Since it's so hard for people to understand why people buy leicas: User experience, simplicity, massive lens selection, small 1.4 lenses, small body, full frame ( i love fuji but there IS a difference in the way the sensors/lenses render an image.) the look, build quality etc. Being inspired to shoot by your camera is a very valuable thing. If you're happy with your fuji, sony, canon, nikon then thats fucking great! keep shooting, but just because something isn't up to your preferences does not make it a bad product. It's like buying a classic car, it runs slower, doesn't accelerate as fast, doesn't have aircon etc, but the experience is still so fun. Focus less on what others shoot on and just enjoy shooting.
What's to understand? You shoot Leica because you have the money for one and you like the Leica status. You shoot Fuji when you want to take photos. (And if you want full frame, you shoot Sony :) )
@@rrr43875 I cannot agree more. I like Leica but will never pay for the latest model. I have M8, M9 and will buy a M240 when the Leica collectors and ambassadors like the poster here decide to look for new Leica experience.
@@rrr43875 - there was a time where i would have agreed with you. But not now. Leica is for those who want to emulate the masters - it's a certain type of photography. Definitely next to follow for me is the Fujifilm offerings, because of what they evoke in you as a photographer.
Very thorough and very fine assessment of the M10. You reveal very important, even minute details I heard nowhere else, and you also address Leica company's own idiosyncrasies and decision making process. This is very unique review, thank you.
Here I am, years late, sold my m10 and got a mint m9p, so much happier with the files I get out of it. The shitty back screen prevented me from pinching which actually helped.
I've been using a pair of 240s for a few years and recently sold one to help fund the M10 I picked up yesterday and very excited to get it in hand and use it...
Hey Thorsten! Love the video, but you've made a small mistake: - Eye relief is the distance and alignment from the screen to your eye in which you can have a view of the full picture, it has nothing to do with eye-strain.
I have come to the conclusion that the M10 is a tiny bit heavy in weight to be comfortable. And although I love the M10, the M9 is lighter and I find myself picking it up more as a result.
Love mine. It's my first Leica and I shoot it more and more at every Wedding. It started just a few shots and now it's roughly 1/3rd of the workload for every Wedding. Love the results. The only thing that makes me slightly nervous is the lack of a back-up sd slot. That needs to happen with the next body.
I don't think a backup-SD slot is in the future of the M, because of space. You never know thought, but more likely internal memory like the Leica TL2 (that has 32GB internal memory and SD card slot).
Thorsten’s Leica reviews are definitely personable because he actually uses each Leica he reviews. Like many of us, we don't read the manuals that are accompanied with the camera, we always wing it and just want to start using the camera...photography basic is fundamental to all cameras, but Thorsten gives us a personal tour of the camera. I picked up a Leica Q, and reviewed Thorsten's review and had a better knowledge of the proper or better usage of said camera. Same with Thorsten’s review on the M240...which I picked up later on....after listening to his M10 review, am I considering picking up an M10....all my Leicas (Q, Vario-X and M240) cameras produce the same Leica image quality which is unique to Leica’s....and the reason to purchase a Leica.
i have all the fuji x100 series from the original - x100f. Last month I got a good deal on an 11 year old, 10mp Leica M8 for under $1000, just for fun and see how it goes. Now I'm selling all my Fuji and sony gears (except for my x70 because they're pocketable). The colour you can get with the sensor is sooo much better (and somehow "film" like). I can't explain why seriously. And this is the only digital camera that makes me sorta forget about my M6... Now i want an M9 for more pixels..
I have the M3 and M4.. Love them. Was looking at the M240, passed on the M9 due to the sensor corrosion issue, but even more so due to the lack of Live View. Eventually, I decided life is too short and bought a (used M10). Feels just like my M3 and M4.
