the first.
Any movie over 2 hours used to have an intermission because so many people smoked. You could smoke in the lobby but not the main theater for fire codes.
Brando was going to be in the flashback scene but he wanted too much money. Frank Pentangeli was a replacement for Clemenza because Richard Castellano , the actor who played Clemenza in the first film, wanted his lines to be written by his girlfriend, Ardell Sheridan, who played Mrs. Clemenza in the first film. Fun fact : Richard Castellano (Clemenza from the first film) did a tv show called "The Super" with Bruno Kirby Jr. ( young Clemenza in this film) as nis son and Ardell Sheridan playing the mom.
When you guys check out Godfather 3 or "Coda", it would probably be best to see the coda version since it's francis ford coppolla's true vision of the third movie. Althought you should check out what changes that he did. Godfather 3 came out way after the first two, it is a very different movie. The director's cut is said to be an improvement by critics but fans are divisive on some of the changes since there is a new ending to the movie. It would be interesting to see your reaction to the third one because it closes off the trilogy and provides an ending to these characters that we've grown to know especially Michael Corleone. In Coppolla's word, it's supposed to be viewed as a epilogue and not as a part 3 which is why he was dissatisifed with the original decisions back when the movie came out in 1990 and was given the opportunity to recut 30 years later.
Santino is the Oldest, Fredo is the second Oldest and then comes Michael and Connie is the youngest. Santino is the one who got shot in the first movie
When you get to Part III, only watch the version titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. It's presented not as a sequel but as an epilogue, the way Puzo and Coppola intended.
"Godfather III" works better if you look at it less as a direct sequel and more as a later, indirect follow-up. Also, I'd recommend going with the '90s Director's Cut instead of the recent "Coda" recut.
You’re not paying enough attention to the details and that’s why you keep saying that you didn’t see something coming. Michael gave Fredo the kiss of death. Who you called “that guy with Roth” was Johnny Ola, the one Fredo was working with.
Hyman Roth ok'd the hit on Frank. The "Michael Corolone say's hello" line was meant to make Frankie think Mike double crossed him so he would testify at the Senate hearing. Frankies brother was brought in to remind Frankie about honor. The brothers were very close and Frankie respected him and knew he would dishonor his family if his brother heard him turn on his Don.
That explanation does not make sense since he was supposed to be dead. I know it played out that way, but litterly the only way it would kinda make sense is if roth was a god and knew the cop would be just in time to save Frankie. That plan would be better acted if they made it obvious that he was not supposed to die, but nothing in that scene indicated it was planned that he would live.
@@9529jake Yeah, the story of this movie never made sense. Roth had no way to plan all that out. It's the main reason I think this is inferior to the first movie which has a pretty tight plot.
The fall of Michael Corleone is so tragic and intense to watch. To see how Vito started with nothing and died with his family around him, with Michael.. he loses everyone and ends up alone due to his obsessive quest for power and control. Losing sight of the importance of love, community and family. It really is important to recognize that Michael is simply a product of his time. The era of the Italian community looking out for each other that Vito was fortunate to grow up in was long gone. The next generation that Michael is currently in has been corrupted by Corporate America. This point was brought up in Part 1 where Vito sticking to his old school values is what got him attacked in the first place. Its all about making the most money now. Who cares about family values, being men of honor and loyalty. That's the tragedy of Michael's story and exactly why Vito never wanted him in this life. Vito was wise to know that the criminal underworld was changing and his time was up, so he did all he could to keep Michael out as almost the "savior" of the family. The one who would bring them out of that life of crime. Its a tragedy that not only was Michael dragged into the criminal underworld.. but he's left to suffer alone. Forced to become a monster just to survive. In the end, losing everything he held dear, stewing in his paranoia and regret. His lust for control and revenge against anyone that betrayed him cost him everything.
Both part 1 and part 2 are intense. You see the loneliness of the man at the top of a violent empire. Al Pacino is awesome in the coming of age movie Scent of a Woman as well.
