But as David Lynch has said himself it was flawed, cut apart and you really need to have read the book to see it and understand it. However, if it wasn't for the pre-scouted pitfalls of the 80s Dune adaption I doubt Villneuve would have succeded now with the new version. He could build on your creation and made sure that even audiences who hadn't read the book could relate and understand it. Doubly so with his Dune part 2 that can, and for many are, watched as standalone. Yet they get it and find it an enjoyable movie. Sitting down with my Mom to check out "this new show" Twin Peaks, and being instantly absorbed, has always been a favorite memory of spending time with her.
He looks so much younger with the grey hair. Dune spicediver 4k on youtube is amazing. Remember seeing Dune in theatres and liking it except for some wonky effects & the outloud thinking..but loved the soundtrack. Saw Blue Velvet in theatres expected something else & hated it for the weird acting but loved the soundtrack & song and bought them..and slowly after months of thinking about it loved the movie then rewatched on vhs and fell in love with it.
Aside from the David Lynch stuff I loved The Hidden (1987) with Kyle in the leading role as well as him playing the drug dealer in Where The Day Takes You (1992). I used to get him and Charlie Sheen mixed up at times in the early '90s.
I was struck by how after the release of Villeneuve's Dune, and especially part 2, everybody was suddenly also talking about the old Dune. The strengths and weaknesses of both. Especially after part 1, lots of people preferred Lynch's Dune because it had more of a unique character. So I saw old videos of young Kyle MacLachlan everywhere. And then Fallout comes out and he's in that too! I hadn't seen him in ages; loved him in Dune, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, but never watched Sex in the City, for example. But suddenly Kyle is back. It's great. Great guy.
dune 84 was a great film. had really good casting. the actors could actually act. I like the new version but the casting is reliant on a couple good actors to carry the rest. I don't care for changed characters or added ones.
I don’t understand this, every actor is phenomenal in the new dune, while the old one is stunted by really strange acting choices and downright cringeworthy dialogue
I'll never understand the critiques of Lynch's Dune, it's so good! And of course I love Kyle in it. So interesting to learn it was a comfort book for him!
Love Kyle! He's been a formative figure in my childhood. Cooper was a wonderful character and it really made me want to be someone that was just, kind and a little goofy sometimes.
When I was about 13, I was home alone on a quiet Saturday and Dune came on cable. I had a transformative experience watching it in front of the TV. I’ve rewatched all the edits and frequently quote it with my friends today. It remains the definitive version in my mind so much that when I read the book, I was kind of disappointed that a few movie elements weren’t the same in writing. I’m actually a huge fan of the use of sonic power as a weapon as depicted, especially the final use. The new movies look visually interesting but the storytelling just didn’t have the same visceral impact as 1984 did.
Dune is a movie which ages very well for me. I seem to enjoy it more with every watching. A great piece of work. Twin Peaks I like so much for the settings in the North West. The music was excellent. And it had a unique cast of very well playing actors. A unique master piece as well. Thank you very much!
I think that was the first interview I've ever seen with Kyle MacLachlan, and it didn't disappoint. I love that he tried playing the games beforehand, but I am still curious which game it was. Probably Fallout 4 since he was playing on his son's console, I'd wager. It was also really interesting hearing about him meeting David Lynch and all that: I could've listened for hours. Anyways, you asked some great questions and it was a lovely interview.
22:00 I was just thinking, he'll say, "I wore my stilsuit." When he said, "I wore my stillsuit!" Loved it! And glad he thinks there's room for both movies. In the book, stilsuits are worn under robes. So, maybe you could hide it under oversized sweat pants and a big hoodie.
Its actually interesting that as an American the threat of nuclear war didnt have much impact as here as an Aussie in the 80s it was pretty pervasive. The cold war, the threat of nuclear war, it was part of the media landscape and part of the cultural and political landscape. For me it was part of TV, music and art. At elementary school they made us watch the movie The Day After. There were big movies like Wargames as well that had nuclear war as the central threat. So speaking for myself as a child of the 80s, the threat of nuclear war was never far away. It wasn't something I particularly obsessed over as I was a kid and you tend to be much more focus on the present and the day to day, but the threat of nuclear war was always an undercurrent there, like a vague unpleasant smell or a barely perceptible hum that you cant pinpoint but you can feel in your bones. Like I say, I was a kid so I wasn't really losing sleep over this stuff, but it was always there. It just goes to show that even on another continent, the effects of the cold war were strong enough to flavour my childhood. I had thought the feeling would be there for Americans too, but I guess it depends on what part of America you grew up in.
Great movie, great acting, amazing Sound Track, great weardrobe, great sets, some iffy visual effects (could do with a lift up), but also amazing ones. People complain of the whispered thoughts. I love them. And yes I'm talking about the Lynch version.
Watched Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Dune while in college. Just fell in love and became a big fan of Kyle's. Can't bring myself to finish the 3rd season of Twin Peaks though. Hope to see more of him in Fallout S2.