My Dad bought a Leica M3 in 1964 and taught me to use it (I was 12) and I was hooked. It was years before I could afford to buy my own Leicas but I am so happy I pursued this hobby and obsession. Although I broke down and got a 240 and a 262 a few years ago, I still miss using my M6s, but that is just because I refuse to shoot Ektachrome because I am still mourning the loss of Kodachrome 25, 64, and, yes, 200. I might just get an M-10 or an M-10P after watching this. (Yeah, I have all the lenses, both M and R). I've shot many You Tube videos with my 240 using my 28mm/f2.8 or my 35mm/f2. They have that undefinable Leica look despite being only 720p. Leica really should put 1080p video in these cameras they offer with video.
Hi Thorsten! Don't know where you got the idea of Leica Q ISO 50. My Q has ISO 100 as the lowest ISO value. At least I'm not aware of any information that ISO 50 should be integrated with. According to Leica the Q sensor is almost the same as in Leica SL from the specification, but the sensors of the Leica Q and the Leica SL are not equal.
"Should I get a Leica M10? And basically when you ask that question you already know you are in too deep. So maybe the more relevant question is: should I get a black or a silver Leica M10?" I have been asking myself the first question since I got the Q2 and I hate to admit it, but the second question is indeed more relevant.
Silver, definitely. Or black, perhaps. Or maybe M10-P ... Silver, Black or Safari. ;-) (I've had all of them, M10 silver and black, M10-P silver and black, and the current I use is the M10-P Safari. That's how indecisive I've been on it).
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Haha, well it's not easy, but M10-P for sure! Black or silver is the real question. What is your experience with the weather/dust sealing on these M10's?
I have only recently added an M10 to my M9 and M8. Each camera has its charm. The M9 has beautiful colors with its CCD sensor. The M8 images can be equally beautiful. The M10 has a new sensor and it feels good in my hands. I did not like the feel of the M240 even though there really is nothing wrong with this work horse.
Great video. You convinced me to buy an M9. Luckily, one was available at the Leica Store in Vienna. Sensor had been upgraded. Super excited to shoot it.
Wow! Ive just realised you use your left eye. Is that unusual or am I unusual using my right eye? With my right eye it means the camera is shifted over away from my face so I can also incorporate my other eye if needed. Also my nose would get in the way!
Not really, it's stronger than the M240 for stills. That's the way batteries go. But the M10 does not have video, so no reason to keep a large battery really.
this video was so helpful. i have been huge leica fan and user for years. but hearing objective review from pro about these cameras gave me better understanding. i better dust off my m9 and charge the battery...
12:25 In order to make the body slimmer is the screen has to stick out. A sensor plus screen need some space. When you want the body as slim as a film camera you have to make compromises.
There is something to be said for just having fun. Everyone knows that "the image" is the important thing, not the colors in the image. Shooting with a Leica is fun, and that's what photography is all about, having fun.
A Leica M is unique, undeniably. But a XPro2 is unique to. A GH5 also. A GFX 50 R to. Etc.... So what ?? I used to have a M6 and a M240. Frankly speaking, I don't make any difference between the pictures I took with my Leica and the other cameras. I must admit that photography with a M is very pleasant. But it's also true with other cameras (and lenses) that suits me.
I agree with what you are saying about the screen not being flush and it sticking up and down, should have been inline with the rest of the back, I mean it should not have gone into the top and bottom plates, guess its less noticeable on the black chrome version but man I wish Leica would have sorted that out, they were just lazy about it, I know the M has the sensor sitting deep in the body so they stuck out the screen out at the back but the technology is there to have slider and more compact electronics. I am all for that M 3 like design, I am sure Leica will button that screen to make it appear more stealthier in the future M designs. I just ordered mine - silver M10-P knowing that I would not like that screen sticking out so much and that huge bezel all around, but hey I just could not wait any longer. I do appreciate the slimness in body design and the ISO dial, an M-D version of this beauty will be defiantly inline with the older M film cameras for sure!