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment it’s a very moving and great story I feel it is some of Pacino’s best work. Being a former Army man I like his character being an ex-military mentor to the young character in the movie Chris O’Donnell. Ranks up there to me with When Harry Met Sally seen them both numerous times. They will always be in my physical library!😊
John Cazale, who played Fredo, died at a young age while filming The Deer Hunter. He was engaged to Meryl Streep. Though a very short career he starred in Godfather I, II, The Deer Hunter and Reservoir Dogs. Four of the biggest movies of the decade and arguably all time. His cancer came out of remission during The Deer Hunter. Brando wouldn't come back for the one scene.
Coppola could not come to a contractual agreement with Brando for GF2. Which is why they had to be creative and film a “surprise” party as the flashback scene without Brando. I like GF2 more than GF because you get both a prequel and sequel about how Vito came to power and how it differs from Michael. True, the Corleone Family saga plays out like a Shakespearean tragedy. One Godfather, who was beloved by the neighborhood, family, and feared by his enemies. Another Godfather who was feared by everyone including his own family. Do yourselves a favor and finish out the trilogy with GF3. It’s been unfairly criticized because it cannot measure up to the high bar set by both 1&2. But, now after much time, I think its a fine movie and finishes the Corleone saga. Back in the day, when movies in theaters were long, there was a brief intermission to use the restroom or get refreshments. My mom told me this when she saw it in the theater.
One of the senators in the congressional committee is Roger Corman. He produced a lot of cheap B horror and Science Fiction movies in the 50s and 60s, and gave a lot of young Directors their start. One of His fledgling directors was Francis Ford Coppola who directed the Godfather movies. Another one was Ron Howard.
FOLE, reminder now that you have seen The Godfather Part 2 you can now watch The Freshman(1990) starring Marlon Brando. I believe you will really enjoy the movie, which has as excellent cast, and Brando is truly excellent.
The hit on Michael was by Pantangeli, but it was a double cross set up by Roth. He didn't want to kill Fredo, but he knew he had to. Pacino and DiNiro never did a scene together, until the great Michael Mann movie, Heat! Ironically, his first big feature, was a movie starring James Can( Santino) called, Thief! Michael Mann was ahead of the curve! He also did the first full movie featuring Hannibal Lector called, Manhunter!Directed by Coppola, all his immediate family are actors/directors. Sophia, Nicolas Cage, and Connie...is Rocky Balboa's wife! Coppola also did Apacalypse Now, and The Outsiders, chock packed full of future stars! Also in this series, Sonny's iligitimate son, with the woman he's screwing behind the door, plays a major role in 3! In part 2 the FBI agent is Harry Dean Stanton! He's been in every movie made since the silent era!😅😅😅. Outsiders, Red Dawn, Godfather 2, Dillinger, Green Mile, Alien, and others. RIP to him. The guy Carlo, is still alive and very well connected, and has avoided death, even in foreign countries, because of his Ties. He wrote 1 or 2 books, best sellers, about his businesses, casinos, mob ties, and various stories. He tells it point blank, who and why, killed JFK, RFK, and Monroe. And no one has tried to sue him from the Monroe estate or the Kennedys, because they know every word he said, is true! And they dont want him spilling his guts off, in open court! Type in here, carlo from godfather, tells mob stories! The hit on Sonny, they guy that designed the hit and all the exploding blood speefs, he said, he never put so many creepy ass blood spleefs on anyone ever before! A masterclass of comedy writing, movie was made in the 90s as a semi parody of this movie, well woth watching. Starring Vito, Clemenza from part 2, and Matthew Broderick called, The Freshman. Well worth watching! The movie guy's story is partially true. Frank Sinatra was a huge star in the 30s and 40s but wanted to break into acting, and in good parts but his star was fading. He and his crew started hanging out with huge mob people. They were known as The Rat Pack. Dean, Him, Peter, Sammy, and Joey. Suddenly frank gets parts in 2 of the biggest movies ever....From Here to Eternity and The Manchurian Candidate! Vito was better than Michael, because he was a family man first, before he was a boss. And this is one series, where part 2 is better than 1!!!
