I really can’t think of any reason why it shouldn’t be done. I’d just make absolutely sure there is no mold or mildew present on the original tile and grout. Man, that would be a huge bummer. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Great video. Very informative and I loved the idea of the spacers on the back of the tile. I've watched a lot of these videos in preparation for re-tiling by bathtub surround wall and the one thing no one addresses is how to finish off the edges where the tile ends and the drywall wall begins. Really appreciate you taking the time to film it all.
My husband started to take the old tiles off the kitchen wall but the plaster was coming off with them so he suggested tiling over the tiles. I was apprehensive so he suggested googling it and we found your great video! Thank you so much Terry, i hope ours work out as well as yours have! By the way, oddly enough, we are using the exact same tiles from Wickes! Hubby is just off to get the silicone and spacers!

You can tile on top of tile. He could of use a primer, ie bal primer and then adhesive and it still would of worked. Also silicon is designed to grab most things. +Jimjim Skimmer I wonder why this method isn't the industry standard and ANSI approved? I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see signs of failure when it's 10 years old. It looks nice though, level tiles and no lippage; he is definitely skilled at measuring and makign cuts.

Genius sir, i will be using this method next month, i once ripped out a bathroom, i thought my life was going to end, the mess and upheaval was unreal, this is a better method by far, cheap and easy.
Good video . At the tile Shop of course they said " NO NO NO !! you can't put tiles on tiles . " I wandered around thinking " Why Not ? " YOU convinced me I was right . There's no reason not to do it . However - I would never have thought of that trick putting spacers behind the tiles . Very good video . Thank You .
First thing is that tiling over tiles is legit. I went to the Henkel labs and they showed me pull off tests that prove it works better than nearly any other substrate. They use their tile adhesive and it works fine. You can use silicone, I have seen basins stuck with it and they don't come off even when you want them to. Provided the existing tiles are well stuck there is nothing wrong with this method. Would I do it? No because tile adhesive does the same job.
I agree, I tiled over the original tiles in my kitchen with silicone and they have been on over a year and are stuck fast,in fact I made a mistake with one tile and when tried to get it off the next day it was stuck so well I had to smash it to get it off and even then it wasn't easy . By the way one of the main reasons I did it this way is because I managed to get the silicone tubes at a pound each.
I’ve tiled an entire bathroom and let me say that although there are better and cheaper ways of tiling over tile (mapei eco prim grip + thinset), the method he showed will work very well, silicone is insanely strong and WATERPROOF!
Very neat job.. Those tiles are going no where for many years to come,I`d put money on it. All these so called "Pro tilers" commenting on here are full of it IMO. Tile adhesive works great over tiles also.. Bish bosh, save loadsa dosh...Job done mate!
Interesting idea and great video for DIYers! Thank you so much!! A few simple requests: 1) Can you do an update video to just show the haters that the tiles are still good? 2) Also, can you do a part 2 to show how you do the grouting, and the corners/finishing - we would all really appreciate it !! Thank you sir!!
Thank you so much. Your video saved me a lot of head ache. I used hand made baked tiles in my kitchen. So hard to get off the backer board. Thank you again.
Hi , as I am an HVAC installer,we use silicone to seal AC Units. When removing old units from roof with a large crane, the silicone will not allow the crane to lift it,unless we first cut the silicone with blade ; but, it never came to mind that I could used silicone to time over tile on exterior settings
I use this method all the time when patching and replacing broken tiles , it's quicker and no mess to clean up and I have never had any problems with tiles coming off........👍
Brilliant . I first watch tile on tile when a local superstore that was being refurbished . No tiles where taken of and it has been finished for years now and not one has fallen of wall . And if you want to change in future the second layer will be easy to take off . There is no such thing as a perfect house unless no one lives in it after it's been built.
Brilliant! I've had all the "oh., you can't tile with silicon, you nobhead" remarks myself. However, like Mr.Bugeyes a year ago said, I've tiled using silicon over 22 years ago and the tiles are still perfect, no cracks, movement or leaks. In fact, at the same time, I also made my own shower base out of 26mm hardwood ply and tiled it on a bed of silicon. That shower base is used, daily, by a family of five and it's never leaked. They think they know everything, these "£25 a square metre, mate" men!
Maybe the tile guy don't like you showing us this.. It does work !! You have save me $ 1.250.00 to just do a small place on my fireplace. I did have tile on it thank you one more time... Have a great 4th of JULY.
Thats exactly what I need to do. Put tile over my fireplace tile. This same technique applies? Just regular tile adhesive and install over existing tile?
