- Professor Tolkien was a close friend of C.S. Lewis, author of the Narnia books. Lewis was from North Down, Northern Ireland.
Both men were inspired by medieval narratives describing the voyages of a fifth century Irish monk named Brendan the Navigator. Brendan went on an 'Imram' - 'Adventure Voyage' across the North Atlantic in search of 'The Promised Land of the Lord'.

I wonder how much of the hiding of Valinor came from the tales of Brendan voyages? The fog that could only be pierced by the light of the Silmaril on Earendil's brow?
Tolkien adapted much of the Irish histories. Milesius standing on the tower in Hispania (probably at Corunna) and seeing Ireland. The Seven Ships he sailed in and much more. A hidden island far out in the Ocean. Tolkien had an amazing ability to find useful things for his saga in ancient European histories, geography and mythology. I don't complain of his borrowing from ours too.