33:07 Not having Brando during the closing flashback likely came down to money. For example, he was cut from "Superman II" because he wanted to be paid the same amount as he was given for the 1st film ($1M) . . . even though all of his footage had already been shot. They even had to reshoot a stand-in for his hand because they could not recycle any of his shots from "Superman: The Movie".
No, that's not how it happened. The producers purposely cut Brando out after they fired Richard Donner that way they didn't have to pay Brando for two films.
@@user-michael77 , that is what I said. Salkind and Spengler cut Brando because he wanted to be paid the same amount for "Superman II" as he was for "Superman", even though all of his footage was shot and ADR work was completed. Donner being out of the way doubtless made doing so easier. But however you want to split hairs, Brando was looking for another big payday in exchange for zero new work.
Fantastic reaction to this epic/iconic godfather sequel that is most definitely better than the first one. But in my book the first and second Godfather movies are equally iconic.
The part of Connie's fiancé, Merle Johnson, was played by Troy Donahue, whose given name was Merle Johnson. I think the attempted strangling of Frank Pentangeli (they call him "Five Angels" because Pentangeli means five angels) was a calculated botch. They wanted Frank to live through it and be traumatized, with the words "Michael Corleone says hello" still ringing in his ears. Hyman Roth figured -- correctly -- this would turn Frank against Michael. I think "the look" Frank's brother gave him was to tell him it was shameful and wrong to break the law of omertà (silence). Frank got the message and committed suicide rather than blab. When the prostitute was killed, Michael's number one hitman, Al Neri, was present. He drugged the Senator and murdered the girl. No question. Michael killed Fredo because Fredo had allowed some of Roth's men, who had accompanied Johnny Ola, into the party at the beginning of the 1958 sequence at Lake Tahoe. Roth's men riddled Michael's bedroom with bullets. Fredo had set Michael up for a hit, but was too foolish to understand what he'd done until it happened. (He tells Michael this in the scene that ends with Michael's exiling him.) Michael tells Tom that he believes Roth's hitmen were killed right away "by someone close to us." I believe it was Fredo who killed them. He saw what had happened, realized that it was his fault, and couldn't allow the hitmen to talk.
Brando wasn't in this movie because he wanted too much money for the small scene Vito would be in so his character's birthday celebration was off screen. Fredo was killed because he colluded with Roth in the assassination attempt that he was told was to be a kidnapping. the scenes in Cuba were at the time of the Cuban revolution in 1959 when Castro and the communists took over Cuba.
22:14 Double meaning Tom believes Fredo “dosent know anything” about the plot against the family. But also LITERALLY “doesn’t know anything” because Fredo is slow 🤪
You're correct. This film is considered by many to be superior because of the levels of complexity and tension that it created. Plus, the tragic downfall of Michael's character and the killing of his own brother was rather Greek or Shakespearean. Michael never really forgave Fredo for helping Roth in setting up the hit on him. He just pretended in order to disarm him and Connie and others. And of course, the backstory with Vito, his journey to America, his start in the criminal underworld, and rise to becoming a Boss of a New York Family add such a depth to his character. You get to see it juxtaposed with Michael's journey, and you can see the similarities but definitive contrast. The irony is that in Part 1 Vito stated Sonny would have made a bad Don/Boss due to his quick temper, yet Michael himself loses everything due to his inability to forgive any action and his bloodlust against any "enemy".
I don’t know if it’s just me, but they had Michael looking like a vampire or something in this movie. He looked incredibly pale and almost dead looking lol.
