I would have stopped in defeat at the ugly stage. You persisted through it. Your final piece is stunning. I love the depth and the color and the blocky texture.

Ty for this video. As a beginner, it’s nice to see you work in layers. Also, I like that you have created your own style.

I would have never thought to use those colors combinations and in that order. Thank you for a class act demonstration.

Anyone else noticing the palette is perfectly organized by tone? Each row seems to have complimenting tones. The third row is a cooler version of the first row , with the middle row having its own vibe. I imagine this palette makes it easier to stick with the correct feeling for your painting ! I’ve made separate warm tone and cool tone palettes but never thought to have a little range of each

This was a great tutorial for me! I'm just starting to paint again after about 35 years. I used acrylic years back and only dabbled with watercolor. You taught me that layering is important. This piece is amazing.....Thank you so much!! ❤🇨🇦

I have never used a flat brush with angles in a portrait. I will try this.

Thank you - I've watched this a couple times. It helps for me to trip on problems and go back to see how you solve those. This time I noticed how you left large highlights initially, Then you used progressively lighter values to get a nice sculptural gradation between highlights and darker values. Beautiful work.

Just wanted to say this tutorial was so refreshing. I have trouble painting “loosely” and keeping my highlights. And every other tutorial I’d seen so far starts with the light colors as a rule. I loved it, thank you

One thing that makes watercolours intimidating for beginners is "messing up" on 100% cotton paper can be relatively costly 😂 (but realistically you really have to sacrifice some to progress) I learnt so much from your layering demonstration (those flat brushes and the rigger brush came in clutch)! Thank you for showing a way through the initial nebulous stage, and for validating that you need to push through it 🥲 I see a lot of realistic painting tutorials, but my first time coming across a more stylised portrait style-love it!

This was hugely helpful, thank you so much. I’ve been doing portraits in pencils and alcohol markers for ages but that experience only translates over to watercolor a little bit. There is still so much different between doing portraits in pencils and in watercolor. I loved watching this and how you work in layers and learning more about how to choose the colors for your base layer. Seeing the colors come together is so satisfying and seeing the facial features come through is such a beautiful experience.
I have A LOT left to learn, clearly. So I’m always grateful for helpful artists sharing their knowledge and experience.

Great tips I learned from this:
Sketch on copy paper then use charcoal/pencil to trace the sketch onto the watercolour paper
Blue wash where the shadows and darkest areas are
Keep the highlights bare paper as much as possible
Have two jars of water, one to clean the brush one have a supply of fresh water
    Cheers

Love your style, will be checking out your gauche video next, thanks for sharing 👏👏👏
BTW I transferred sketches by rubbing pencil on the back for years but was recently given an old box of “graphite transfer film” that you put between your sketch and the watercolour paper, I thought it might be messy like cheap carbon copy paper, but this stuff is different. It doesn’t rub off onto your hands or the paper accidentally but transfers a really clean line without too much pressure. You should try it out if you get the chance, You’ll be amazed at how much time and pencil you save 😂

This is a wonderful finished product but WHY did the artist make the choices he made. It's difficult for me to see this as a a genuinely helpful tutorial without knowing WHY he chose to begin with blue instead of an umber or purple underpainting. This is a magnificent speed paint, but not a real tutorial. I'm just so dissapointed because all I want is to learn to paint darker skintones in watercolor. It's really frustrating to struggle with painting people my shade & darker. Maybe I just expect much after watching & reading Kelly Eddington's tutorial/ book. Does this artist have an accompanying book? Maybe that's where things are clearly explained.
