The best Overland Vehicle is the one you have. Overlanding is about exploration not vehicles, if you want to get started in Overland use what have to get your feet wet and then as you can afford make upgrades as you figure out through experience what your wants and needs are. In this video we walk around my old Ford F250 Super Duty, that was not bought for the purpose of Overlanding.

Love the way you put it, you don’t need to spend 70,000 on a overland rig. I use a 99 k1500 Silverado that I have basically rebuilt now with everything new. I only have 10 grand in it and that includes a fiberglass topper. Sometimes I sleep in the back of the truck or if the weather is good I use a hammock. As always thank you for doing what you do. Always a pleasure to watch

A 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins 4WD extended cab. I took my farm truck with a flat bed and built an aluminum frame and integrated some storage boxes. Put a CVT tent on top. My camp gear lives in the truck so its been fun heading out with minimal prep.
Thank you. Sadly some within the overland community still want to be adamantly divisive over vehicles and which is better. Meanwhile, some people will get discouraged all together because of this. Just get out there and get out of those cubicles or whatever else keeps us disconnected with the outdoors!

Lots of the Toyota and Jeep guys think if its not their type of vehicle, then it can't happen and its simply isn't true.
Jeeps require a LOT of maintenance. Toyota Tacomas are incredibly lacking in terms of comfort and space. I’ve spent a lot of time in a 2016 Sahara and a 2018 TRD PRO (coworkers cars that we’d swap between daily). I personally drive a 2000 F150 4x4 with a camper shell and love her to death. It gets roughly the same fuel economy as the aforementioned vehicles, but is unshaded by having a heavy payload and has unlimited amounts of space both in the interior and in the 6.5’ bed

I really appreciate your humble, honest, practical presentation. You're absolutely correct in your statements about getting out and exploring in what you've got and can afford. It shouldn't be a rich man's hobby. Public lands are out there for everyone to enjoy, and doing so on a budget is truly possible for those who have the desire. Folks who have the money to burn and want to spend huge piles of cash on a vehicle and accessories should feel free to do so also, as it stimulates the economy and brings smiles to their faces...................but it's not necessary to enjoy the outdoors.

Run what you have! I Overland in a 1980 Toyota Pickup. I got a laugh from you saying the v8 was under powered, my almost 40 year old truck with the stock 20r 4 cylinder engine had 98 horsepower from the factory! Keep making the great videos!
You hit the nail on the head👍. The best way to build a rig up is to not copy what others have, but just go out and experience the trails and see what you need over a period of time. 🍻

Thanks for this perspective. Just read an article through “Outside” magazine about a guy who bought a $90k Land Cruiser and was planning another $20k+ in modifications. So many overland channels have effectively become “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”. Glad you’re keeping it real.

That is the same impression i'm getting, a small & old European RV is really expensive, modifying an already expensive 4x4 is even more so.
Unfortunately we don't get these big pick-up trucks in Europe, the F150 for instance is bigger than essentially all European variants.
I drove a diesel Suburban for 21 years with no mods and no 4wd. It took my family everywhere you can imagine. Now I have a Ram 1500 crew cab short bed 4x4 with no mods either.

I started over landing years ago in my 1974 Chevy Nova, later when I had a family we went in my Dodge Omni. I've moved up from there thank goodness. It just shows that you just use what you can and don't focus on having the best and newest stuff. Enjoy with what you got

I love that you use a truck and use it successfully. Proves you dont need to buy a special vehicle to enjoy the outdoors, a vehicle is only as capable as its driver, and your extremely capable. I've always had full size 4x4 trucks and I've never not been able to go where I want in them. trucks are my first love, but I agree that 5.4 is severely lacking.

So glad you talked tires. I am always shocked at the people who go for an aggressive "looking" vehicle and omit proper tires which are the single most important item for me on my truck. People have been nagging me about lifting my Ram 2500 but I have never seen the point.Why mess with the geometry of your truck and spend money when sensible driving(and tires) will get you to most of the places you want to go? It always makes me chuckle that all the vehicles I have helped pull out have been lifted or modified in some way. I am not saying lifts aren't useful rather they are not necessary or worth it for me. I liked the talking points.Cheers.
I've got a 1993 F350 7.5L v8 460. Best vehicle i've ever owned. I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere.