Diane Jordan HA! HA! HA! you realise that silicone isnt heat proof! Please tell me your fireplace is only decorative! - a little knownledge is a dangerous thing...
Hi Terry, Did you prime the old tiles first as it looks like you have and if so what primer do you recommend? Great video and normally what is a messy job made much easier. Thanks Andy.
I have been waiting for such a procedure for some time now . . . At Last! This may be the lazy way out but it's certainly worth elevating the mess of removing old tiles. Is it possible to do this on kitchen or bathroom counter tops? I even thought about painting the miserable things as seen on another tutorial. So happy I waited. Look forward to hearing from you so that we can get started . . .Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
Just an observation. I was recently removing tiles and the ones that were tiled over plaster actually came off a lot more easily than the ones that were tiled over other (glazed) tiles. But all of them had been secured with tile adhesive, not silicone.
Joseph Bellino putting videos up like this misinformation makes my blood boil!!! It’s not the right thing to do and tiling over tiles is a no no especially when you don’t know the state of the substrate!!
I would like to try this silicone method as long as the surface is cleaned with TSP or a similar product to remove any oily fingerprints or dust and or debris. I would also make sure the previous surface has no voids in it and maybe scarify the previous tile surface. Also silicone doesn't break down. For the people that have thumbs down that's say that this method is just not right.. I would love to hear the reasoning behind it, not just because that's the way they were taught. New things are learned everyday. I've been tiling for 15 years it's definitely a known fact you can tile over tile but I would really like to hear some input on why this method is no good from the" pros" .I try to learn something new everyday and always keep an open ear to new tricks of the trade. Thanks in advance for your input.
This was amazing I've tiled first time in one of our bathrooms. Just 1 side full wall. This idea was amazing I will try it in the other bathroom. Tbh saved around £300 at least for the cheapest quote I had it was simple. And this method seems even better and will give it a try.
Thank you so much for this very easy guide to tiling-as a result I've managed to tile a feature wall in my kitchen! The possibilities are endless now thanks to you! 😊
Thanks Terry! I'm getting ready to retile a kitchen backsplash and was planning on going over the top of the existing tile. Someone suggested I need to sand the surface of the existing tile to have the new tiles adhere properly. It looks like using the silicon adhesive eliminates the need to rough up the surface of the existing tiles. Can you confirm that you didn't need to sand the existing tiles for this shower project? Eliminating the sanding step will save me a lot of time and mess! Thanks again Terry for sharing your experience.
Hi Karen there is no need to sand existing tiles , look at it this way when you silicon the tiles round a bath its not sanded and lasts years , good luck with your job , always here to help . Terry
Great idea!!! I'm going to do my kitchen backsplash and this is a perfect, fast and easy way to do it! Did you prepare the existing tiles in any way, other than cleaning?
Can you use this method with bathroom floor tiles and use an instant grab adhesive cartridge instead of mixing adhesive and using a trowel as this method seems to be a lot easier and saves a lot of clean up ?
Wow, silicon!! great idea, no mess. What kinda silicon did you use? I will try your method, as it is a better idea than mixing cement and all the mess. Thank You!!
Glad I watched your video... I really hope this works as I started tiling my kitchen using this method 2 days ago.. so far so good I just hope it lasts 😂
You have to take the spout off and the trim and buy the extender kit for around $25. You can do the lazy version and just tile around them but you would have to make perfect cuts so it doesn't look horrible. Spend the $25 and do it right.
how is the tile holding up after 4 years?.... i need to do a small bathroom and the professional tilers quoted me a full months pay for a 4 day job... i can't afford that i have to eat too... was considering this method and do it myself
Is there any worry of moisture getting through the new grout and subway tiles , and thus mold developing around in any gaps not siliconed on the back of the new tile? Also I think if I do it this way I might I’ll extra cautious and put down a layer of Aqua Defense or similar over the old tiles? I can’t wait to see your update ! Thanks for this video !
Fantastic mate! U R very clever & U R going to save lots of people lots of money. A simple idea, yet practical & very good. God bless U. I'm going to try that on floor tiles. Much grateful & kind regards Kadis
Very helpful, Thank You. & to my inexperienced eye - a rather fine job too. 1 question, what's the procedure for tiling Around/under the shower fittings?
Lol. Great! I don't know if I would use silicone if I was to rip out a 3 piece tub/shower, and put in a designer marble shower, but I have used silicone to stick on tile for a small backslash on a bathroom vanity, and silicone for around a huge gap around a bath tub. This was a quick fix for my inlaws old apartment building, but I would expect it to last at least 14.5 years. I even spit on my finger, and used the same white silicone as the finish grout! Should last a good long time, just clean it once in a while. Cheers!