One of the problems for Leica and other camera manufacturers is that screens are now being made for mobile devices mainly, and when you design a camera you have to go with what is being made. So the screen is not made for the M10 specifically, basically. If it was plane with the body, we would care less. Sure it will happen in Leica M11 or M12. Or we go without screen as in the MD10 :-)
Very clear n frank review as always .... I still own my M9 & analog MP... that's all the Leica I need and I still feel the M9 is very relevant in spite of the new launches
Hello Thorsten, I would like to buy myself a Leica camera, I have never owned a Leica camera before, so would you recommend I purchase the Leica M240 for my first Leica camera. Thank you, Thorsten.
M240 does the job and is easy to get at a good price, compared to the very popular older M9 and the more current and (or course) higher priced M10. Start there and with one lens :-)
I have just bought the Leica m246 and am not really enjoying using the SONY A7111 any more. It is just seems so big and cumbersome in comparison. So thinking of selling it and all the lenses to get an M9 or M10. I can also share lenses with the M246. My only concern is that I do enjoy wildlife photography occasionally. Not sure if the rangefinder will support this sort of photography.
Hi Thorsten. Thanks for sharing. Not long ago i bought a Leica M240. I also shoot Fujifilm and I love it. The other day I bought the Dream Lens... Canon 50 mm 0.95 with M mount. It should work with the Leica 240 but it does not. It works fine on my Fujifilm X-Pro 3 and the GFX 100 S.(with M mount adapter). Do you have the magic words...what to do?
Amazing presentation, thank you, I'm deciding if I'm buying an M240 or a film Leica like M4, M2. An advise would be greatly appreciated from any of you. I shoot street photography and people, places.
Thank you for not telling people what they should or shouldn't get and not speaking negative of other manufacturers. I like your reviews. Have you heard officially any news of an upcoming Monochrom refresh in May/June since it will be 3 yrs since the last M Typ 246? I figure if anyone knows, it would be you. I'm looking to get my first Leica (a Monochrom 246) but wondering if I should wait a few months.
Thank you. Very likely the Monochrom version of the M10 would come. Usually they do the Monochrome version after two years. That was when the product cycle was 3 years, not it's more like 4 years between new M models. I use my own M10 presets to get black and white tones from the DNG's of the M10. www.overgaard.dk/Thorsten-von-Overgaard-Gallery-Store-Presets-and-Software-for-Photography.html
Hi Thorsten - I enjoy your review. I use Light Room for all my post processing . CCD or CMOS they all look similar to me. From M240 on the chip is well-corrected for incident lights better gradation from dark to light. Enjoy shooting Leica!
I enjoyed your video very much whenever someone speaks about like a Leica ,It brings back memories when I was stationed in Germany in the late 50s and early 60s .Not too far Camp There was a camera store that had Five or six Leica cameras in the window. Every time I would probably more interest twin Len Camera.I really was hoping to see more of your images in black-and-white.Maybe next time
Dear Thorsten, many thanks for the review. I shoot with Leica M9 for years, absolutely love the colours from it, but it limits macro work. The idea is to shorten the focusing distance of Noctilux 1.0 from 1 m to say 0.5 or 0.3 m to get closeups of flowers. With M10 I can use macroadapter and Visoflex 020 to be able to do it. Question is, can I do do macro with M9 and Visoflex II or III and possibly some special macro ring like 16469/OUFRO?
Yes, macro is much easier with the EVF of the M10 and M240. The 90/4 macro kit fits on the M9 with an angle finder and all. Very cool, but not the same precision and versatility as it's only a 90mm. With EVF and a macro adapter you can make all lenses into macro on the M10
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Dear Thorsten, many thanks for your reply. If I will use M240 with Olympus EVF 2 would it be good for macro with Noctilux?
I currently have the M6 the M8 and X-Pro 2. I prefer the colors from the M8/9 sensor over the newer Leica sensors. However the M10 seems to have returned the CCD sensor look apart from the M9 appears to produce warmer reds whilst the M10 has punchier yellows. Skin tones on the M10 seem slightly warmer too. Has this been your observation also? I am considering selling all my equipment to get the M10 but not sure if I should keep my M8 and X-Pro2 until prices on the M10 come down some more. I love my M8 but I also like my fuji as a complimentary camera. I'm not interested in the other M cameras because I like the CCD look you mention, nor do I care about videos or touch screens etc etc. Is the M10 worth it?
