thanks very much for watching, don't forget to subscribe, and give the video a thumbs up if you enjoyed!!
Does anyone watch Jack and just admire his memory? Because no way would I be able to tell you about the last 10 books I read 😂 even with how good they were, I will have forgotten within two days every detail. Bravo Jack! Another great vid! X
Yeah i think i might have a memory problem fr 🏃🏻♂️🕳
Omg same!
true, but I'm sure he also preps up before a video..i mean I really don't think he just randomly starts talking to a camera without any pre-thought
I read Harry Potter 5 times and watched the movie and I still cant remember anything about it
You need to start reading comprehensively then, not just mindlessly
I love how you recommend books that are not just the same basic books every book tuber recommends.
It's the main reason I subscribed to him too. He's got range
omg yes. every other single video and tiktok are about the same set of books over and over
It's funny, with all the books out there, people keep reading the same ones.

Ugh i need a great book to get out of a rutting reading slumo
@@inooooooooooo haven't read Harry Potter yet have you ? That's the greatest book I've ever fome across
Can I just say, I adore that even when you don’t like a book you still seem to respect it. I get recommendations of videos like “I read 5 popular books and they destroyed my will to live!” I love that even when something is for you, your respect for the writer and the craft shines through and that is why you are the best. 💜
Congrats on 1 million! Also, i am actually afraid to watch this because I just know I will add more books to my TBR as per your recommendations, and it is already a huge pile 😩 nevertheless, I love your reccs!

@@user-qu8zs7vs1x Oh you’re right. Thanks!
Cul de sag 😂👌
The best book I recently read is “Das Parfüm” by Patrick Süßkind. It follows the most disgusting and atrocious protagonist through France pre Revolution. It’s about a murderer who murders girls to get to their smell and create a perfume for himself. I really loved the writing style and the way smell became something so much focused on in the story and in the writing. It’s a really popular German book which got a movie adaptation with Alan Rickman in it.
I wish I didnt had to read that in middle school now I would probably like it.
Deutsch Grundkurs?
The Story of a Murderer has been on my list. It’s part of Penguin Classics.
@@ninamarie177 Hatte ehrlich gesagt nur Lust es zu lesen😅
@@jaxsmolenbee4683 ach so :) wir mussten es damals im GK lesen. Das Buch ist aber wirklich gut.
what a fabulous way to wake up & drink my ☕️
btw: you really are the harry styles of the book world
the casual product placement in the background 😌👌 (they’re great planners, do recommend)
love a sublime message!
The best book I've read recently was "The Miracles of the Namiya General Store" by Keigo Higashino. Basically there are these three delinquents that hide in an abandoned store where the shopkeeper used to offer people advice on any matter through letter exchange, when suddenly the boys receive a letter by someone who is in need of advice and they decide to reply. There are five different stories but they're all connected in some way which I loved! Also has some nice plottwists :3
Currently reading this book after a favourite musician of mine recommended it. It's got such a unique premise and is so utterly captivating!!
Oh yesss! I read that book when I needed it! The second story of that aspiring musician touched me so much and was so relatable that book has a special place in my heart 💚
Sorry for my English ;)
been having a hard time reading ever since I was a kid because I have the worst attention span but im slowly getting into reading more this year thanks to your channel!!
I had a similar problem and found that it gets easier the more consistently I read. Hope you find some great books you enjoy! 😊
@@thaleiagreek3566 yes! I usually have a reading list so i know how to pace myself and i usually forget to read as well so that helps a lot. been into fantasy and ya lately
Congratulations on the 1 million!!!! I watched your channel for book reviews but stayed for your humor and personality!! Your puns are the best! Love you Jack xoxo
have been here since when you moved to Durham for the first time and what a journey you've had, from the happiness of the publication of your first book to your tears about the oxford rejection, you've shared so much with us and I am only proud of you. You making uni-vlogs or you starting the celebrity book club, you moving to Paris on your own or you bleaching you hair (it is still my favourite video on UA-cam), you launching your own stationery brand to you attending the Brits, Jack your journey has been so incredible and I am only proud of you. you deserve every single bit of this 1 million ❤
Gurnah's "by the sea" is maybe a better introduction to his work. It's told through one family, but is about zanzibar's importance in history, colonialism in east Africa, its independence & the problems under Nyerere & being an migrant in Britain.