I love your approach to your build, only adding mods as the need becomes apparent, affordable DIY solutions, and a focus on improvements that actually make a real difference in your day to day life.
IT DEFINATELLY matters what vehicle you have . You are not gonna take 2 door honda civic or brand new 80k shiny lexus suv overlanding and beat the hell out of it . STOP giving people dymb advices ! If it doesnt matter what type of vehicle one has then why do you have older lifted Nissan Frontier with upgraded suspension , 33 in tires and a winch with plenty of gear ???
You have an awesome definition of an overlanding vehicle - use what you have! Just get out there and explore! I had to change my vehicle and will be building out a '19 RAM 4WD truck over the next couple years.
Love the fact that you are just using what you have to get out and unplug! With so many "Overlanders" now, it is all about what you drive and how much you spent on your equipment. Anybody with a desire to get outside and explore, i appreciate. Thanks for videos like this!
Locking diffs and low gears are about the only mods I would consider. Love your channel. Please keep the content as you feel best, Everything evolves.
As I progress into my 70's, I gave up backpacking (still do short 5 to 10 mile trips) and have gotten into overland camping and exploring with a 2016 Jeep Compass. I've done some mods but nothing beyond tires and lights; also added some electronics. It's a great inexpensive entry into overland adventures and after a half dozen trips I'm hooked. I normally hammock camp but I did purchase a very comfortable tent cot. Along with it an Aqua Quest 10X10 Safari tarp serves as an awning. Hopefully I'll be camping in some snow in the Monongahela Wilderness of West Virginia in January. I've been an outdoor enthusiast since age 10 and while serving 23 years in the military I wandered and explored on five continents. It' a part of my DNA. I love watching your videos to acquire some ideas and compile a bucket list of destinations. I love to cook and doing it outdoors makes the food so much more palatable.
I like what you said, and the points: that the best vehicle may be what you already own,...get out there first and you'lL figure out what you need. Just be safe and don't put yourself in situations you can't get out of. USE COMMON SENSE.

Hell yeah an awesome truck! I currently have a 4wd 2005 Chevy Silverado crew cab with a leveling kit and I love it. It gets the job done like yours does. All I have is a Roof top tent on a bed rack and my cooler. Your comments well said 100% RIGHT 👍👍👍👍👍
Good video, well-spoken, definitely appreciate the knowledge. I'm in a similar living situation. I have a 2004 Ford Excursion V10 same generation, same color. I feel the same about lift and mud tires. I'm using a 20 inch factory trims from a 2015 with 32 inch tires but the same 275 65, minimal rub because of the backspacing wheel spacers are in the list. My next project though is to do a dual battery and I do have some solar I'll be putting on the top as well.. Then hot water probably plastic Home Depot DIY. And finally a center console refrigerator system! Thanks again for your videos and knowledge.

Great video as always! I have to say I agree with you 100% about the vehicle. I drove a 1994 2500 Chevy Suburban 2wd with the 6.5 Turbo Diesel for 21 years and I took it everywhere you can imagine lol
No 4wd and normal all terrain tires. No lift or anything else. Best thing about it was 16 years without a car payment lol. I finally sold it to a friend who has a large family and since my time of hauling kids and their friends everywhere was done I wanted it to go to someone who will take care of it. It’s now at almost a half million miles and going strong. The only things that have been replaced are the batteries, not bad for 26 years on and off the road lol
Now I have a Ram 1500 4x4 crew cab short bed truck (5.7litre Hemi) with a camper shell. The original tires were street tires on 20” rims. I changed those to 17” rims with 285 R17/70’s on Black Rhino rims all of which I purchased at Les Schwab same as you lol. I also decided to skip the mud terrains and go with an aggressive all terrain. Mine cost $1200 as opposed to the muds at $1600 so I saved $400 enough to get some other goodies lol. I don’t have a lift either and I’ve never regretted it. This truck does everything I ask of it and then some
Just start with what you have and get out there. Then over time make a list of what experience is telling you to get. By doing it that way you won’t over spend on some giant contraption filled with expensive stuff you don’t actually need. If you aren’t traversing the Amazon jungle
there’s a tonne of nonsense you don’t need lol.
I have more respect for the person who gets outdoors with just the stuff they grabbed from their kitchen and linen closet than the person who stays at home building a $100,000 monstrosity over the course of five years before going camping even once.
Think about it. That’s 5 years of experience you’ll have before they even go once. Plus they’ll end up using maybe 10% of all that fancy gear. Also, some of your best memories will be the times you had to overcome something with what little gear you had at the time. I used to listen to the stories my son and his friends would share when hanging out at my house. Not one of them talked about Disneyland which they had all been to lol. Nope it was always something about the time the car was stuck in the mud or getting a flat tire and the jack didn’t work or the cool rock or stick they found and the first fish they caught with just a string and a stick.
So yeah just get out there and enjoy it. Who knows maybe you’ll run into one of us that have been doing it for years and years, you’re welcome around my campfire even if you drive a VW Golf lol