Leica M9 for me is still the thing to go. Why? Because for me, the CCD sensor renders very unique. The m240 and the m10 looks more like the A7 in terms of rendering
Hello Thorsten, great review as always! I noticed you said the Black & white files of the M10 look a bit flat. This is very interesting: i was hoping to get the same "flatness" than the M9 Monochrom straight RAW files (with color sat to zero) and after many tests i realized that is exactly what i get. The same very workable RAW files than my beloved Monochrom M9 but half a stop brighter to my eyes. Is it something that you would say is correct? Those of the M240 were already very contrasty and did not have the magic of Monochrom 1 unless tweaked a little bit innosot processing.
I use my own M10 presets in Lightroom to convert the DNG to black and white with the M9 tonality: www.overgaard.dk/Thorsten-von-Overgaard-Gallery-Store-Presets-and-Software-for-Photography.html
Um, eye relief means the max distance from the last optical surface in which you can see the full viewing angle, not ameasure of how easy the viewfinder is on your eyes.
can you recommend online website seller because b&hphoto dont ship outside usa anymore? also which s better option 90mmf2 or 75mmf2 for outdoor Portrait (i cant buy them both or test them ) thank you mr. Overgaard
I would usually go finding smaller Leica dealers that doesn't have long waiting lists, and who offer personal service. Red Dot Cameras in UK, Leica Store Nuremberg in Germany, and so on. I really like the 90/2 APO for the details and soft look, very bright colors and all. The 75/2 is sort of a lens people seem to have forgotten. It's the "long version" of the very good 50/1.4 ASPH, and it's compact.
I'm looking for a good but affordable lens from my M262. I have narrowed it down to either the Zeiss Planar 50mm f2 or the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.5. The extra stop of light would be handy but not required. Which would you recommend?
The one that tempts you the most, but I would also look at the Leica 50mm Summicron f/2.0 Rigid (version II) from the 1960's. Affordable, real Leica and a very good lens.
I use the M10 as a weird measure of value for justifying any photography purchase decision as in: 'my entire camera system still costs less than an M10 body'. Thanks Leica.
You move your head and eye from side to side, much like how you move around in your car to see what's in the rear-view mirror. You don't think about that you can't see it all, you jut move to see and compile an idea what the full frame looks like.
I watched your video - very informative, but I am going to continue using my M8.2 for a while. Long story. Am I the only one who's waiting for the X-Pro2 review? You can't place it on the desk without saying anything about it eh Oh, and I'm pretty confident you can take good photos with any camera, it's not really about the Leica.
One of the elements that I alway loved with the Leica were their collapsable lenses. I always wonder why the Leica lenses are not collapsable, or why the Leica Q 2 is not collapsable,. In addition they should recreate a brass plating (wont affect the weight of the camera) to allow the constant use to create the beloved patina of a well used Leica!. Just a thought! David
Thanks for a great review! For now I will have to stick with my M8 until it dies. The M8 is also unique - ASP-H, first digital Leica, great B&W, thin IR layer on the sensor, 24mm frame lines, etc. Also, the M-D is also very unique with the missing screen. I do like the iso dial, but as a hobbyist, cannot justify spending the $ yet. I am not saying the price is too high, only that I can't justify it currently. Might just be me..... If you buy a camera and think it takes great photos, doesn't it still take great photos 5 years (or more) later? Heck, I just sold my Canon 20d with a broken screen a few weeks ago and I was still happy with it until the screen got damaged.