It's an interesting Indian Ocean narrative & is one of the best books I read for my undergrad!
The best book I recently read is "Beautiful Little Fools", which centers on the women of "The Great Gatsby", it could literally be a prequel, it's that good
Oooh really interested to read this one!
I applaud you for managing to review all those books in just 10 minutes! I feel like you did give them justice and they felt complete which is insane. You’re so good with words!! Also, congrats on MILLION subscribers, you completely deserve it!
My TBR list can't take all these recommendations but they all sound so good that I'm going to have to read them
the best book i read recently is "someone who will love you in all your damaged glory" by raphael bob-waksberg. it's a brilliant short story collection that explores love in many shapes and forms. aside from classic short stories, the author also experiments with the structure of the stories (i.e one of them resembles the newspaper ad, and other is literally a story in form of a poem). it's chaotic and funny, but still manages to be deep. definitely good if you want to take a break from more depressing books, but still crave a realistic depiction of relationships.
that sounds amazing!! and it's from the creator of bojack horseman right? i need to read it!
@@azahareli yes, you’re right! you should totally read it, it’s amazing!
so you said they have different structures like a newspaper or whatever, but do you think it would be the same if i listened to an audiobook of it?
@@user-jb8mn4es4w i checked and an audiobook is read by multiple people, so i think that different structures might be executed well
@@gosiacal5533 ok thank u!
Just recently finished “Writers & Lovers” by Lily King and loved it. It follows a struggling writer in Boston, MA, who is just trying to make ends meet while writing her first novel. King writes in great detail, beautifully depicting the human experience of grieving and being an artist. Such a special book about the friends that hold us together, literature, falling in love, and trying to make it as a creative. The characters feel so real and lovable and it made me tear up several times. It’s kind of book that makes you want to write more and trust your crazy ideas. I would highly recommend putting it on your TBR if you haven’t read it yet!
This has been in my TBR for a while and I can't wait to read it
Jack I just want you to know I found your channel like last week and have chosen to spend the majority of my day watching nearly every single one of your videos. I think you might be my new favorite person? You make me excited about reading and your book reviews are addicting and I strive to have your positive attitude. That's all I love you goodnight.
I finally got around to George Orwell’s 1984 and it is up there with my favorite books ever! It’s one of those books that you want to fly through but also want to sit with each line to take it all in. I finished it in a day tho. Whoops
So good! But kind of dark as well
congrats for 1 million! i finished seven husbands of evelyn hugo 4 days ago and i just finished piranesi today. now i definitely need a 10 working days to breathe before continuing my life.
What did you think of Piranesi? I also just finished it.
Congrats on 1 million bestie you completely deserve it!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS ON 1 million!!! YOU DESERVE IT!!!
You were the first booktuber I found when I started. Your funny, charming, and have thoughtful comments and analysis. Congratulations on the one million subscribers- you deserve it. The effort you put in to your video shows in the great quality. Best book I’ve read lately (that you didn’t recommend) is Daughters Of Smoke And Fire by Ava Homa. So much about the Kurdish people in Iran that I didn’t know. I’d love to see you do a translated books series with books from different regions (you already have me reading Japanese and South Korean novels;)
congratulations on 1M! you absolutely deserve it, your videos are the best
“some silly little books for my silly little mental health” 😭
I really enjoyed this review format!
I’m currently reading “We Were Never Here” by Andrea Bartz. Lots of twists and turns, excellent pace. I’m looking forward to finding out if I’ve correctly guessed a plot twist 👀
I recently finished Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and boy is it a lot to unpack. A fireman in a dystopian society where books are burned instead of saved starts to question everything he’s done, and eventually is driven into madness. It’s descriptive and detailed in the most vague way possible. (Odd, I know but it works somehow) The main character’s wife is absurdly strange but somehow relatable and everything is a train wreck. In short, sheer perfection.
I read The Kite Runner recently and have found a new favourite writer. Congratulations on One million! Looking forward to read The bread the devil knead.🌼
jack you are the perfect company for my morning tea and ginger biscuits
I´m really glad i ran into this channel... its actually my favorite one right now! Jack is so articulate and funny! also, so nerdy i LOVE IT
One of the only ytubers I'd procrastinate gcse revision for 😌 I beat my reaction time clicking on the notif lol
I read the girl who fell beneath the sea it is magical fantasy it is based on a Korean myth of the bride of the sea god and how the sea god is asleep and only the one fated wife would able to lift the curse
It is so brilliant 😍😅😍😅
So good
This is giving me the vibe of k drama bride of the water god. The drama is based on that book?