I'm very nearly done Season 3 of _Twin Peaks._ Persevere. That's all I can say. Lynch teases us for nearly the entire season before giving us what we want, but he _does_ eventually start tying up loose ends that even go back as far as the movie.
Casting him was a genius move, he’s perfect for it. I do feel like Twin Peaks and Fallout have a very similar vibe to it but it’s distinct in it’s own ways. Nice interview.
They both make use of MacLachlan's ability to play equally convincing good-guy and bad-guy roles; both series habitually switch between comedy and gut-wrenching drama on a dime, and both series make stellar use of their ensemble casts. That said, I'm not sure David Lynch would ever want to make a series like _Fallout_ anymore than Jonathan Nolan would think to make something like _Twin Peaks._ I see what you mean. There's crossover, for sure but they are their own thing.
Dune was a GREAT MOVIE !!!! Kyle MacLachlan was a Hero ! It was a great show. I have watched the movie Dune 1984 several times and it is Much better than the recent Dune 2023. I wish this interview was just about His time making the movie . What details could he tell...?
Lynch Dune is good but to say that is better than the recent adaptation is an utter farce. The recent films are a MUCH better adaptation of the source material.
I for one have always loved his version of Dune,I’ve seen many different cuts including the original,TV and fan edit on here and I’ve enjoyed every single one of them..Twin Peaks is and has always been an absolute masterpiece of television but one movie of his that not much is spoken about is The Hidden and that’s a relatively forgotten sci-fi crime action thriller about and alien on the run that hides inside humans and is addicted to fast cars and crime
I did not know that Kyle was a big fan of the book (as am I). This blew me away and re-ignited my appreciation of him as an actor. I checked his IMDB and was reminded that he was, also, in Hidden. That was another great sci-fi movie!
I agree that there is a place for the new and the old Dune movie. I love Denis' version but Lynch's version has a special place in my heart. Back in the 80s, a friend of mine and I were super into Dune. That movie inspired me to read the amazing books and Kyle will always be Paul to me 🙂 I'm not embarrassed to admit that, at some situations in my life, I recited the litany against fear 😉
One of the best Q guests in a long time. Great actor. And for the record - there are so many fans of Dune 1984. I am one of them. While I enjoyed the new one, I think MacLachlan's portrayal of Paul was solid and closer. Fallout is excellent and MacLachlan is one of the best parts.
awesomes that he is a fellow Washingtonian too born n raised here myself i love Dune all my life after the holy bible i read the Dune novel by Frank Herbert while other kids was quoting Dr. Seuss i was quoting lines of the novel it really helped me a lot to understand very intricate stories and i love the mystery and story of it all and the movie is always a treasure to me i put the 3 of them together David's the syfy version and Villeneuve's version each one tells different aspects of the story in a specific way and good to watch i hope Denis goes all the way to Chapterhouse, i watched so much of Mr. MacLachlans works big fan through and through i hope one day to shake his hand and say thank you sir for your inspiration.
I've seen both parts of the new Dune and I think it was great. An amazing achievement. Still, I prefer 1984's version slightly more and for a variety of reasons. Sad David Lynch does not care for it, but I get it.
He really would have done much more interesting movie if the company would, have gives him permission to do two part movie! He did have to cut so much because of Only having one film… and Lynch is dreamer/builder… and there were not room to build.
Someone mentioned an older Paul Atreides might work, and I kind of agree. He does look like he could pass for an older Chalumet, and considering he was the original, it makes poetic sense too.

For me DUNE 1984 is one of the best sfiction movie ever made.I actually like much more Dune from David Lynch , then the new one from Villenouve which also is great , but not that great
I just watched Twin Peaks for the first time after watching Fallout and getting inspired by Kyle who suggested us millennials to go and give the show a go and I was not disappointed.
Back in 1986, my girlfriend and i travelled to a nearby capital city where the city's art gallery was hosting an exhibition of some works by Claude Monet. One evening we went to a screening of Blue Velvet , left that viewing quite stunned. Anyway when my girlfriend told her mother of the various things she had seen she noted that she saw a movie called Blue Velvet. Her mother was a regular player with a group of elderly women croquet players and she corralled them into going to a screening of this new movie called Blue Velvet a sequel to International Velvet. The good women went , but lasted up until Dennis Hopper appeared. God I wish there was a video record of them at that screening.
I loved Dune even though the Navigator's scared the heck out of me as a kid 7 or 8, I would always watch, if I caught it on HBO or the tele...Kyle is a great dude, I had some years in the PNW, beautiful area. Fallout was great! Dune is always going to be tough nut it is a great story but it is so thick it really needs to be drawn out in a serial form to let us get intimate with the characters...You could do a movie on the prologue to Dune to give the audience the background and follow up with a series on the chapters. Frank Herbert really did a great job of predicting how our civilization could play out...I worry with AI and Machines we may follow it out very closely...
I hope the movie and television industry take heed of the positives coming from Fallout and how they utilized this existing world in such a good way. It owes a lot to the games of course but it tells its own story and has its own unique traits that make the storytelling good overall. Loved it. They struck a good balance.