Oh man, just as I'd finally thought I found the camera I always 'needed' (being a master photographer), you now make me think Pffft, I'll wait for the M11....... I loved the way you took apart the 'design' of that rear screen and how it not only has a black border around it, but it also isn't flush (i.e. it protrudes out from the body. And those buttons.......). Love your commentary :)
I have a Leica M10 and the 50mm Noctilux f/0.95. Shooting with the Noctilux at f/0.95 it should be easy - because it has such a thin depth-of-field - to isolate individual people in a crowd. The problem I've had is not with the Noctilux but with the M10's rangefinder focusing. If people are standing close together I've found that it's very difficult to find a particular person's nose or forehead or ear to focus on. There can be too many noses or foreheads or ears in your line of sight. If you're aware of this difficulty with rangefinder cameras like the M10, I'd be grateful if you'd suggest a solution.
A lot say that the Leica is an overpriced, low tech shooter compared to the other cameras. I was one of them, until I saw some of the reviews. I myself fall in love with the Leica M system, especially the M10. However, my mind tells me to get a Sony A7R iii and I got a war in my mind. But the Leica has a special place in my heart, and it is for I to follow my heart.
Although I would never be able to afford one of these, i do have a small collection of Leica film cameras including an M3, it never ceases to amaze me how they never tried to do any radical redesign of the body This is something I rather like.
Always a joy to watch your videos, so thanks for the follow up to part 1. Regarding the sensor, now that the M10 has similar specs to the Leica Q (ISO 100-50'000) I am curious to hear your thoughts on the image quality when shooting with a 28mm Summilux.
The Q and M10 sensors are not the same. The M10 sensor has a more 'classic' look much towards the M9 in colors, but more elastic. The Q sensor is very elastic and has a more modern/digital look. In practical use I think most users would be able to gear the final look of their edited pictures to a similar look. But the point being; it's not the same sensor even both are 24MP and full-frame.
Hi. I am Ahmed from Saudi Arabia. I would like to ask you if you can recommend to me a camera Similar to Leica M 10 to Purchase . because M 10 is out of my budget and I’d like to get a camera the same specification with a less price. if you can help me I will be very thanks to you.
The Leica M9 is a great camera and generally half price or less of the M10. A classic now. You can also go M240, not as charming, but faster and more modern than the Leica M9. Here is about the Leica M9: www.overgaard.dk/leica-M9-digital-rangefinder-camera-page-19-Leica-M9-Confessions-Definitions-and-What-is-That-Details-Explained.html
"if you're asking the question which Leica, you're probably already in too deep...". Said with a wink.... and also true perhaps about even watching this video!
Thanks for the review and the humor. One question - you mention "classic" metering mode - but unless I'm missing something (which wouldn't be a first) the M10 offers only "spot" "center weighted" or "multi-field" would spot then be the M10 equivalent of "classic"? Thank you. And PS, you are 1005 right, once you start, you just want more. It's a dangerous and slippery slope :-)
The Classic mode is where the three small eyes inside the bayonet measures the reflections from the white/grey stripes on the shutter curtain. In that mode, there is only one metering type, which is an oval approximately 1/3 of the frame in the center (center-weighted). In Advanced Mode, the shutter goes up and the metering is performed by the sensor image: In that mode you have spot, center-weighted and matrix. I generally prefer and recommend Classic mode so you don't have to use the sensor and battery; and further you don't have to listen to the shutter going up and down.
yes. I mentioned the book because it made me aware of Leica. Vishniac basically was a street photographer, in the 30s, he wanted to go unnoticed. I am pretty sure he wanted to travel light as well. the pictures are amazing.
Hi, first I love your reviews, I was wondering what about printing? How do Leica’s cameras perform for large prints? Also I’ve never had a Leica before, I am hesitant between the Leica Q and the Leica M10 (which I fell in love with as soon as I hold it in my hand), if u equipped the M10 with that 28mm would both camera deliver the same quality? Thank you
In large prints the quality of micro details should be quite visible. Quality meaning that the details are captured solely with excellence of optics and not manipulated digitally. My experience is that the 28/1.7 on the Leica Q and the 28/1.4 on the Leica M perform almost similar. The reason the 28/1.4 cost more than the whole Leica Q with lens is that it's pure optics with no shortcuts, whereas the Leica Q is 1) mass produced and not hand-assembled, and 2) is a compact lens with a digital profile that correct mainly the corners and straighten out the picture. In theory the Q should have less details in the corners, but it's actually hard to see in real life. For me, the main difference between the Leica Q and the 28/1.4 is the feeling of using the equipment. For that reason I prefer the 28/1.4 on a Leica M because it feels more like creating a picture. I can laugh at myself and I can look at the images and see they perform similar; but I will still pick the Leica M with the 28/1.4 any day for that feeling.