Such a sweet tale. I did like very much. You should read too "Daughter of the Moon Goddess" is a asian reteling but this is inspired in the chinese culture and have one of the best main character that I ever read. It is a book that have adventure, a little of romance, action and strong family /friendshisphs relationships.
@@titirchatterjee1114 not exactly but yeah the myth is the same
And the k drama was so good 😊😊😊
I'm going to start that one next! I bought it because it's supposed to have Spirited Away vibes so I'm excited~
i just finished this i loved it!!
If you haven‘t yet, please read „The Book Thief“ by Markus Zusak. I absolutely loved it. It‘s a very touching, sad yet captivating and informative story. It‘s written from the perspective of Death and focuses on the life of a young girl and her family in Nazi Germany. It is the best book I have read so far this year and I would highly recommend it!!
and also I'd like to add, there is a really great movie based on this book! I watched it in school and everybody loved it
The best books I’ve read lately have been Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart, which is set in a similar circumstance to Shuggie Bain, but is darker, more mature, and somehow also even more tender and endearing. It’s my 6 out of 5 stars read of the year. I also finally read My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, thinking I would only read that one, but it was so brilliant (also very much characters > plot driven, which I love) that I immediately checked out the sequel.
i’ve recently read “hard land” by benedict wells and i loved it !! the setting was so fitting with the weather and i went into it blindly and got so surprised about the whole story !
congrats on 1 million! also the video is immaculate
Finding Me - Viola Davis’ memoir is the best book I’ve read in a while. It was such a heart-opening experience to read about her childhood and also see how her experiences shaped her into the woman we know today. Which is of course what memoirs do, but her specific stories of love, grief, poverty, finding yourself through challenges and the ways she tells them makes you fall in love with her like never before. Please read this book!!
Jack being on a time limit and yet making a nicki minaj joke and wasting his time further by telling himself to focus is peak representation of how I love my daily life ADHD
My recommendation is Snow by Orhan Pamuk - one of my few 5star reads for this year. Beautifully written, set in East Turkey and discusses fundamentalism and how the west views Islamic cultures and is one of those books where the location is so vivid it feels like its own character - very atmospheric, felt like I was there.
Congrats on 1 million! You deserved it! ✨
just coming back here to say THE BIGGEST CONGRATULATIONS for 1 million subscribers 🔥🔥🔥🔥 so so proud of you!!! seeing you grow as an youtuber made me sooo happy
Congratulations on 1 million ❤️ you deserve it so much
i’m so pleased you read boy parts! i first started watching you a week before i bought that book and honestly i credit you and boy parts for reigniting my love of reading so thankyou! congratulations on 1million, absolutely well deserved: you are such a sunshine on youtube :)
JACKKK!!!! im so proud of you and you deserve this more than anyone!!!!!
The best book I've read recently is "Of Women and Salt" by Gabriela Garcia. It is basically like a short family Saga, focused on the stories of women from Cuba and El Salvador. We learn about Cecilia, who lived in the 1800 when the war in Cuba broke out, struggling with marriage and independence. A good 200 years later, Carmen tries to save her daughter, Jeanette from an ongoing drug-addiction, while coping with her experiences of immigration to the US and childhood trauma. Meanwhile, a small child comes into their lives, fleeing her coming deportation. All these stories from powerful yet struggling women are connected, in history, family, and force.
It's a really great read with such beautiful writing, I can only recommend!
We will always be grateful for the cheesy as a charcuterie board! And yes, it’s indeed surprising what you can fit within 15 minutes lol
I recently picked up 'Ransom' by David Malouf, which is a retelling of just one part of the Iliad - the moment at the end when Priam visits Achilles to retrieve Hector's body. It was honestly spectacular, it made me feel so many emotions and reminded me why I love classic stories like the Iliad, and why modern retellings of these stories are so important. Would highly, highly recommend :)
Hey Jackie. Huge fan here, congrats to 1 million subscribers. Well deserved! 🎉 As one of your next videos, you could review books that are centered around animals, e.g., 🐈, 🐕, or 🐧.
i like this idea!