Hello, I wanted to tile over my existing shower wall tile in bathroom with pebble tiles can you tell me the best route to take, what products to use, first time trying to do a tiling job.
Great thought Terry and I like the ease of application. I think I shall give it a go in our old bathroom thats due for renovation. I presume this was a wet area silicone?
I'm going to be making a kitchen counter top and yes Silicon is going to be my adhesive of choice. It's going to be water proof and the tiles are Not going to come off; the building will fall down first! The grout will also be Silicon although I will find the more flexible type. On this video I like the use of spacers depending on if the original wall being correct.
Hi Terry, I have some kitchen tiles I just can't live with and thanks, this is a great short-term option (planning to completely revamp in a couple of years). I was hoping to user mesh-backed mosaics but realise it won't work with this method, but can you suggest how I might be able to do that (mosaic tiles over ceramic tiles) as a stop-gap? Many thanks
+New DIYer Hi as in the video I have done one wall in mosaic tiles and done this the same way as the others so yes you can do your mosaic wall with this method Thanks Terry
I would say this technique maybe time consuming for me, admittedly im no tiler, but i did a bathroom job in one of my rented properties, first time 'Tile Over Tile' and it came out Fab! I wasn't taking any chances so I primed the old tile surface with undiluted PVA glue night before then used pre-made heavy duty tile adhesive, i was more than happy with the results and would defo recommend it :)
Well since this was my first time, i wasn't taking any chances, so i played it safe by doing the following, the end result was just to good, even a pro tiler couldn't tell ! Step 1: apply unibond PVA glue to the old tiles a day before, thick as possible. This is important for the new tiles to grab and stick. Step 2: I used plain large white tiles and stuck them in block pattern with wickes heavy duty ready made tile adhesive. Step 3: work slowly, and make sure to use spacers. Step 4: Once tile complete, wait 2 days before grouting. The good thing about tile over tile is you get a great seal between tile and your bath as the tiles sit and extra 6mm further hence no chance of silicone failing :) good luck
Mas A FOR GOD'S SAKE DONT USE PVA!!! if you insist on half-assing it use an acrylic based primer or nothing at all - PVA isnt stable in wet conditions, It softens an re-liquefies. Examples like this is exactly why people should use professionals. And if you should have some bright ideas for your gas water and electrics - DON'T! Just DON'T!
luke townley For ur information, you are so wrong! There is absolutely nothing wrong with using pva, On what basis are you condeming my idea? have you tried it? i did and its been 4 years SOLID job mate !! unlike ur stupid time consuming technic, please share more of ur time consuming technics :) :)
This is a great cost savings way to redo your bathroom over. I would not use tubes of silicone but they make sealers and primers to use first then a unmodified thinnest to adhere tile to existing tile. This all assuming you made sure the subtile is not falling off and is mostly sound if there is a small amount of mold it can be removed dried out overnight and begin in 1 day for cost of products and tile $500 maybe new bathroom. It works and yes I know many contractors love to rip out tile walls that are sound aND TUBS BUT WHY TUBS CAN BE REFINISHED AND THIS IS GREAT FOR THOSE LOOKING TO SAVE $$$.
Greetings. Did you prep the existing tiles before gluing the new tiles on? I can't tell from the video but looks like there is a coating of primer on the existing tiles. Thanks.
Hi Folavere , No I did not prep the tiles , just think about this do you prep the tile and bath before you silicon , the answer is no , I hope this is of help to you Thanks Terry
I have tiles in the inset of my fireplace, also on the hearth. Thing is i have painted these using tile paint. Do you think the silicone would work against the tile paint. The reason i need to cover this is because i have found i am allergic to the tile paint. If your method won,t work, what else do you suggest without removing the tiles?
Wow! This dude makes it look really easy. Since Indians get cheap labour so we just call someone to get this done, but I decided to DIM (do it myself) this time. I ordered the best tile on tile non-skid adhesive by Roff (great product, it’s like Fevicol for tiles). I got these really cool textured tiles I wanted for my bathroom wall. I installed the tiles myself and it wasn’t as easy as it looks but definitely worth it and kind of fun. Next time I am going to try to do other DIY things, who knows carpentry could be next.
