Yes, there are lot of people trying to tell you what to carry. You do you, be yourself. People come in all shapes and sizes, so right for me vs you? Could be very different. If it is a weapon you are good with and you like, roll on. I make a threat assessment of where I am going and what the environment is there. That drives what I carry. At the ranch, I have a G19 on the hip every morning for my daily tasks. I live 60 miles from the border in Texas. (high threat due to remoteness and illegals constantly trafficking the area and the incidents we have had in my county coupled with how few sheriff's deputies we have. Response times are roughly an hour and a half.) Going to town for feed, groceries, church etc. I will carry j-frame Smith or Ruger SP 101 and a couple of speed strips of ammo. I have an AR in the steel lock box under the back seat of the truck and mags and it goes everywhere I go. If I have to go to the big city, I am carrying the G19. Assess the threat. Do it often. Carry all the time.

I often carry my Shield Plus 9mm (15 rounds) in a Vedder Pocket Locker holster (along with 2 additional 13-round mags and a Chiappa Rhino 6-shot .357 at 3 o'clock. Be safe in Texas, my friend.

I do exactly the same thing. I have a full sized AR15 with loaded mags in a steel lockbox under the back seat of my truck.
But on my body, I am likely to carry a J frame in .22 Magnum or .32 H&R Magnum. Other times I’m carrying a SiG 365. Other times I am open carrying a Colt SAA in .45 Colt. I’m carrying the Colt more and more because I just like it.

As I have owned, reloaded, shot, tested many, many firearms in 45 years is still believe for the average person a good solid revolver is a wonderful option. in the pray and spray generations we have many don't have good training. I own pistols and revolvers and equally proficient with them. most people not. they say revolvers don't have enough rounds. my advice is for them to slow down , make proficient shots, practice, practice, practice and quit the sloppy pray and spray methods before they get shot by a marksman. every shot intentional. master that and be a good Shot with either revolvers or pistols. Papa wishing you well. 😊

A snub nose has its place for sure. At home thats what i carry. I dont want to answer the door with an exposed firearm. The ability to pocket carry is unmatched. And its unobtrusive i can relax while carrying it. The double action revolver is a safe but ready to go platform. A striker fired autoloader needs to have a good or even perfect holster to achieve that safely. And like Greg said it comes down to your responsibility and the time and place that should determine what you carry.

Interesting comments you made here. I watched a video interview a few days ago from a retired Federal agent who now does private training and he was discussing the more common myths of carry pistols. He had some surprising data that really caught me off guard. He explained that his choice of carry now especially when travelling was a 22mag revolver. He talked about the autopsy reports and several other data points showing the 22 caliber had a higher kill percentage than other calibers. While it didn't have the power it penetrated just enough and they found people fired more rounds on target so more hits were scored. It was interesting interview how the numbers were viewed differently.

I had taken a break from revolver carrying the last month, and carried a CZ P-01. That changed yesterday, when I bought the newly released Heritage Roscoe. The Roscoe is a 2” steel .38 special +P five shot revolver. I’ve owned several S&W Model 36 revolvers, and the Roscoe’s fit and finish are equal to any of the 36’s. Ultimately it’s not likely you’ll need more than 2 or 3 rounds to defend yourself from a normal robber. But in this day and age with mobs attacking and depending on your skill/training you may need more rounds. MANY more rounds. It’s an individual choice YOU have to make. I think everyone should go with an automatic pistol as a default. And that’s as a BIG revolver fan. But in the end YOU have to make the determination based on the context of YOUR most likely self defense situation. My _opinion_ is and _should_ count as mostly or entirely _irrelevant._ God be with you no matter what what you choose.

    • @LionquestFitness
      @LionquestFitness  Місяць тому +6

Your opinion counts. Context is king. Where you live and the particular crimes that could occur in that area have a lot to do with what you carry. I live in a low crime, suburban/rural interface. I base my carry on what things I could actually face and my own capabilities as I age. As things change, I'll change my philosophy of carry. I recommend anyone constantly evaluate what they are doing and why. Any firearm provides a false sense of security if it languishes in a drawer and it is never trained with or carried.

