The federal government has flagged it is looking to reform the points test for skilled migrants, which determines who gets to come to Australia, following a decision to reduce immigration numbers.
A discussion paper has been released highlighting potential changes to the points test, which would be the first update of the system since 2012.
A review of Australia's migration system, handed down in December, called for the points test to focus on characteristics associated with migrants successfully finding skilled work.
It also called for the test to provide greater certainty for prospective migrants, as well as focus more on industries with skill deficits and recognise younger people.
Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said a reformed points test would help to improve the immigration system.
"Our goal is to build a smaller, better planned, more strategic migration system that works for Australia," she said.

"We are significantly reducing migration levels, we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia's history, outside of war or pandemic."
The strategy outlined ways for migrant numbers to return to pre-COVID-19 levels, as well as halve net overseas m#491visa igration by 2025.

Thanks for the update. Aus is really clamping up on migration..unfortunately that means even less chances for off shore people..do you perhaps know when will this new point system come into effect? I submitted EOI only for 189 last year at 85 points but it does not look like that I will get an invite for 189..do you suggest that I submit an EOI for 190 as well?

Hi sir, thanks for providing the updates. I am 22 years old and have 2 years of experience as a Developer programmer, and I have also undergone skill assessment, which is positive. Now, with my PTE and NAATI scores combined with 75 points and additional 5 points from the state, the total comes to 80 points. Can I file an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a 190 visa? Additionally, with 90 points for the 491 visa, what are my chances?

Wasted an entire year and so much money for pte skill assessment and agent fees and yet nothing. Sitting with 90 points and superior english with 10experience in software engineering and now this news means less hope for Australia.
