- Harrison Ford gives one of his most powerful portrayals as an obsessive inventor whose dream of creating a jungle paradise erodes into a survival-of-the-fittest nightmare. Year: 1986 Director: Peter Weir Starring: Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, River Phoenix
Love those 80s voice overs in movie trailers
Yeah miss them
Your right they were the best!
Yeah they could really elevate a trailer.
It's one thin I miss about todays trailers the voice overs.
What is the name of the narrator ?
The first movie I saw with River and blown away by the entire movie. Then Stand by me. I was born in 76. Obsessed with River as a person and actor. Just brilliant.
35 yrs old and first time hearing about this :O
Doug Casey’s Take sent you here ? :)
Is it a Mandela Effect?
Jesus I barely recognize Ford in this role. He just vanishes into this character. You can see how much he put into this performance. The manic energy, the movements, the expressions he gives even how he speaks are so radically different to his normal acting. He was deep into this role. No wonder he calls this his favorite role. It’s the only one where he was able to play someone completely opposite to himself and he nailed it. Too bad the critics gave this film a bad rating. If this succeeded then who knows how far Harrison could’ve expanded his career beyond playing charismatic handsome man. I can see why he’s checked out so much whenever he films. You can only play an archetype so many times before it just becomes stale.
For what it’s worth this was Harrison Fords best performance in my book. And this was proof that had Hollywood had the gots to do it, they could’ve used him in more roles and taken him from Gen X’s John Wayne; to Di Niro legendary levels. He’s a success and deservedly respected but he had so much more potential that was never realized until fairly recently.
Harrison Ford said this was his favorite role he ever did. Not Han Solo, not Indiana Jones, not Rick Deckard, but Allie Fox.
Really? Because this looks like a dumb movie.
For Liberty Hardly. Very dark, but extremely intelligent.
@@forliberty1805 It's also more in-depth for Ford than many of his action heroes. Is he a paranoid crackpot, a flawed genius, both, neither? It's a psychological and philosophical look at Americana of the 1980s, at least to me.
@@forliberty1805 Summarising a movie with that sentence requires a huge level of dumbness.
@@forliberty1805 if you end up watching this movie and still think it’s dumb. Oh man just stop giving people your opinion
3 years later, River Phoenix would play as the young Harrison in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”
Evelyn Verdejo young Indy
Ford insisted that Phoenix plays young Indy
River played a young Harrison it’s easy Harrison’s suggestion
I first saw this movie once when I was 10 and then once again when I was 22. At both ages, this film left deep (albeit) different heavy impressions on me. At 42, when I turn on the news - I reflexively think of this movie often. Great flick. Maybe time for a third viewing.
Try the book the movie is based on (by Paul Theroux). It's even better than the movie.
I saw it on VHS when my parents rented it, when I was 6, and the second viewing was when I was about 17. I'm 41 now, and I'm also thinking that it's time for a third viewing.
my pops had video store in 80s....i came of age watching great flicks like this over and over....and as a 50yr father of 2, i'm relating to him and Michael douglas in Falling Down more and more everyday. lol.
@@barryosers1 Oh no, don't relate to him in this movie! Maybe it's been awhile since you've seen it . . . Harrison Ford's character is brilliant, but he's also a narcissistic bipolar egomaniac that puts his family through hell
Then you'd like the sequel.
He's pretty scary in this. Worth a watch. His manic energy is exhausting but that us the point. Good film
Yes he had some Swiss Family Robinson fantasy I think and expected his hard work would persevere but no some guys come wanting to steal and kill Savages that would kill for a quarter are not just in New York.
I havnt seen this in nearly 40yrs. I've just bought it on dvd. I'm excited to watch this again
One of my favourite films ever! Definitely in my top ten.
I loved the movie 91/2 weeks, another oldie but goodie. Did you like that one?
Lemme guess, Xanadu is #2.
@@katierose1893 Not particularly.
@@1neAdam12 Bizarre guess. No, I've not seen it and have no desire, burning or otherwise, to do so.
that's kind of like River's own dad during River's Children of God days . . . River's roles mirror his life so acutely. ❤
This film was now remade into a different movie that flipped the tables of its story called “Captain Fantastic” which both movies are so similar and smartly crafted!
I saw this late one night on TV many years ago as a kid. And just a couple years ago I saw Captain Fantastic with Viggo Mortensen at the movies. While different films and performances, the two films still seem very similar, in concept and premise at least.
Reading the book. Excellent and full of so much more.
It just occurred to me that the current series 1923 is a reunion of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren from this movie
Miss those voice overs
Thanks Mr. Harrison Ford.
This film also gives one of my favorite movie insults ever.
The Reverend Spellgood tries to get Allie to convert, giving him a special Bible (called the "Blue Jeans Bible," because the cover is made out of discarded blue jeans), but Allie rejects it, and quotes Ecclesiastes. Spellgood then tries again, "There are many rooms in my father's house, but I am the door."