Greg, I hope your viewers paid attention to what you said regarding your “three criteria” for carrying a firearm. I thought you clearly and plainly summarized the reasons and requirements. And yeah, I have seen first hand for many years people, carrying something they’re not comfortable with because someone told them it was the “minimum” requirement or that’s what was issued without regard to the fact that “one gun doesn’t necessarily fit every shooter.” If someone is carrying something like a J-frame/LCR in .22LR/Mag or an M&P 22 Compact or Ruger LCP II in .22 and can rapidly place an cylinder or magazine’s worth into a baseball sized group at 15 feet, I’d say they are sufficiently skilled to defend themselves from most threats.

I'll say it again and I'm only repeating what many in the know all across the firearms community would say: Carry a firearm on a daily basis, train and practice with that firearm, and be of the mindset to use that firearm if you or another is in deadly peril. Hovering over all is knowing and complying with the legal guidelines and laws in your jurisdiction.

He mentioned limited capacity, and he even said they fail more often than a semi-auto. Thankfully, many people disagreed with him in the comments section. Luckily for me, a 5 shot revolver is usually going to be adequate. Something I always try to practice is situational awareness. Always looking around to see potential sources of trouble and best escape paths. That way, hopefully I never need to use my firearm in self-defense and if I do, the odds are in my favor.

There was some religious fervor involved and the guy was wearing the security guard uniform from where he worked. An off duty police officer and firearms instructor stopped the attack with nine rounds to center body mass, but retreated as he did it and almost stumbled, hence the practicality of the failure drill. Let's see if this passes muster.

The Agency I retired from issued Glock semi autos as their primary sidearm & S&W Model 642's as backups carried in an issued ankle holster & I still use that arrangement because I find it flexible.....
I travel by auto a LOT & having the 642 in an ankle holster is much faster to draw while seated behind the steering wheel because my primary may be blocked by the seat belt.
& if I need to go into anywhere that deep concealment is needed, I can leave my primary locked in the gun safe in my vehicle & pocket carry the 642...
To me it's not a choice between semi auto or revolver...I routinely carry both at the same time.
& You definitely nailed the 3 requirements... especially the last one... having the best firearm made & intensive practice are both useless without the mental/emotional commitment to do whatever it takes to survive an attack.

At the moment, my handgun choices are very limited. A 15 round Shield Plus 9mm, a 6-shot .357 Chiappa Rhino, and the impractical but stunning, 8-shot .357 627 Performance Center (2.6 inch barrel) named Jerry II. Sadly, my used Rhino has 3 bad chambers that may likely be a timing issue. A local aged-genius gunsmith has the gun, but hasn't gotten around to it yet. I'll probably end up sending it to Chiappa and paying them to fix it. The three chambers that work demostrated that the Rhino is a great, mild shooter. In the future, I'll likely get a Lobo enhanced pancake holster for that one and maybe some nicer grips, if any can be found.. As for my Shield Plus, it resides in a Vedder Pocket Locker holster or sometines in a 1791 belt slide holster. I'm thinking of having sone non-flashy laser engraving done on the polymer frame and also having the slide cerakoted to remove that annoying "billboard". "Caution.-Capable of firing with magazine removed." I may also possibly add some night sights, but that's as much as i want to spend on a cheaper gun. And finally, on to my 627 PC. I'm just 10 weeks away from receiving my Lobo leather enhanced pancake holster (with smooth leather lining) and hopefully even sooner for my Altamont grey and black G10 NU grips (with the laser-engraved S&W logos) to arrive. I carried the latter daily for a year. I still plan to carry it at least a time or two each week.