I find the Leica M best for me, because I use M lenses. The SL has great EVF, great feeling and all, but as I only use M lenses, I decided there was no reason to have a SL body for that (when I like the M bodies so much).
I've got an M240, it's a great pleasure using the camera for sure. But there's a big big disappointing issue and that is its horrible high ISO capability. Simply you can't go above ISO1000 (one thousand) if you care about the colors and noise. I took some photos with my Nikon D200 and the image came out better than the M240! I think if you want a good Leica M series just directly go for M10, believe me it'll save a lot of your money.
I would love to own a Leica, but there's literally over a year's worth of my rent on that desktop. Not saying they're necessarily over priced, just not within a grad student's budget. Some day.
On lens recommendation, I usually say this: 1) Most people will use one lens for 95% of what they do. There are many nice lenses, and you want more than one (and that is fine), even you could do with just one. For Leica people tend to get 2-3 lenses as their "kit" whereas a dSLR often invites to get as much of the range from 8mm to 800mm. (You see that photo in the Nikon brochure of all the lenses on a table and you automatically dream of having them all!) 2) Most people will use a 50mm or 35mm as their standard lens. Few choose 28mm or 75mm or something else than 35mm/50mm. So first thing is to decide if you are 35mm or 50mm. 3) Next thing is to decide if you can do with a f/2.0 lens; and they are all excellent and enough. As Leica users tend to be people who dream of the most excellent, the idea of NOT getting the most exotic and excellent consructed lens, the f/1.4 (or 0.95 Noctilux) make them sleepless. So if you consider a f/2.0 lens for economy, but really dream of the f/1.4, you'll stay sleepless til you actually get the one you dreamt of. Having said that, the 50mm Rigid from 1970's you can get for $600-$1000 and it is excellent. In many ways it is comparable with the $7,000 APO-Summicron 50mm. The 35mm ASPH f/2.0 is a GREAT lens, compact too. The 35mm f/1.4 FLE ASPH is a masterpiece ($4,000), and so is the 50mm Summicron ASPH ($4,500). 4) Some times people consider economizing ont he lens and get another brand as their starter lens. I consider the lens the most important, so I would rather go with any cheap second-hand Leica lens than a new other brand.
Thanku very much that was so helpful and eye opening , i am a photographer my self and want to change my Canon equipment for Leica. I really like your videos thanks for making them .
Yes, you are right. The sensor is covered by the shutter curtain. Even it is "mirrorless" it has a shutter curtain that covers the sensor till the moment of exposure.
Leica M9 and Leica M10 are very similar. It's almost that once you got an M10, you discover how cool the Leica M9 is. I am lucky that I got the Leica M9 when it came out, and then the next M240, then the M240 so I got to experience them all from new. So traveling the route of M9 and get an M10 or M11 later is not a bad idea.
Dear Thorsten I’m from Mexico, I really enjoy your videos and your advices. On the other hand. I will buy my first Leica camera. I’m not a professional, nevertheless I would spend a lot of money on it. So, which Leica camera do you recommend to me. Thank you and regards.
That's what I do. I don't consider it expensive or a lot of money. I'm only grateful I don't do movies, because then it would be 100,000's instead of 1000's .

The ISO dial is one of the reasons I've always liked Fuji cameras. Dials for everything.
Thorsten. You’re killing it. Never stop the series!
I used leica &nikon 50+years as Amateur,leica is the pioneer of 35mm camera&traditions continue now a days !