Allie's response is so perfect (relative to the character clash at least): *"Well, don't slam it on the way out."*
Yes well it's implied though that his rejection of the church contributed to his failings though. His ice machine was like a pagan god then Geronimo was burned down then when he set the church on fire he was shot so... it was a whole subtext theme in the film.
@@AnnaLVajda He was very cynical about the church and it's teachings. His question would probably be 'what has god ever done?' Implying relying on god isn't going to get you anywhere. Only hard work and toil will help you achieve your goals. Don't rely on god rather on yourself if you want to achieve your goals.
It is unbelievable how few people have seen this film, considering Ford and Phoenix. I guess the topics are too heavy.
I'd never heard of it but I just saw a picture of River at the Oscars of that year with Martha Plimpton and found out it was because of this movie.
also Peter Weir Director and Paul Schrader writer
Telling Americans that our insanely greedy unsustainable consumer society is kinda sick and is not going to hold up is kinda of bummer topic a little to dark for most folks. Probably a bigger hit with the ex-pat community thought.
I've been thinking about this movie today though I haven't seen it in 25+ years
This was his scariest performance.
Look around bruh, It's happening on a massive scale.
What is?
@@yakamon123 Harrison Ford. He plays the crazy utopian perfectly.
@@MondoBeno Ahh, the old chestnut question. What is the perfect utopian idea on earth? Lavish live styles or a simply living in nature and accepting what it offers?
And forcing his family to follow his dream, insisting that all other ways are no good.@@Do_not_assume
Clear and hot topics ... can't hurt to think about them.
River narrates the entire story about his father charactor. Great movie
"Harrison ford in his most remarkable performance..."
Nobody even remember!!! 😂😂
Well, he does. He claimed this is his favourite movie.
I remember...even when I watched it only once over 30 years ago.
Given the chance, I'd love to watch it again.
The movie may not be popular due to its themes being too heavy for most people, but Harrison Ford is GREAT in this movie.
I was in that movie,Adolfo Salguero
How was it?
Looks like I am the first here because of the Apple TV+ series. The series looks darker though.
Check out Ted Lasso on Apple TV. Friggin' hiliarious!
Harrison fords most Remarkable performance
Why Harrison Ford didn't win an Oscar for this role, the world may never know.
Because it's too good.
This trailer was poor for such a remarkable film. One of Ford's best performances.
The new Mosquito Coast is absolutely freaking mind blown.
Un grand film, featuring An Solo !
Great trailer transfer, Warner.
Remember watching this as kid and thinking it was boring and Ford wasn't likeable, but it was probably too adult for me then. I think I might enjoy it now for Fords performance, have to re-watch it sometime.
movie so good i never heard of it or seen it promoted as his best
This film along with AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD has all but been buried from film history. Why is it so hard to find a
decent cd of the later or why is there so little reference in cultural analogy to these two gems of film genius?
For obvious reason, there are deep dark topics that scare the crap out of folks. What if Ollie is seeing things clearly? My father told me in the 70's when I tried to talk about such things "Son those are dangerous thoughts be careful"
"Ice is civilization!"
So they're making this into a TV series. And the main actor ironically is the author's nephew. (And was also in one of the "Star Wars" movies...)
what's the name of the song in the trailer?
underrated
people just weren't ready to look at Harrison Ford in this light, through that lens
PG to rated R?
Mr. Hattie was the inspiration for JarJar
JOYCE KOCH: Is it possible the government does not want citizens to be inspired by these films? To not know truth and what is out in the world?
There is a mini series remake of this movie on Apple TV. It is really good.
Jack Nicholson would have been incredible in this role. Ford was okay, but Nicholson was born to play this role!
2021 anyone?
No 2023.
2024 makes me remember when he was in the store complaining about the prices and how all the products are imported ect.
Everyone has their own idea on utopia. My utopia is similar to Allie Fox. I wish I could leave this concrete jungle and live on a farm, not controlled by taxes and unnecessary expenses. I rather live a simple and humble life than live life in the fast lane.
This was before the 'sustainable farmhouse' craze came to be decades later.
Anyone here after watching the Apple TV plus Trailer?
nik potter565: yep
here after bingeing the first season.
No but drinking hard cider!
No!! I saw this movie back in the late 80’s!! When everyone else did! Ffs. Nerds everywhere
I think I saw most of the film in this trailer.
Live in trailer park?
I love this movie
@@booons I thought they didn't do time travel. I don't know what I was thinking of 2 years ago when I said that :D Maybe the inventions part. The protagonist is so much like my dad that when he lost his temper blowing up the Big Boy I passed out in the theatre because it triggered my old fears of family violence lol.
Main difference was my dad went to Antarctica not the jungle and didn't drag his family along
Rent it for Father’s Day!
Oh...and yeah...
...he was married to Helen Mirren!
Esta peli es buenísima es una d emis preferidas de rio phoenix!!
Spare a moment for all those who haven't seen this film.