The Area around the tap fittings in the shower how do you deal with the depth change as the tiles mean all the water fittings are that much deeper into the wall? Looking to do same in my bathroom but see this as an issue. Thanks
To all the people saying the wall would collapse due to the weight, you absolutely wrong. I used air stone on my living room wall. Airstones all though the name is a bit misleading, is way heavier than flat tile and would probably be the equivalent of putting 3 to maybe even 4 layers of flat ceramic tile on the wall. It’s been up for well over a year now and none of the stones have fallen off and my wall has yet to collapse.
I cannot thank you enough - as a pensioner I was dreading the cost and labour, but now I feel confident that my (allowed!) rate of two hours physical work a day will soon see my bathroom done. Thanks again!

Would this method work for floor tiles on floor tiles?
very interesting not thought of this before and like the idea with spacers behind tiles.
9 years old and still brilliant. Thanks 😊
Brilliant thanks, Terry....Now I am ready for my next bathroom reno! Bless you man!!
Maybe the tile guy don't like you showing us this.. It does work !! You have save me $ 1.250.00 to just do a small place on my fireplace. I did have tile on it thank you one more time... Have a great 4th of JULY.
Thank you Diane and have a great 4th of July yourself
Thats exactly what I need to do. Put tile over my fireplace tile. This same technique applies? Just regular tile adhesive and install over existing tile?
yeah i like to put my new jocks over the top of my dirty old ones it creates a seal
I stuck my new tiles underneath the old tiles, never came off and still looks great ;-)
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge! Especially about the spacers in the back of the tiles, genius!
Don’t forget to subscribe has I will be doing an 8 year update on how it Has performed and how it looks now
so, after 3 years....how is the tile holding up?
Just an observation. I was recently removing tiles and the ones that were tiled over plaster actually came off a lot more easily than the ones that were tiled over other (glazed) tiles. But all of them had been secured with tile adhesive, not silicone.
Excellent. Was looking for a vid on which adhesive to use. Going to tile over my kitchen tiles tomorrow.
Just what I’m looking to do,just need to see your photos from making a start.cheers, very helpful 👍
Thank you. Cost efficient. Do you have a video for the caulking between the tiles?
I did this method 10 years ago on a yacht shower, no tiles fell off or cracked in 10 years, please don't say it doesn't work because you are wrong.
Mr Bugeyes it’s not the correct way of tiling...if it works or it does not, it’s bullshit!
Mr yacht you should do things the right way
Joseph Bellino putting videos up like this misinformation makes my blood boil!!!

Thanks in advance for your input.
thanks for this...can you tile over tile using this method in a kitchen using wider or longer tiles?
enjoyed your video and stopped me from removing tiles in my kitchen. do you have another video where you show how to grout the tiles? thank you
Just silicone the gaps with the silicone gun.
@@BeneyGesserit lol
Brilliant!!! A task to begin next weekend!
Thank you so much Terry,Great idea.Keep up the good work, and God Bless you always.
This was amazing I've tiled first time in one of our bathrooms. Just 1 side full wall. This idea was amazing I will try it in the other bathroom. Tbh saved around £300 at least for the cheapest quote I had it was simple. And this method seems even better and will give it a try.
how is it holding up?
Very helpful in a practical no nonsense way.
Thank you so much for this very easy guide to tiling-as a result I've managed to tile a feature wall in my kitchen! The possibilities are endless now thanks to you! 😊
Good grief, I’ve been tiling over tiles for 40 yrs. No ones been injured, no walls fell down, and no one got claustrophobia from reduced living space.
Can ya just use normal tile adhesive for tile on tiles
What a great idea Terry, well done for sharing you ideas.
Terry
Did you prepare the previous tile, like sanding or cleaning them with anything?
total genius.....much thanks. saved me a bundle. now all you need is a bathroom heater.
Wow. Thank you. Now I don't feel afraid to do mine...
What is the best way to wash tiles before you apply new tiles please?
Great idea!!! I'm going to do my kitchen backsplash and this is a perfect, fast and easy way to do it! Did you prepare the existing tiles in any way, other than cleaning?
Just cleaning needed Thanks for watching
What an excellent video. Thank you very much. This will save me a fortune.
Thank You!!
Great video, brilliant tip with the spacers on the back of the tile 💥👍👍
Brilliantly helpful thanks will definitely be applying exactly the way you've shown
Enjoyed your video, am about to start thanks for the tips this will save me time and the Hassel of removing my other tiles
Hi Cheryl and good luck can you send me before and after pictures and if you need any help just ask
Thanks Terry ps where you from
Dont do it this way Cheryl its bad practice
Looks Good to me.