Oh in the book . Sunny did introduce Connor to carlo , but carlo was paid to abuse her to provoke and kill Sunny. , Vito didn't have a good feeling and didn't want her to marry him , and even on the wedding day , he insisted he have nothing to do with the business, and he knew about Sunny and that he had to die , but couldn't kill his daughters husband and the father of his grandchildren, and he let Michael take over and make the decision, knowing what the decision would be , he said whatever happens only happens after Vito dies . And there was a a different ending to the first movie, kay left Michael after carlo Michael didn't lie to her he just wouldn't speak of it . Tom came to her slsnd explained, told her the full truth, and explained why carlo had to die . And Kay accepted it and came back to Michael. Also the moment sonny died , all the trouble in the marriage ended, he became a model husband, and as the in laws , he and kay and Tom's wife were all friends. Or close. She only married into the family a couple of years after Sunny died and only saw the happy marriage. There is more . Most of godfather part two is in the book as well and goes into much greater detail about Vito empire and how he became so powerful. His godchildren . The organised crime gambling, unions, Las Vegas, Hollywood ect . And Michael in sicily. Lots of stuff they didn't have time for in a movie. Really great book reads like a movie.
From what I understand this is obviously a trilogy where one brother dies in each film, Sonny in the first, Fredo the second and in the third, well, it was supposed to be Tom Hagen in the final film but Duvall chose not to appear. So Michael loses his brothers and is left alone, try as he might to escape they kept dragging him back in....by the way Coppola could sum his movies up with one word, The Godfather was 'succession'...
The best thing about this movie is its rewatchability. With so many sub plots intertwining in the present and past, it takes quite a few watches to catch all the moving parts. There's a reason the first two Godfathers are held in the esteem they are. III? Worth watching, but don't go into it expecting this. It's okay, but suffers from inate expectations.
he older guy that was one of Vito's associates, the one that cut his wrists, he did that so his family in Sicily/Italy would be safe. Micheal brought that other man (from Italy/Sicily) to the court because it was a show to him that they have his family, plus in the Mafia world, snitches are the worst kind of guy, especially when it is to the police.
Micheal faked forgiving Fredo. In that scene he looks at Al Neri as Fredo is hugging him. Most people don't catch that the first time
Yea, that was Michael saying, "Okay, Al. Time to tie up loose ends. U know what to do." Man, Michael was RUTHLESS!
You need to watch with more attention to detail. Michael looks at Neri, his hit man. What did you think was going to happen? Don’t you remember when Michael said he didn’t want anything to happen to Fredo as long as their mother was alive?
Could be worse. I saw one reactor who thought Michael was strangling Fredo when he hugged him lol
Also Michael's baptism name is Michele, but since ch in italian has a "k" sound, it's pronounced "mikele"
Michael doesn't look at you, he looks through you.
He scans, he searches for whatever is behind your gaze.
It is a necessary trait in his world of treachery, and danger.
He's always in danger, cause as Shakespeare wrote, "Uneasy lies the head, that wears the crown."
Part 2 is deeper, uglier, mainly because you are watching a man losing his soul.
And in the end, all that is left is a man alone literally, mournfully sitting on a bench, with tattered memories.
The great critic Pauline Kael gave what is IMHO the most perceptive view of this towering film:
Its a moody meditation, on power.
The kind of looks he learned in the army.
That's the Sicilian 'kiss of death' @14:15, so it's no surprise that Fredo was running for his life after that.
The birth order is Santino (Sonny), Frederico (Fredo), Michael and Constanzia (Connie). So, Sonny was intended to succeed his father, and when that didn’t happen, Michael had to step up since Fredo was not considered to be cut out for it.
First two Godfathers were as close to perfect as you could get.
This is one of the best sequels ever made and I am glad you enjoyed ladies!!👍👍
Thanks Jack!
Fun fact, Frank Pantangeli was originally supposed to be Clemenza, but they couldn’t secure the actor. That’s why he features so heavily in Vito’s backstory.
Huh? Frank Pentangeli is a real person and actor?
