As a part of the centennial celebrations the National Packard Museum held the largest Packard vehicle display known to date. This video was produced showcasing the event.
The video quality is average. I will attempt to upload a better copy when possible.

    We had a 1939 120, a 1949 Super Eight, and a 1951 Patrician 400. Each succeeding model was more refined. My favorite features are: 1939 interior space; 1949 front grille with matching rear trim, 1951 ultramatic transmission.

    18:00 1937: That year, the Packard Rifle Club shot 3 Cadillacs, 2 Pierce Arrows, 14 Ford V8s and an unspecified number of foreign cars....     My GGGrandfather wouldn't buy anything but Studebaker Wagons . Grandfather bought nothing but Studebaker Cars . I have a 64 Avanti R2 as my pride and joy.

    My Mom's first car, received as a birthday present from her first husband, was the newly streamlined, designed by Dutch Darrin/first year of production, 1941 Packard Clipper 4 door sedan. It had a 356 CID 180 HP straight-eight engine. For 1941 that was the most powerful engine of any American production car and used even in the Packard 180 Super limousine. It also had a 3 speed manual transmission with overdrive (three-on-the-tree shifting replaced the floor shift as standard on nearly all American cars by 1940). It had an all black exterior and grey mohair interior. Radio, turn signals, clock, real wood dash and interior door trim, and heater/defroster were standard on Packards, optional or not available on lesser brands. The wide white side-wall Rayon tires, fog lights, spotlight, and exterior windshield visor were OEM/dealer added options. Top speed was 120 MPH. This car climbed Mt. Washington in N. H., and was driven from Boston, MA. to Washington, D. C. 18 years before the Interstate Highway System had been completed! It was a great car. As a luxury car brand along with Cadillac and Lincoln, it sold for about three times as much as the low--priced Big 3 (Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth).

    I believe this is from late, late 1956, or early, early 1957 since the cars shown at the end are ‘57 models. However, the cars in the beginning and middle are from 1955 (footage probably is from 1954) since I see a ‘55 Chevrolet, ‘55 Pontiac, ‘55 Oldsmobile.

    While most people weren't totally impressed with the 1957 Packard Clipper, even the dealers acknowledged the new Packard was better than the alternative--which was no Packard at all. It should be noted the "Clipper" name was dropped for 1958. In fact, there were no other model names than the "Packard Sedan," "Packard Hardtop,' "Packard Station Wagon," and "Packard Hawk."

    Packards were utterly amazing jewels of engineering, often clothed with the most beautiful bodies of the times. Modern viewers have little to compare them to. I know times change but nothing like these gorgeous motorcars will ever be produced again. Automotive legends. Thanks from the UK, great video.

    Take a good look at the dealers in the audience. At least half of them knew that was an bogus product, so they flew the coop and signed up to become EDSEL dealers ! I would have too....as I would have rather sold the loser Edsel than the losers that Studebaker produced. Anything associated with Studebaker was a Disgrace to the Packard company

      Yet, Studebaker had a solid hit on its hands in '59 and even into '60, while Edsel died on the vine.

      @@billpressler5319 And what really hurt Studebaker was when The Big Three introduced their own compacts for 1960. The people who signed up for Studebaker dropped their franchises when the Corvairs, Falcons and Valiants became available. Even the Comet--sold by Lincoln Mercury--was to have been the compact version of the Edsel, to replace the big Edsel in 1961

      Ever notice that most automakers in their dying years showed pictures of the cars going away from the camera? (I remember the same phenomenon when Oldsmobile ended production in 2004)

    Claiming that rear coil springs require a torque tube and that Hotchkiss Drive allows for a better ride is just so much hype. Neither is true. Claims that the L head is better were actually accepted by many in the early 40s, but by the end of the war, it was becoming obvious that the valve in head configuration was going to win out despite it's disadvantage in noise.

    Actually, the straight 8 really is the smoothest. It's negatives are it's length and it's long twistable crankshaft. Oldsmobile and Pontiac both went to huge 3 inch crank journals on their biggest engines in the late 60s. Imagine how big and heavy the journals would have to br on a straight 8 of the same size.

    The introduction of the Lark temporarily resuscitated Studebaker. But when Ford, GM and Chrysler entered the compact car market, it was a slow death for Studebaker. Mismanagement, overly generous union contracts and not being financially able to compete against the Big 3 sealed their fate. Sad end to a once proud company.

    Even this warmed-over Studebaker was already 5 years old. No way to disguise the center box of the 3 box design. That said, they did a nice job of retooling what they could front and rear, and at an expense both companies hadn't been used to; each doing this or that every year or so, but not both a fairly major front and rear sheetmetal update.

    I’m trying to find more videos of the 1918 touring sedan. I just got a body and radiator shell a few days ago from a local hot rod builder who past away. It’s a car body he saved for decades for all the right parts. Dave had 32 fords , mercs and other popular ones in his time but he favored this car. Unfortunate the 331 hemi he had and 3 speed were sold to someone else. I still scored a rare car though

    What a riot! A Studebaker gussied up to sell as a Packard. That totally killed Packard, and Studebaker soon followed. This was the Cadillac Cimarron of the 50s. Sort of analogous to a Yugo Bentley.

      It was NOT a Cimmeron, it was an excellent automobile. The buying public was extremely fickle back then. Kaiser, Nash and Hudson died around the same time followed by DeSoto a couple years later for the same reason. Most people now do not have the brain power to understand that.

      Studebaker had its best-ever profit year in 1959, in its 107-year history. With Packard product gone and the Lark introduced, Studebaker was able to hang on building cars another several years.

    Nance featured here did most of the work to destroy Packard. Moving engine production to Utica cost $20M which Nance hid in the books. It was just vanit, and then he moved Clipper production to the Briggs planet. That was a disaster - Grand Avenue had everything required for mass production and new tooling. Packard never recovered.