Lynch managed to convey that quality of 'otherness' and strangeness to Dune , something Villneuve seems utterly blind to.

This as a fan of both makes me so happy.
Thank you for making Dune and Twin Peaks and all the other things. It's given me great joy in my life to watch and re-watch them. Sometimes while making my own cherry pie to eat to it. :)
I'm adding Fallout to that as well now that I've seen the entire first season. What a great show and what a treat that you are such a key part to it.
I watched David Lynch's Dune when it came out in the cinema, and is still to this day my favourite movie ever!!!!
All his shows are amazing!! Fallout is so good too, love his character
I just watched Dune Part 2 and absolutely loved it. I still adore Lynch's version equally. All 3 movies are amazing and masterfully done.
Great series so far, just finished season 1 last night. 👍
It's great. Great guy.
Great interview,,, really enjoyed it
He seems like a very down to earth guy, with the best chin in the business to boot!
Great head of hair!

dune 84 was a great film. had really good casting. the actors could actually act.
The Dune movie from 84 is one of my favorite films. In its difference it’s a unique and it pulls you in.
Never played but loved the series...really loved KMcL flying off in the mech...badass....
I write Fallout Fan Fiction on Wattpad.
I’m currently writing Fallout: Long Island New York.
I finished Fallout: Healdsburg.
Kyle is such a delight. Such a great interview subject
His acting in Fallout is so convincing, he is almost unrecognizable.
Great movie, great acting, amazing Sound Track, great weardrobe, great sets, some iffy visual effects (could do with a lift up), but also amazing ones.
People complain of the whispered thoughts. I love them.
And yes I'm talking about the Lynch version.
Great interview!
That said, I'm not sure David Lynch would ever want to make a series like _Fallout_ anymore than Jonathan Nolan would think to make something like _Twin Peaks._
I see what you mean. There's crossover, for sure but they are their own thing.
I love the D.L. Dune & Blue Velvet. Twin Peaks is my favourite piece of art ever . That is as all 3 seasons complete.
Fantastic interview
Surprised at how eloquent and clear he is when speaking - we need him on a long form podcast.
It sucks because I absolutely love the 1984 version
Amazed and super cool to see you bouncing back to current relevance and exposure in Fallout.
…and my daughter was named after Audrey Horne. Twin Peaks was amazing!
Kyle at the Fallout premiere was cracking me up this morning I saw some video of him just lurking around being Kyle and awesome.
Dune 1984 is amazing
Way better than the woke new one they make for sure.
@@Steger13”woke” ?
That’s the only way you could phrase whatever your critique is?
All you could do is dump that stupid word?
@@vhufeosqapmust be referring to the sleeper. Although I'm pretty sure that was in the 84 film too.
"The rightious?!"
@@Steger13the 84 film is completely dogshit the new one is better in every way
Fantastic interview. Well done.
I did not know that Kyle was a big fan of the book (as am I). This blew me away and re-ignited my appreciation of him as an actor. I checked his IMDB and was reminded that he was, also, in Hidden. That was another great sci-fi movie!
I, also, was a HUGE fan of Twin Peaks!
I'm surprised noone mentioning his brilliant portrayal as Ray Manzerek.
Awesome interview of an awesome actor. I grew up trying to emulate Kyle MacLachlan every chance I got.
He portrayed 100% a Vault overseer how I expect one to be ❤
He was in another great sci-fi movie with Michael Nouri, and Babylon 5's Claudia Christian, The Hidden.
If you haven't seen it I won't spoil it.
That was a great film!
"I wore my stillsuit." 😄
You remember a David Lynch movie or series. Kyle is an amazing actor. It can’t be easy to take on a David Lynch character.
23:30 - "Lynchian" is another common term
it'd be so cool if they could find a role for Kyle in Dune Part III
Someone mentioned an older Paul Atreides might work, and I kind of agree. He does look like he could pass for an older Chalumet, and considering he was the original, it makes poetic sense too.
China Beach was on before Twin Peaks when it aired on Saturdays. I forget what was on before it when it was showing on Thursdays.
my family's journey is the same kyle! so interesting to hear about that :)) i really wish i had family members to tell me about that history but sadly there's no older generations left. so interesting to hear about kyle's family history though
It took me years to watch the new Dune, out of a sense of loyalty to Kyle & David. 😆
He seems like a nice guy. Very pleasant.
Very good interview.Kyle seems a so charming person. With dyed hair is still identical to agent Cooper! He seems not to age at all!
Great film of Kyle's is The Hidden
I can't find The Hidden on any streaming service. Very annoying.😮😮😮
Such a class act every time I hear him speak. Great interview.
Special Agent Dale Cooper
great interview. six out of four.
Kyle MacLachlan IS Paul Atreides. Never seen the remake. Never will. I like the David Lynch movie, both his cut and the one he took his name off of. The critics be damned. And Blue Velvet most certainly on my top 10!
Long live to fighters!!!
Dune from 1984 is still my favourite. Maybe not the best book adaptation but damn fun sci-fi movie.