I'm about to spruce up my mankey old kitchen until I win the lottery and can afford a new one. This video is excellent. Fanx Tel
Glad I watched your video... I really hope this works as I started tiling my kitchen using this method 2 days ago.. so far so good I just hope it lasts 😂
Did it last
@@KL-Lady nearly 3 years later and they still on the wall I have had no problems 😄

I have a question about the plumbing fixtures. How do you tile around them? And how do you deal with depth changes?
he will tile around them. notice he didn't address this problem?
😅😅😅😅no my friend.....but you can pay a van guy instead....10 .000 pond....
Fantastic mate! U R very clever & U R going to save lots of people lots of money. A simple idea, yet practical & very good. God bless U. I'm going to try that on floor tiles.
Much grateful & kind regards

Great video - very smart to put spacers behind, as silicon will need air to cure! Without air, silicon will not cure properly and tile will fall off
does it hold? and what kind of silicon you use? Thank you sir.
Very helpful, Thank You. & to my inexperienced eye - a rather fine job too. 1 question, what's the procedure for tiling Around/under the shower fittings?
I know its been over a year but have not got round to finest the job yet , so will be doing it very soon and post a video then
Lol.
Love this! I hate thinset! This would work for tiling over a tile fireplace yeah?
Great thought Terry and I like the ease of application. I think I shall give it a go in our old bathroom thats due for renovation. I presume this was a wet area silicone?
I'm going to be making a kitchen counter top and yes Silicon is going to be my adhesive of choice. It's going to be water proof and the tiles are Not going to come off; the building will fall down first! The grout will also be Silicon although I will find the more flexible type. On this video I like the use of spacers depending on if the original wall being correct.
I know for a fact that silicon works on bathroom tiles well done my friend great little vid.
How is the tile holding up after a few years ???
Good Job Terry, very professional
Hi Terry, I have some kitchen tiles I just can't live with and thanks, this is a great short-term option (planning to completely revamp in a couple of years). I was hoping to user mesh-backed mosaics but realise it won't work with this method, but can you suggest how I might be able to do that (mosaic tiles over ceramic tiles) as a stop-gap? Many thanks
+New DIYer Hi as in the video I have done one wall in mosaic tiles and done this the same way as the others so yes you can do your mosaic wall with this method
Thanks Terry
Brilliant, thank you Terry - I hadn't appreciated they were the same, mesh-backed ones that you'd used :-)
Used this method its quick easy and permanent.
AWESOME
I would say this technique maybe time consuming for me, admittedly im no tiler, but i did a bathroom job in one of my rented properties, first time 'Tile Over Tile' and it came out Fab!
I wasn't taking any chances so I primed the old tile surface with undiluted PVA glue night before then used pre-made heavy duty tile adhesive, i was more than happy with the results and would defo recommend it :)
what's the brand of the products you've used?
Thank you. I will try it :-)
Mas A FOR GOD'S SAKE DONT USE PVA!!! if you insist on half-assing it use an acrylic based primer or nothing at all - PVA isnt stable in wet conditions, It softens an re-liquefies.
Examples like this is exactly why people should use professionals. And if you should have some bright ideas for your gas water and electrics - DON'T! Just DON'T!
luke townley
For ur information, you are so wrong! There is absolutely nothing wrong with using pva, On what basis are you condeming my idea? have you tried it?
i did and its been 4 years SOLID job mate !! unlike ur stupid time consuming technic, please share more of ur time consuming technics :) :)
Thank you for this video, it was extremely helpful. Thanks again.
most helpful like the idea about the spacers on the back of the tile, thank you for sharing.
For this size bathroom, how many tubes of silicone do you need?
Greetings. Did you prep the existing tiles before gluing the new tiles on? I can't tell from the video but looks like there is a coating of primer on the existing tiles. Thanks.
Hi Folavere , No I did not prep the tiles , just think about this do you prep the tile and bath before you silicon , the answer is no , I hope this is of help to you
Thanks Terry
Does using the silicone only work if tiling on top of another tile or, will it work if tiling on to a wall?
I have tiles in the inset of my fireplace, also on the hearth. Thing is i have painted these using tile paint. Do you think the silicone would work against the tile paint. The reason i need to cover this is because i have found i am allergic to the tile paint. If your method won,t work, what else do you suggest without removing the tiles?
This is bloody brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Lovely work.
Omg wow thank u , never thought that was possible. How do you deal with the edges though
THanx for showing how you did this. I am going to be trying this soon.
5 years ago now. How has the job held up, Terry?
Looks like a great idea.
Will give it a go.
Thanks.
Need to do an update as it still look good 11 years on
