The family dynamics are complicated, they have always been and will always be There is love, rivalry, but there is some invisible cord that ties them together. The word translated in English as "nation" can not just mean "nation" as taught today but can mean "peoples" which makes more sense Abraham would become the father of many people not many nations. Not too mention as part of the curse for disobeying YHWH they not only will be hated by gentiles but will also be persecuted by them.