That said, those loaded chambers won't work at all on the range. Awhile back, Chiappa said they could fix it for 115-150 dollars. I only have 500 in it and the new ones go for 1-1-0-0 to 1-2-0-0 or so. Forgive me for being cryptic. YT doesn't like msrp info being given out. Anyway, if this 90+ year old gunsmith can do some "judicious filing" and fix the revolver for less money, that's great. He has a lot of irons in the fire, and some other customers' jobs have been placed ahead of mine. It's been 3 weeks. I'm giving him one more week before I call Chiappa.

Greg, very concise and well thought out content for this video. The aspect of different purposes along with good practice regimens and consideration of environment and location/setting was great. Like you I carry a snub nose revolver most often, either my S&W 637 pc tuned with extended grip or my Ruger .357 LCR. For very deep concealment my S&W 351 PD 7 shot .22 Mag. Otherwise, for more capacity, the 9mm S&W Shield plus w/ night sights. Or deep concealment 9mm my P938 Legion 9mm also with night sights. Thanks, sir!

Its simply to hot here in Steamy humid florida for large gun carry (in my opinion). I typically carry either my taurua 856 owb with extra speed strip or my ruger lcp2 in 380 with 7 rounds plus an extra 6 round mag. Now i do mount either my mossberg 590 in 410 or my 12 gauge coach gun on my tractor when working on my farmette. Now when my daughters husband gets out of jail in august i may have to upgrade to my beretta 92 in a chest rig when working on my farm. He has threatened me and has quite a few meth head cronies willing to help him.

Nice video, and timely. I am helping my granddaughter decide on what to carry when she turns 18 next year (18??? What??? When did THAT happen???)
But you are showing a few years there too...that is a Ruger Security "9" Compact. The Security 6 is a great choice as revolvers go, but a tad heavy like most full sized steel revolvers are. They are so good I have two! Another advantage to the Security 9 is that is the standard magwell used in the Ruger PC9 carbine
What do I carry? A polymer wonder 9, of course! Usually a Taurus G3C or a PSA Dagger with the grip reduced to a G26 length, with a 12 round mag. Because it is lighter and less bulky (ie: flatter) particularly with a spare magazine, compared to a similar sized revolver and speed loaders. But I really try to stay out of places where the extra firepower over a revolver is needed.
But like they say, if I knew I needed a pistol, I either wouldn't go at all, or I would show up with a rifle & shotgun, with a bunch of friends with rifles & shotguns! {!-{>

😂It was a Freudian slip with the Security Nine; conflating it with the Security Six. But, I can relate on children and grandchildren growing up. That is why I try to spend time with my grandchildren as much as possible. As for your choice in carry? I think it is perfectly reasonable and well thought out. I have a G2C that I keep hidden and locked up as a spare. It's a good shooter. As well, I know many people who really like the PSA Dagger.

My M&P340 is essentially the same as a 442 but with better sights, almost as good as the 640. It would be nice to load it up with hot magnums for effect. Due to physical constraints, a lower recoil option has been on my mind. How do you feel about 148gr full wadcutters or 158gr LSWC loaded at standard pressure vs 110gr JHP loaded for +P? My random research has been suggesting that anything that can poke a proper hole, especially if it can break a bone, is going to be sufficient for a "get off me" or "break in contact" type of gun. Consistency in form factor and comfort of carry is important to me. So it comes down to appropriate ammunition.

I think one thing these proponents of "15 rounds (or more) in the gun, FS fighting pistol, and 2 spare mags" forget is, most of us aren't military or LEO. We carry to help us get out of a situation, not go towards an issue.
Today, I was in a NP CITY, in my alread NP state, at a festival that mqny woyld have froke OUT if they realized I (ornothers) was armed. In a very light T-shirt.
LC380 (NOT LCP) in 9x18Mak and a spare mag. 15 total. Very conealable and light. Fit whatbI was wearing, well.
Got home to my (rural) area, put on the 640.(and more comfortable clothes.)
Ibguess, accorsing to some, I am "gonna git kilt in the streets!"