I really think you’ve got one if the best engines and year Ford made. I know of a E250 van, 5.4 Triton, one million miles, only normal maintenance. I had a 2002 F150, 5.4, excellent engine.
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 4x4 right here!! I’d tell people to just maintain what they have and make sure the starting parts, battery, alternator, starter is in good shape and the cooling system a tune up and your good.
I'm using my "old 96er" a 1996 Ford F250 Powerstroke, It works very well for overlanding/Boondocking.
In my and my wifes opinion you are overlanding love your heart keep exploring 🍻🐶🐶👍

I never have time to get out and go camping but I definitely will someday but I’m learning a lot from you on your videos and please keep them coming. They are also very therapeutic for me since getting out of the military and been on several deployment overseas. The videos really help me cope with my issues.

Roaming around in a 01 Silverado that I’ve had for almost 15 years now. It hauls all my gear under a tonneau cover and doesn’t draw any attention but as my family is growing I will need to get something else to comfortably keep us out and exploring.
I overland with my 2018 F150 2.3L EcoBoost. It has great fuel economy (21 mpg) and power (twin turbo). The STX version also comes with rear locking differentials and trailer assist. Got a 23Zero tent mounted on a set of KB Voodoo Hi-Rise Crossbars. Top of the tent is flush with the roof of my cab and I have not noticed any fuel penalty.

I saw a video with some people driving a new Toyota Tacoma, they spend tens of thousands of dollars outfitting it, acting like every thing they were adding was extremely necessary for their survival. They were heading to Tuktoyaktuk, NT in Canada and in a rest area they were talking with a couple heading the same way driving a VW minivan only equipped with tire chains! That's when you think like you said, "The best overland vehicle is the one you have", just go out and travel. Great video!

Great video as always! I’m running a 2012 Nissan Frontier SV 4x4 with a 2 inch lift and toyo open country tires. I use a Rightline gear truck tent for shelter while out on the trails.
Great ideas, I’m just getting started to build my over landing gear, I’m thankful for those such as yourself that’s paving the road for my adventures, great seeing the dogs on your videos as well. Keep the dream alive!
Where I grew up we called it camping, and if you had horses you already had the best "overlanding" transport ever.
Especially for going back country exploring, camping, fishing or hunting.
Great video and wonderfully put - truth is truth! It is not about spending the most money - but about using what you have and adding to it after you figure out you need it. We love our old Ford E99 F250 7.3.
You have an excellent setup. I've been camping with my truck for many years and also have my auxiliary batteries and solar panel, however, once I drained both: the auxiliary batteries and truck's because the solenoid got stuck in a close circuit. Due to bad weather the solar panel didn't help and had a hard time. I regretted not having a generator. After that experience I bought a small/cheap 2000 W generator and feel much better. Thanks for sharing your videos, I enjoy them a lot.

I wish that we had the overland opportunities down here in Southern Appalachia that you guys have out West. Here, you can’t throw a rock without hitting the next paved road. And I live in a very rural part of Alabama. However, we still just do not have these types of opportunities. I would love to take a road trip out there and spend a week overloading with our teardrop, but it would take us a week to get there, a week to camp, then a week to travel back home. We live in beautiful country with many great outdoor opportunities…overlanding just isn’t one of them.