I watched this reaction like a year ago on my old channel, forgot how QT you two are
Thank you!! 😊
The Godfather 2 is probably the best sequel of all-time. I'm glad you enjoyed it! 6 Hoots for the Godfather 2 🦉
It’s very good!
Maybe not stand alone best, but definitely in the conversation as interchangeable!
i have watched both movies dozens of time and I like them both equally.
Hyman Roth was a great villain to counter Michael. He was just as smart as Michael and cunning.
They couldn’t get the actor for Clemenza to come back so they killed him off between the movies, and replaced him with Frankie
They couldn’t get Marlon Brando to come back, so they casted Deniro as Young Vito
I believe in both cases, it was money issues.
Also, killing Fredo was never “off the table” Mike just didn’t want to hurt his mother. So he waited till mom died, then did it anyway.😂
Godfather 2 is brilliant. The flash back scenes of young Vito are awesome
Directly based on the “second act” of Mario Puzo’s original Godfather novel.
Fredo might find his way home if you give him a couple of days. Fredo was a traitor. Treachery cannot be forgiven.
I always thought Fredo should've changed his name and moved to Oregon or something....but he wasn't smart enough
Happy New! 🥳
Aww thank you!! ☺️🤩
Masterpiece ever.
Isn’t that priest later assasinated?
I think the second part is slightly better than the first one. Both are masterpieces. Pacino should’ve gotten an Oscar for playing Michael. Great reaction! You are hilarious!
Thank you!!
Pacino lost the Oscar that year to Art Carney who starred in a movie about a road trip with a cat!
@@horsedoconfb "Harry and Tonto" is actually a damn good movie about a screwed-up family...But not as good as Godfather II
If you go back to the last shot, Michael is still wearing his wedding band. Took me years to notice that.
I loved that scene at the end......Even though Michael's eyes are dead with regret
They sure picked the right man to play the brother. What a stare he gave his brother.....yikes.
Santino is Sonny , and most don't notice Fredo had the flu as a child , that's why he was a bit slow .
a masterpiece of modern cinema!!! "that's charm" says a charming lady !!!!!😉😊😇🥰
You are both 100% correct insofar as watching both a second time. You will much more easily understand the subtleties you missed in each and will definitely have a greater appreciation of both film's true greatness. Best two movies ever made.
That is the word I use for this movie…subtle.
Natalie and Michelle, I hope your Christmas was the best because you ladies deserve it. Mine unfortunately was terrible.
We are sorry to hear that Oliver. We hope you are okay?
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment You beauties made it better.
I enjoyed your video very much. To answer to your questions: a) the kiss Don Michael gaves to Fredo, is the "Kiss of Death" (Sicilian message), b) Fanucci's hand move, is a sign of Power & Authority. Caesar was doing the same move!!!
Coppola begged Brando to do the scene but Brando had issues with the studio for not paying his quota. It would have been cool
The deal with Brando was they didn't want to pay him millions for a 30 second cameo
.....At any rate, the focus of that scene was Michael, isolated. Didn't need to see Vito
Concerning Michael's kiss with Fredo, there used to be a saying to go with a kiss like that which has been lost to the passage of time or generations. It was called the kiss of death. Maybe it was just an Italian thing. I do have a tattoo of Vito on my arm after all.
In order of birth it’s: Sonny, Fredo, Michael, then lastly Connie
Freydo deserves respect he was passed over. He’s smart and knows how to get things done. He’s no corn chip 🤣 😂🤣 Frey-Doe not Free- Toe 😁

Between Fredo and Kate...Michael had to make the right choices to keep his family safe, even though no one will be happy about it. Especially him...
Thank you Gary!!
Godfather 2 is a wonderful bookend to the original, which is oparetic. They're both tremendous. Thanks for posting.
Love the reactions, Frado sleeping with the fishes, don’t feel sorry for a man that betrayed his father for his own gains 😊👍✌️🇺🇸
I don't feel like Vito would have been happy"
No, he wouldn't.