Omg that is a true soul catcher. I havent seen anything like that in any camera before, only Leicas can do that. Love it!
:-)
Man your talks are so inspiring! Glad I discovered your videos and your website, I have learned so much about photography!
I'd take an internal memory just for JPGs or something like that. But I think they have to do something.
You are doomed ;-)
Nobody has to explain why they like something better. It it works for you, it works.
I recently sold my m240 now kicking myself for it. but the other issue I have is, get an M10 , M9 or another M240..
Thanks, Dominique
"Should I get a Leica M10? And basically when you ask that question you already know you are in too deep. So maybe the more relevant question is: should I get a black or a silver Leica M10?" I have been asking myself the first question since I got the Q2 and I hate to admit it, but the second question is indeed more relevant.
Silver, definitely. Or black, perhaps.
Or maybe M10-P ... Silver, Black or Safari.
;-)
(I've had all of them, M10 silver and black, M10-P silver and black, and the current I use is the M10-P Safari. That's how indecisive I've been on it).
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Haha, well it's not easy, but M10-P for sure! Black or silver is the real question. What is your experience with the weather/dust sealing on these M10's?
and your third question is when to buy. same here for me.
"It is a very interesting thing with Leica that, when you want a new Leica, you basically want old Leicas ..."That is so true in so many cases! 😂👍
I honestly love the look of the m240. It's got better noise structure and it's sharper with more of a 3d pop.
Great video, Thorsten- I really appreciated it (especially as a proud M9 owner)!
Dude is just mad because they killed him in Die Hard, now he tries to show off his camera collection ;)
Ha ha :-)
Dodo is just envious because he has not Leicas to work with...!!!
Mind your gallblader...it might burst out of so much bilious "humour"!!!
U WRONG !!!
:D :D :D You should try Leica!!!
The battery is smaller which is a nice thing?? maybe worth mentioning the drawback with that?
Not really, it's stronger than the M240 for stills. That's the way batteries go. But the M10 does not have video, so no reason to keep a large battery really.
this video was so helpful. i have been huge leica fan and user for years. but hearing objective review from pro about these cameras gave me better understanding. i better dust off my m9 and charge the battery...
Thank you!
12:25 In order to make the body slimmer is the screen has to stick out.
A sensor plus screen need some space. When you want the body as slim as
a film camera you have to make compromises.
Thank you!
Just picked up an m9-p. Excited!
For the b&w video, I think a filter - yellow or orange used, for skin tone?
@@alexanderkrasotkin7441 Yes, the Olympus EVF is same quality
thx u for the wider picture about Leica! What camera and lens are you using to create this video? Thx u
Would you say that then the optimum iso for the Leica M 262 would be 400 too?
i'm listening to each and every word
Leica M9 for me is still the thing to go. Why? Because for me, the CCD sensor renders very unique. The m240 and the m10 looks more like the A7 in terms of rendering
Do I detect a large helping of "sour grapes", green eye etc in many of these comments?
I've read long dissertations on it online to understand it. Don't ruin it for me :-) I hold onto the word "relief" and tell myself I can feel it.
can you recommend online website seller because b&hphoto dont ship outside usa anymore?
also which s better option 90mmf2 or 75mmf2 for outdoor Portrait (i cant buy them both or test them )
thank you mr.
That works. I justify that my entire camera collection cost less than a yacht.
LOL !! Best answer !!
Magic Of Light brilliant lol
Yeah, and my entire Leica collection costs less than my flat....
Maybe, but not for long !
Hello, as a glasses user. How can you manage with 28 mm lens ? Because I cannot see the frame line. Best regards.
You move your head and eye from side to side, much like how you move around in your car to see what's in the rear-view mirror. You don't think about that you can't see it all, you jut move to see and compile an idea what the full frame looks like.
I wish M9s were still $2-2.5k. With the sensor corrosion issues, versions with clean or replaced sensors are over $4k now...