Here because of the Apple TV show.
Mind blowing show to say the least. I feel like a junkie itching for season 2.

The TV Series from Apple TV brought me here
I want to see the fulk movie.
How was the fulk movie?😅
Such a sad movie.
Rio phoenix 💗💗💗💗🙏
They don't make 'em like this anymore...unfortunately.
You have away with words, word man.
Jack Nicholson would have been perfect for this role though, and the studio/producers paid Harrison Ford the same salary that Jack was demanding.. But I'm sure they figured all around less headache, and we don't want this guy to think he's worth 'less' than Jack, even if he didn't have quite the pedigree, aside from the Star Wars movies, which he wasn't even the primary protagonist.. I also think it was to spite Jack...
Too bad, he would have been so much better, as this is totally 'his type of character.' Harrison Ford was too straight laced/women found him hunky... Although I'm glad he enjoyed playing the part.
"im gonna straighten his hair"
Hopefully tge end of the book wont show in the movie!😵😵
Savage wilderness??? Really?
Here from Louis Theroux (theroooooooooo not theroh)
Are they related to the author or something
Not a fan of Ford as a person but you can't deny his acting chops
Really I heard he’s a nice guy in real life he just doesn’t like too much media attention
I feel bad for those pretend kids.
Jack would be better choice for this film.
Hugh Jackman should play Harrison Ford's character in a remake.
Two things that could be erased. Pointless remakes and stupid people.
Why make a remake?
HF the mad dad
As traumatic as this experience was for the mother and her children, it pales in comparison to the barbaric savagery that U.S social workers and psychiatry have done/are doing to many American families.
His downfall was probably due to not converting his family to Christianity.
True. I do not know about finding religion.... But one thing is for sure - when this movie was made people thought that this movie showed the dangers of the Right. Now we are here - and so is the Left. We are so close to OVER - even the right doesn't even know.
The White Savior Coast
How can the evolution theory hold up against the fact that humans thousands of years ago built structures that cannot be replicated by current “evolved” human technology?

I don’t know what is going on but… There have been more than hundreds of millions of Missionaries, Archeologists and Linguists all over this damn Earth.
All in search of one thing… Ancient technology lol.
In my opinion, and there it shall be, time and accomplishment is like a swinging pendulum.
Look around, all the white accomplishment is being erased before our very eyes!
I think the aforementioned people, archeologists, missionaries and linguists…interpreted a LOT of things wrong.
and all that I can do is lol.
Very beautiful Movie although for today standard racist.
But you need to understand for than it was normal to see other nations as primitives and treat them like children.
Could 10% of the Europeans go back to Europe?I think North America would be happy!
OMG
The music doesnt match the trailer hahaha
80's film music was cheesy, and that really didn't change for good until the mid 90's.
But we had the narrator with that voice!

River Phoenix could have used more Christian values in his life. Unfortunatly he was raised an athiest and died from doing drugs.
No group is more hypocritical than westernized, mainstream Christians.
Your first and last of 3 points are true, but River was not technically raised atheist. His family was in a weird cult called the Children Of God, one which used child labour and encouraged "free love". It would have been enough to drive anyone atheist.
GFY
No Religion has monopoly on morality. The history of christianity especially in the West is not clean and pure. We had christian groups backing fascism during World War 2.
@@WithoutRemorse12 Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Lenin, Pol Pot etc. None were Christians and all of them killed over 100 million people.
Good film, terrible trailer. The voice alone, as if he were announcing the new Terminator. Typical American advertising aesthetics.

The show is beautifully shot and gripping. Amazing show. Have no clue what u mean.