Michael gives Fredo the bacio della morte. The kiss of death. The recipient knows his days are numbered.
Fun review. Thank you both!
☺️😍🤗
Santino is the Oldest, Fredo is the second Oldest and then comes Michael and Connie is the youngest. Santino is the one who got shot in the first movie
Frito.
@@justmeeagainn Frodo
That line was an ad-lib by Danny Aiello that Coppola ended up keeping in the movie
@@9529jake Correct....They WERE killing him, but got interrupted, by chance
12:34 it wasn't Michael, It was Tom who did this, He was the Don here while Michael was away
Pacino’s greatest internationally known performance is Tony Montana in “Scarface”.
I’m trying to get Michelle to watch that for a first watch, she has never seen it 🎉
Both part 1 and part 2 are intense. You see the loneliness of the man at the top of a violent empire. Al Pacino is awesome in the coming of age movie Scent of a Woman as well.
Someone else mentioned that movie recently:)
Cazale wasn't in Reservoir Dogs; he was long dead. He was in Dog Day Afternoon, with Pacino
Yes
Personally, I love to laugh. U 2 are so funny. You girls keep doing what you're doing. I'm lovin it 👍👌
Also, to Natalie: 😍😘💋❤️🤗🌹
Fyi, Santino WAS the eldest son. He was just more commonly known by his nickname, Sonny.
I always thought it was better that he didn’t. It gave his character that mystique, that legendary status and you don’t see him
@@jamesdunne3626 ...Besides, the real focus of that flashback at the end is Michael, isolated
Fantastic reaction to this epic/iconic godfather sequel that is most definitely better than the first one. But in my book the first and second Godfather movies are equally iconic.
Thank you!!
Yeah Santino is Sonny’s real name.
He saw what had happened, realized that it was his fault, and couldn't allow the hitmen to talk.
i think we can all agree kay got off easy with that slap michael gave her.
Well where I believe her decision was evil, I do understand wanting to get away from Michael who was a calculated monster.
I laugh right along with you because I get a kick out of your reactions
Fun Fact: Connie is also Adrienne in the Rocky movies.
REALLY??!!
My boi Michael was sittin in the sunset like Thanos lol It is done, can I rest?
4:56
In the deleted scenes you can see that Ciccio's men went to her house to get her there.
That's called the kiss of death... Its what Mob Bosses gives to his associates who betray them.. its a mark to be murdered.
Brando wasn't in this movie because he wanted too much money for the small scene Vito would be in so his character's birthday celebration was off screen. Fredo was killed because he colluded with Roth in the assassination attempt that he was told was to be a kidnapping. the scenes in Cuba were at the time of the Cuban revolution in 1959 when Castro and the communists took over Cuba.
i just watched this tonight 💜 my favorite movie and i love seeing other people’s interpretations of it

Double meaning
Tom believes Fredo “dosent know anything” about the plot against the family.
But also LITERALLY “doesn’t know anything” because Fredo is slow 🤪
😂😂
I could watch Natalie watching paint dry and be entertained 🥰
That’s a good point .
I don’t know if it’s just me, but they had Michael looking like a vampire or something in this movie. He looked incredibly pale and almost dead looking lol.
He is scary one way or another 😂
The Legendary "Kiss Of Death!"
Can't wait for part 3

Vito's kids - Santino (Sonny), Fredo, Michael, and the daughter Connie
Sonny is Santino's nickname & he's the oldest. Then Fredo then Michael.
he older guy that was one of Vito's associates, the one that cut his wrists, he did that so his family in Sicily/Italy would be safe. Micheal brought that other man (from Italy/Sicily) to the court because it was a show to him that they have his family, plus in the Mafia world, snitches are the worst kind of guy, especially when it is to the police.
I think you’ll like Once upon a time in America better. Robert De Niro is in it.