Congrats on your million! You are a great mix of personality and interesting to great book choices. My go to genre is mystery so my favourite so far is For your own Good. It's a mystery surrounding the death of a teacher at a school for mainly rich kids. It's at times quite amusing. My more literary favourite is Homecoming. Loved the journey the writer carried us through and can appreciate the level of research to cover the different periods in time, both in Ghana and America.
Congratulations jack on 1 million!! You deserve it, truly!
i completely agree with you on “the girl on the louding voice”, such an important book
congrats on 1 mil!!!!!
THE GIRL WITH THE LOUDING VOICE NEEDS TO BE MORE POPULAR ITS SO GOOD AND THE WAY ABI DARÉ WRITES THIS BOOK IN ITS OWN VOICE !!! I LOVE IT
I am genuinely impressed by how succinctly you described each book while also making sure to put in your own opinion and analysis WHILE ALSO making all of them sound enticing and interesting in such a short amount of time! You definitely have me intrigued to try some of these books! Thank you for all the great recommendations and your honest reviews! And congratulations on your 1 million subscribers!! Wish you all the happiness in the world for your success and have a wonderful day! XD
Pollyanna, Eleanor H. Porter, 100% a must read, re set my entire outlook on life and everytime I feel selfish or like being a brat I pick it up. Will be making my kids read as soon as old enough, if you haven’t read it 100% recommend (normally don’t comment on vids but felt this was a must as I’ve never heard of a book report on it!)
Jack is the only book reviewer I subscribe to. Because: he is NO nonsense. He actually talks about the books. Good grief. While the other reviewers are more about “how much personality can I exude on you!” I’m getting 2 of the books on this review. Thanks Jack.
I am currently stuck in bed and sick with Covid. Your videos have been keeping me company and your witty and honest humor is a great form of medicine. Thank you!!
i’m currently reading ‘oranges are not the only fruit’ which is a coming of age story about a lesbian who is adopted by evangelists… so far it’s quite interesting
i finished this one recently, hope you enjoy it
when jack pulled out the glass i thought he was gonna turn this into a drinking game
The best is back with the best kind of videos on BookTube! Love your insanely creative and hilarious videos!
The Salvation of the Saint (A murder in Tokyo) it just holds you on edge till the very ending, many many twists and turns, the writing is just incomparable, it's about forbidden love, betrayal, marriage without prosperity, and of course a murder and detectives...
I have a feeling that ‘Magpie’ could be a great BBC Mini-Series.
That would be so good! BBC have made some great tv adaptations as of late! Highly agree!!
I read Persuasion by Jane Austen. and it is her best work i can't... and now i'm reading Call Me by Your Name for the second time. from utter bliss to sheer agony. i'm my own worst enemy lol
The book I read recently is 40 Rules of Love By Elif Shafak. It seamlessly binds multiple narratives together spanning eras, showing firsthand how we can incorporate love deeper in the way we love. It is the love story between the Sufi poet Rumi and Shams of Tabriz and their companionship and talks about the way we grow and love deeper with the people in our life and how we extend that to people deprived of that and feel the deepest rows of love, in terms of passion as well as in allowing your soul to be one with the world.
Yay! A new video! I'm a new subscriber from Philippines. I find your videos very comforting. Keep posting, I love how funny and creative you are
The best book I read recently is Dawn by Octavia E. Butler. But I also love time is a mother by Ocean Vuong. I hope you will pick it up, I have not read much poetry in my life but I am convinced it is great.
Best book I’ve read recently is normal people by sally rooney!! I’m always scared of popular books but you & all the others were so right about it. The writing style did take some getting used to but the story was amazing! As a recent college grad- it really struck a chord with me! Also, “Matilda” by Harry Styles fits Marianne so well.
“For my silly little mental health...” I never related to a statement more 😂😂
I loved The Girl with the Louding Voice, so powerful. Thanks for the reviews, so helpful!
The perks of being a wallflower - literally chef kiss. ❤
I love how happy you seem while talking about book! Loved this video. Added a few to my TBR pile. Thank you ❤️
Congrats on the 1 mil! Well deserved. I got so many good recomandations from you, I can always count on you for a great book.
CONGRADULATIONS ON 1MILLION!!!! You deserve it!!!!!!
