This was the last Detroit built Packard, the next year, Packards were manufactured in South Bend Indiana at Studebaker. They were smaller cars that didn't sell well. The '56 was "The Greatest Packard of them All".

Sad story that one of greatest motor cars of USA is no longer!

It really is. It would have been great to see what they would have been able to produce next. Let alone, what they may be doing today if they were still around.

The saddest loss in not only the American automotive industry but perhaps in all of American manufacturing industry due to American excellence and pride.

This really is a beautiful Packard. If anyone here familiar with the (also) beautiful '56 Lincoln sees styling similarities, it's because it largely was designed by the Packard guys as well, Lincoln hired from Packard. On a personal note, Packard was always a favorite of my Dad's, and would remind me that the year I was born ('57) was the first year of no real Packards anymore. Just 'Packardbaker' 4-door sedan and station wagon with a Packard-esque front and rear end. I've seen the print ads for the '57s, and have to give them an A- for effort in trying to keep the illusion, and name, alive for just a little bit longer back then.

It's sad that Packard's suspension was never used by other manufacturers. Citroen and British Leyland had their versions of this, in principal. But were more complicated and intricate to manufacture

It is a great suspension system when it is working.

Why Packard Went Bankrupt Along With Kaiser-Frazer? Some Of Them Were Nicer Than Cadillacs.

It was a combination of the 1958 recession and Packard showing up too late with their own V-8

Packard didn’t go bankrupt. They bought Studebaker, and it was Studebaker who discontinued the Packard line after 1958. And for the record, Studebaker didn’t go BK either - they just stopped making cars in 1966.

Packard’s CEO could have merged with Nash and Hudson but he had a soft spot for Studebaker because his father had one when he was a child and he liked their styling. It was a bad move from an engineering perspective as the other two had far more to offer and the three combined could have been a giant competitor with a three tiered offering in the market ready take on the big three. It was an awful decision because Studebaker was hiding their financial situation and disclosures and Packard walked into a disaster that didn’t allow them to develop new products which meant that they were relegated to producing rebadged Studebakers with Packard badges and grills. They didn’t sell and people mocked them and called them Packardbakers. Product seized by 1958. and Studebaker was off of the market by the early 1960s save for their beautiful sports car the Avanti which ran for decades with Corvette motors in them after the company closed.
Side note; After Studebaker failed to disclose their financials to Packard resulting in the collapse of both corporations laws were passed requiring companies to disclose finances in all mergers.

Wrong aspect ratio. 16:9 when it should be 4:3. Everything looks stretched out sideways.