I have a 2018 Tacoma with front and rear lockers, 35's, bumpers, prinsu with solar, RTT etc. Before that I had an 08 and before that I had an 01. I started off with something with just as basic as a truck, lift, tires and camping gear. Now that I have the means to build a truck how I like, it's gone to the extreme.
I have done Holcomb trail, Moab, Rubicon etc. And it's my daily driver. I got it new with 9 miles and in almost 2 years it has a little over 60k. Build and drive what you like. Just get outside and enjoy it!

Yep, You are correct if you want to get out there..... You will find a way with what you have. I have a 1999 Corolla which I have been two many places that allow with the clearance where I saved thousands in gas savings. Grand Canyon to the rockies, smokies to joyce Kilmer forest. However, I have a 2016 RAM 1500 as well now and always wanting all these toys... Lol. go figure.
I love my 05 f250 5.4l i love it so much that im saving up for a 6.0l powerstroke crate engine (different from a stock 6.0l before anyone comments) thats gonna keep this baby going for a long long time
I also have an F-250 super duty with short bed,7.3. I hand built a small, low profile , overland camper style/ tool storage over the years. It's a work in progress

Well that’s exactly what I did this year I can’t quiet overland on some of those dirt roads but I took a real nice road trip to Cherry Springs Natl Park in a Honda Civic hatchback 2019 so going back but added the whole 7 wonders of Pa to it! Got that explorer bug and I love it. You do such a great job and I learn a lot from you. Thanks a Mill⛺️

I have wondered though, why full-size rigs are not more often used for overland. By the time you lift a Toyota, bigger wheels and tires, all that stuff bolted on and it gets 12 miles to the gallon with a tiny gas tank and is totally under powered. Then you gotta dump $3500 in new gears.
Back when I was a kid I thought it was called camping and exploring with what ever you had. I didn't know that we were Overlanding. We were way ahead of our time 😂
My first overland vehicle was a 1996 GMC regular cab 2500 4x4 I bought used. It was set up for hunting, gooseneck stock trailer pulling, utility trailer pulling and date night. My girlfriend at the time loved to go camping and we used a wall tent. I can afford more than that now, but to be honest I miss the simple camps we had! Don’t little a simple camp keep you from enjoying yourself!
The truck is one of the reasons I was attracted to this channel. I really appreciate the old trucks. I also love how everything is functional and for a purpose, not for looks and show. Sweet Rig!

Nice rig! I don't believe in having all the bells and whistles on a vehicle. Only the necessary ones. I have 10ply Hercules on my pickup. Just all terrain tire. Jacked up in our mountains means tippy. I haven't lived out of my pickup in a couple years now. I still have the same pickup though. 88 Chevy 4×4. With a 350. It gets around in the mountains very good. Love the live style of over landing but I have a couple health issues now. I spent over a year living in the truck with a small trailer. Looks like you have everything you need to me. I'm sure you are enjoying it! Thank you for sharing! 😊
This is such a great video. You nailed with the use what you have advice. I hope any would-be overlander pays attention to that advice. My truck is a 2013 F150 4 door and a 6 1/2 ft bed. It is a long truck. I shopped for the 4wd with the factory electric locker in the rear axle. My truck has a 36 gallon fuel tank. I added a camper shell that I got for $75. I installed an 800 watt inverter on the passenger side b pillar so I can run devices up to 60 amps. I have a400 watt on the driver side. I added two receiver hitches on the front replacing the tow hooks so I can mount a winch when needed.
We have 2 Subaru Foresters, the 2018 is the wife's and stays pretty much on pavement, my 2006 is lifted and set up for overlanding. Simple and free does not mean in debt and payments that end up making you work more and being free less. and for thos of you laughing at a Subaru for overland rig, need to watch softroadingthewest here on youtube. I run an 04 Tacoma double cab 4x4 TRD, that started as a fairly normal truck, pulling my homemade Teardrop trailer.
Both have evolved over time, the Tacoma now has an ARB, and Warn winch, a small lift, and a homemade flatbed with air, and water systems built in, as well as lockable storage for my recovery gear.
The Teardrop has received a heavier axle, and now has brakes, and a wheel and tire setup to match the Tacoma.
This has like I said evolved over the last twelve years, and I still don't call it done, there is always something to be tweaked, and improved.
I completely understand, sometimes you just need to roll with what you got, if it works for you, just keep going with it...
I love not having vehicle payments, I invested in bullet proofing the engine in my 2004 pickup, to last me another 150k+ miles, I use it for exploring, truck camping and for towing a travel trailer
For about 4 years, I went out in a Jeep Cherokee. Little by little, I’ve added a Dometic fridge, vehicle setup for my dog, a small solar setup with a Jackery 500 and a Gazelle tent. I’ve since moved on to one of the new Ford Rangers, and figuring out the setup for it.
So true!! It is refreshing to see a lone wolf that doesn't jump on the bandwagon for trendy Tacoma's 4Runners or the like! But I might have a biased opinion because I as well on an F350 and love to have all the torque and Power in the world

