This is definitely the definitive recording of this Raga on this instrument, and no one (in my opinion) has rendered this raga better. The lyricism of the Alaap, the meditative explorations, the fluidity of improvisation, the fearless attacking style, and the sticking the landing on the Taal like a gold medalist gymnast - just unparalleled. I just love how he slips into the Jhala with dexterous ease. I had a cassette of this recording, and I spent numerous hours with it in my car very late night whenever I needed to recharge myself and introspect. Sadly the cassette player in my car was stolen, and such was my misfortune, the said cassette was still loaded in the chamber. I have since heard many digitized versions that don't retain that beautiful liquid analog quality, that organic tonal texture, the silvery sheen of the strings, and that realistic sitar timber - which was on that cassette - was truly magical without all the artificial digital artifacts. I would love to get my hand on a LP of this recording, but I don't know if they are out there? I just can't believe it has so few views?? Shankar Ghosh is also quite fantastic, and never gets in the Maestro's way.
This is one of the greatest recordings of Hindusthani music of all time. When it comes to Raga Darbari, this recording of Khansahib is the standard by which all others are judged. At best, other sitarists pay homage to this version. Pt. Shankar Ghosh's accompaniment is sublime. The sitarkhani tekha that he starts with and, in particular, the modulation he applies to the bayan (25:16) is worthy of emulation by all tabla players. He makes the most of his opportunities without overstaying his welcome. My father had this on LP.
Darbari or Darbari Kanara is deemed to be the King of all Ragas of North Indian Classical Music, here in this rendition of Ustad Vilayet Khan had reached the pinnacle by his outstanding performance of this Raga,so melodious, yet so appealing to the listeners, whicb is beyond description by mere words. The grandeur of this Raga, through his outstanding rendition ,has to be mentally enjoyed as regards its inner beauty . It is really a very difficult Raga to perform upon either on vocal or instrumental music . But Khan Saheb had made his audience spellbound by his rendition of this Raga on his sitar. Really he was a genius in respect of sitar playing.
He is the unsurpassable master of Darbari in sitar. This is the best of all his renditions of the raga. For 50 minutes you can touch the Ultimate, the feet of Goddess Saraswati of Mian Tansen here.
What begins as 'listening' becomes a journey of the soul... deep within ... a musical journey of Ahat and Anahat Naad - the cosmic sound vibration .. there in between the notes... Ustadji is ultimate Musician. Pranaam To the legend.
@@ranjitsarkar2910 this piece is nothing but divine as any divinity can be. The comments of Mr Abril add to the divine journey of this melody. Blessed we are, blessed are we
I have been listening to this particular creation for the last 35 years. Always felt that the person playing the sitar is an enlightened soul. And on many occasions, specially after midnight, have sensed the presence of others around me.
This is by far the best LP record of the maestro. This LP record (on vinyl) was aptly issued with a cover titled, "The Supreme genius of Ustad Vilayat Khan". I have been listening to this exposition over the last 50 years or so with rapture and admiration! Pandit Shankar Ghosh's sensitive accompaniment on the tabla adds to the beauty of the "gat" and "jhala" and the presentation culminates in a cathartic experience for listeners.
Is far is skill to play Sitar is concerned vhk is the master of this instrument but different Raag needs different treatment while presenting it that was not giving any importance during this recording but even having this opinion I am still mad after this Darbari played by Ustad vilayat Khan.
I can only (and humbly) say that I have not meant any dis-respect to any artist. I am more receptive to viewpoints when someone mentions a cursory 'thanks' before launching into criticism (in this case, an interesting criticism).
Absolutely correct , the rendition of a Raga like Darbari Kanara ,known as the king of all Ragas, on Sitar played by Ustad Vilayet Khan, remains perhaps the best performance on this instrument for ever . The accompaniment on tabla by Sri Shankar Ghose ,a disciple of Sri Gyan Prakash Ghose was also superb ,not disturbing the rendition of the Sitar playing of Ustadji.
What a sound creation connects the soul to mind and acts as an elevator to heaven. Practically it will be possible by a carbon nanotube. I have no idea the strings of his sitar is made by carbon nanotube or anything else.
I am listening since 1976 Ustadji's program and this is the best one and raga is Darbari Kanada. It takes me in a different world in mid night with spiritual activation in me. Pranam to great soul ....
This rendition by Ustad Vilayat Khansaheb is the standard as far as a studio (LP vinyl) recording of Darbari, along with Amir Khansaheb’s studio recording. The whole world knows the magnificence of Darbari because of these two LP recordings. And the accompaniment by Pandit Shankar Ghosh is stellar and unmatched. There are live recordings of Darbari by some other artists that are also magnificent but were not available to the public for as long as this recording and the one by Amir Khansaheb have been.
Both the tracks that you have mentioned are stellar. There are two more recordings which are very dear to me. Salamat-Nazakat Ali Khan's and Moinuddin-Aminuddin Dagar's studio recordings of Darbari.
I had bought the LP and listened it so many times that it is in my memory even now prompting the next musical phrase! The cover photo of the Ustad on LP is different and so I thought this was a different recording. But it is same as on that LP.
My understanding is that Darbari & Darbari Kanhra are only different in nomenclature & not in raag-structure. Any raag, rendered in the 'raag-ang' of Kanhra will have a suffix of 'Kanhra'... and Darbari is *only* treated in Kanhra-ang (like Suha). If there is a perceptible difference, I would like to know your views on this. Thanks in advance.

This is indeed one of the rare and most famous official LP recording made by Ustad Ji in his golden age.
It's honest pure tribute to great art janaab .the grace majesty and compassion of darbhari fully expressed