The best books I’ve read recently were all recommendations from you Jack 😭
I've bought so many books that I've never read for a variety of reasons. I finished my first book in SEVERAL years recently and noticed it's on your shelf. It's "A Man Called Ove" and I'm curious to know what you or anyone else who has read it thought of it. Reading is one thing that I'd really like to get into more so I have been watching a lot of your videos to look for recommendations. Keep up the good work Jack!
More like RUN don't walk to my laptop when I see Jack Edwards uploaded lol
Just finished "Daughter of the Moon Goddess" by Sue Lynn Tan and "No One Belongs Here More Than You" stories by Miranda July. I loved them both (giving them a 5 stars and a four stars respectively). Would recommend DotMG if you're looking to scratch your mythology itch and NOBHMTY if you're looking for a gritty short story collection (though I do recommend looking at the triggers as there is some really hard to deal with stuff in it).
Happiness by Aminatta Forna - bit of a hidden gem since no Booktubers seem to be talking about it. It has a great sense of place, it’s multi-layered and has this interesting parallel between urban foxes and migrants working in London. There’s an unusual take on trauma too, which is a common theme in her books.
i loved Boy Parts too! currently reading The Bennet Women by Eden Appiah-Kubi and it's chock full of diversity 👀
im so proud of u!! congrats on 1M!!!
i recently read "the priory of the orange tree" and it's amazing. it has been some time since i last picked up a fantasy book and tbh i bought it because I liked the cover but completely devoured the book. It has a lot of queer and poc characters, which is kinda rare in fantasy, and it's just really well written.
I really love this book as well, but I think the ending was rushed! There was so much stuff left that could've been explained further, so I really find that a shame.
i absolutely agree! i loved this book!
Just a fun idea for a youtube video, you could go into Waterstones and read all the books on one of the tables (where they’re laid out flat in piles). Maybe the discounted ones? Or the ones arranged by theme
Songbirds by Christy Lefteri - a story about a missing maid from the perspective of her forbidden lover and her employer. Beautifully written!
Recently read Hello Now by Jenny Valentine, I’m still confused by what I read and I’d love your view on it…love your channel and love from South Africa 🇿🇦 💕
Hey I'm from SA too. Nice to meet a fellow South African!
Wooo, I’ve found some fellow South Africans!! 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Img that’s crazy 1M! Congrats. Time is an illusion fr. I feel like it was only recently that u were still giving study tips at uni
Duck feet by Eli Percy!! Glaswegian dialect, coming of age and social class. SO GOOD
Sorrow & Bliss is turning out be surprising page turner for me! I love it.
you should read Pachinko it's told from the pov of 4 generations and it's about the colonization of Korea by Japan. An absolutely fascinating and captivating tale.
I LOVE Pachinko!
Love your channel Jack! Is there a chance you can start reviewing kindle books?
WELL DONE ON 1M JACK!!!!! well deserved
love the way you articulate your thoughts around reading and novels. congrats on 1mil
after watching i really want to read elektra and more jennifer saint books. it sounds so enthralling to me i can't wait to find it in a bookstore
Thank you so much for another video. Congratulations on 1 million 🥰
The Girl with the Louding Voice is so good! One of my favorites! ❤❤❤📚
where the crawdads sing is a book I read recently and turned in to my favorite book! It's so unique in writting style and storyline!
As far as books this year we have enjoyed… Our book club read “Our Lady Jane” and at the time I was like “yeah this is kind of a fun book but just okay.” But ever since I finished it- I haven’t stopped thinking about it and miss the characters (I heard it’s a series but I have some other books on my list before I look into that lol). I find also me comparing novels to it. You should check it out if you haven’t read it. It is a fantasy book and a little different but fun.
my favorite part about your channel is that you recommend books i’ve never heard of before
I'm currently reading The Paper Menagerie and Other Short Stories by Ken Liu, and I'm genuinely loving the stories so so so much? They have this modern fairy tale feel to them, and the metaphors and writing is so visual and lovely and just AAAH. There's a lot of stories based on Chinese history, folk stories and culture - which I'm just so smitten by. I'd really highly recommend it even though I've not even finished it yet myself! I want to hug and kiss the book everytime I finish a story and so often it makes me emotional too.
Alsoo another one - LaserWriter II - it's a bit different from the usual stuff but so charming and a complete experience honestly. Short and sweet. Loved it. I got the recommendation from an ask I posted on Reddit and it normally would not have crossed my radar, so really glad to have found it!
