Hey Dennis, great job as always!
Gotta throw my two bits in on this fantastic reel. I hope folks will buy more of these...tell you why!
This series comes in four sizes in the USA and dollar for dollar may be the best fixed spool or spinning reel you can buy under $300.00.
The line lay on them is fantastic and the spool geometry pretty good. As such they cast far...really far. The 1600 and 2600 sizes are STILL the choice of many ACA and ICSF tournament casters.
You might be amazed at the amount of after market super-tuning parts, bearings and spools that are available in Europe and the U.K.!
Tournament carp fishermen buy 2600 model for the distance capability and fantastic drag right out of the box. These reels are smoooth...
Finesse bass fishing in the U.S. was pioneered on these reels and many championships were won using them.
Many guides in the U.S. ...particularly in Florida have these reels in their boats for the same reason. I kept them in mine because I have caught everything from mangrove snapper to sailfish on the various sizes and they are tough enough that clients can't break them, affordable enough that if they do. it's not a catastrophic loss. You can still find all four sizes for under $100.00 usd.
These are very salt water capable!
    They are easy to maintain!
The only downside is that the anti-reverse is not instant.
There ARE tougher reels...by a little bit...out there at the same price.
The Daiwa BG and the PennBattle ll for example but if you are surfcasting or need distance, nothing comes close.
There are reels that will cast further and are lighter too. The Shimano Surf Leader CI4+ for example, but is $260.00 with a drag,(The stock model has a locked spool, no drag), and is FRAGILE. I only use mine for tournament casting.
From there you start looking at Daiwa Basia's and various specialized Shimano reels that start at $500.00 and go to $1000.00 quick and are still pretty fragile.
These are NOT the Stella or Saltist.
Both very tough but limited as far as casting goes.
So the SS Tournament series occupy a very unique but broadly useful niche. Daiwa did discontinue them once but guides howled over it.
I hope more anglers will check them out so they stay in production.
Thanks for the great tutorial and for highlighting this spectacularly useful reel!
    Cheers!

I have 2 700's one Japan manufactured that I have had for 20+ years and the SSII version in 2000 and 2500 size. . All you said is correct. These are great reels and often overlooked by guys looking for the latest and greatest.

Interesting arguments about Japanese v. Taiwanese built.
They started in Taiwan after the short break I mentioned.
A lot of people really are down on the Taiwanese built reels.
I totally accept the fact that in general, most Japanese products are better made but I honestly have not seen a huge difference with this model. I own a dozen or so. Some from both countries. Some are tuned, most are not. Clients have not broken any of the newer reels yet.
You have both. What are your feelings about Taiwanese vs. Japanese built with this model?
      Cheers!

This reel is so unique you know I’m going to have to investigate. Never seen that wheel on a hammer bail. I’ve gotten a lot of schematics from Mike’s. I have a large Daiwa Emblem X 5500T reel that I use for surf fishing but I’ve never had any of the tournament Daiwa. I would think that a worm drive oscillating gear would be very efficient. I really enjoyed the video and find this reel very interesting! By the way, I sent David a lengthy e-mail today about the Mitchell 498 I just got and about what Roddy reels should I look for. He is a very interesting collector that’s for sure!

Glad to hear that you and David have connected. Lots to share! Yes, Shimano uses the worm drive in addition to Daiwa. It is very efficient. Good luck with the Roddy reels.

I really appreciate your thorough videos as well as the narration, rather than just video and some awful music. Just bought one of these little reels off eBay and look forward to reconditioning it for this upcoming season.

Thank you so much for doing this ss reel maintenance. I have had my 1300 since the mid or late 80's. I have never serviced this reel other than trying to drop oil in any opening I can find. It has always intimidated me because it looks so different from all my other reels. Also I love it so much, I was afraid of messing it up. It's a tank and has never failed me. Now I feel more comfortable servicing it myself.

If you pull the back cover first and remove the Phillips head screw (part #18), that connects the main shaft to the "levelwind", you can then slide the main shaft out BEFORE you remove the rotor nut (part #19). You will thus avoid needing to remove that "star" from the main shaft with pliers. JMO, but I don't think Daiwa meant for one to have to remove that "star" from the main shaft ASSEMBLY (part #12) in order to take the reel apart.

@@2ndChanceTackle Your welcome, Dennis. As you know, virtually all spinning reels have that "star" that blocks complete removal of the rotor. As such, I believe virtually all spinning reels have a way to remove the main shaft before attempting to remove the rotor. That being said, who knows how they are assembled the first time? (On another note, sadly, Daiwa finally quit making the original Black Gold series. Those reels may not be "refined", but they work, they keep working, and they are easy to service. I hope Daiwa doesn't make the same mistake with the Tournament SS series!)

@@2ndChanceTackle so now a couple years after this video was posted but I have a couple questions. A friend of mine is selling one of these. I don't know how old it is but seems that it doesn't have an IAR. any way of determining age? Also would be interested in value which will obviously be contingent upon age but let's assume it's older since there is no IAR. Thanks for any help.

Dennis, my daiwa spinning reel TD755H bail spring shaft nipple seems to protrude too high and wont let me close and screw in the bail arm. I tried to place the shaft sideways but that did not work. When I insert the shaft nipple inside the spring facing upward, that seems to fit best in the frame. Still cant close flush and screw in the bail arm. Very confusing. I will send a pic if I can. Thanks