I have a 2014 Nissan titan and have no intentions at all in buying a new vehicle because you’re 100% right it doesn’t matter what vehicle you’re driving the fun is in your desire to go camping or should I say overlanding.

Right now I am using my 2010 Nissan Titan, the down side is it is two wheel drive. But I am using what I got.
If you read the comment I posted you will see that I drive a 2wd Suburban for 21 years and never had a problem. Use what you have and just get out there

A good set of tires can ve like pho-4x4 is some situations, you can always either trade up or if you love the truck enough you can just front end swap it for a 4x4 its costly but depends how you love the truck
Your truck already had manual locking hubs you didnt change anything. The obs trucks came with either auto or manual locking hubs with manual or electric transfer case. All 1999/super duty f250s 350s 450s 550s come with manual locking hubs that also auto lock the rubber vacuum line goes bad and causes them to stop auto locking but you can always manually lock them even if the auto locking hubs still work. even the brand new ones come with manual locking hubs. Otherwise nice truck and setup only thing I’d change is it being a 7.3l instead of the 5.4 lol

Nice video Jason! Lots of good info here. You've done a fantastic job of customizing the truck to make it work for you and your lifestyle.
Great points , a friend of mine had a two wheel drive Silverado but knew it well. He often beat the 4x4’s on Jeep tracks, not due to the truck but his understanding of its limitations. He had no more than 100 lbs in the bed which he shifted as need. Tires those were changed more often to handle off-road. I’m not a long time viewer of this channel but you could do everything I have Sean 2wd. Drive what you have just know it’s limits. Then just prepare for the worse.
We run a 17 4Runner and also have an 08 Honda Fit, and a Ford ranger but that truck is basically decommissioned so it’s no longer being used for much. Usually we take the car on less aggressive trips that have higher miles and the 4Runner is used for trips where we will encounter either bad weather or difficult trails but both vehicles are stock as far as suspension and stuff. Definitely have been inspired by your channel to get out there with whatever we’ve got and just have fun!
I love the pick up truck concept and now wish I had kept my 2005 Ford Sport Trac which had the hard cover tonneau and the swing out cage allowing me to drop the tailgate, giving me an added 2 1/2 feet of load space. My present vehicle is a 2016 Jeep Compass and yes it's small but I can sleep in the back with the rear seats folded flat and the driver's seat pushed far forward. I bought a base camp Teton mat for cushioning or during nice weather I'll set up a 4-man Coleman tent or a tent cot. For an awning I use an Aqua Quest 10X10 draped over the hatch and kept upright with telescoping Green Elephant tent poles. Much of the larger gear is stored in a rooftop cargo basket when traveling. You're right in that you don't need a $50K vehicle with 10 to 15K of parts...I camped with my 2014 VW bug in the Appalachians using the car cover as a shelter over a $17 hammock. I totally appreciate your approach. Your setup reminds me of the woodman's trucks growing up in the Willamette valley. Everything was there to be functional, not for show. Many of those guys would often stay up in the woods if the timber demand was high, so they were on somewhat of a overlanding experience for their work.
Well we love your common sense no nonsense attitude! We don’t have a big budget so are using an old 2010 Ford Escape at the moment( but still missing my old Ranger). Hopefully get back to a 4x4 truck again in the future. I always found that half the fun is modifying your equipment yourself to suit your needs. From trucks to trailers to canoes and kayaks. One of the things we love about your channel. Give Daisy and Wheeler a scratch behind the ears from us! 😊🐕🐕

Mate a small roof rack would be awesome for you. You could mount an awning and/or lights to it.