Dear Thorsten, besides the tech: Is your glasses one from Kilsgaard from Denmark? I like the one youre wearing very much - simple and decent.
Leica M typ262 preferred - as you say Thor, if you get a new Leica basically you want an old Leica. Enough said!
So the M10 doest have the abiliy to WYSIWYG before capturing the image like the Fuji's do or does it?
With the EVF (or on the screen)
I watched your video - very informative, but I am going to continue using my M8.2 for a while. Long story. I am very pleased with the M8.2, and it helps that I can do infrared photography which I've always been interested in.

Great hack Thorston, setting iso m to 10,000, giving you effectively an extra iso value on the dial! Thanks man! (And I don’t even have a Leica!)
Am I the only one who's waiting for the X-Pro2 review? You can't place it on the desk without saying anything about it eh
Oh, and I'm pretty confident you can take good photos with any camera, it's not really about the Leica.
If you do other reviews of the M10, I think you should discuss the different things an M10 owner can do to conserve battery life.
David
Love the rendering on the M9-P. Don’t like it’s winder noise. Wish it was like the M10. I wanted to get black. But silver wins every time.
The M10 looks particular nice in silver.
20D is still good in a daylight :)
Regards
Pick a center of interest; the person who should be in focus.
Thanks so much for sharing your insights. More videos please!
Thank you. More are coming!
Bit like Porsche 911 ?? (I don't currently own either).
So would that mean that the M10 equivalent to "classic" is "center-weighted"?
it's unique cos of its price tag. Leica has a unique history. Roman Vishniac: A Vanished World. Leica and Rolleiflex.
Don't know about the price tag. You hold a Leica and you feel attached to it, or you don't. It's very simple I think.
Do Leica cameras have AE lock buttons?
When you hold the shutter release half down, it lock the exposure.
would love to see a review of the M10-D
Very nice review! I am thinking about buying Leica SL, what do you think if i put Leica M Lens on the SL body?
Photographing,and teasing photography 👍
I would love to own a Leica, but there's literally over a year's worth of my rent on that desktop. Not saying they're necessarily over priced, just not within a grad student's budget. Some day.
Get a Leica IIIa from 1935.
Great review and production. What a great photographer!
Thank you!
hello very good video thanku ! what lens would you recommed to buy first
On lens recommendation, I usually say this:
1) Most people will use one lens for 95% of what they do. There are many nice lenses, and you want more than one (and that is fine), even you could do with just one. For Leica people tend to get 2-3 lenses as their "kit" whereas a dSLR often invites to get as much of the range from 8mm to 800mm. (You see that photo in the Nikon brochure of all the lenses on a table and you automatically dream of having them all!)
2) Most people will use a 50mm or 35mm as their standard lens.
Welcome!
My pleasure!
Classic Leica exposure measurement in center based not spot. so i guess the sensor is not exposed in that metering mode right ?
Yes, you are right. The sensor is covered by the shutter curtain. Even it is "mirrorless" it has a shutter curtain that covers the sensor till the moment of exposure.
What size and type do sd card would you recommend for someone who will purchase a Leica Q?
128GB in 300x speed or more.
I’ve been waiting for this video, thank you so much!
Welcome!
BTW, soon Kodak Ektar will be back and then you really will be able to see ‘film’ for real. Happy shooting
You can see film for real without ektar lol
To know M10 you have to know m9,m240 and m3 or m4 film M series camera etc...they are different evolutionary cameras !!!
If you don't know m series leica, don't look at this review !!!
Now decision is to go for M9 as entry to Liecia or stretch to M10... but thanks for these great videos. Now need to make a decision
Thank you!
hi Thorsten, I'm wondering, how can you afford all these bodies? It might sound too personal question but I'd like to have some insight in that regard
That's what I do. I don't consider it expensive or a lot of money. I'm only grateful I don't do movies, because then it would be 100,000's instead of 1000's .
Sold my M10 cuz for me, it didn’t do anything that my 240 cannot. Kept my 240 safari and titanium tho. Luv those cameras!
Yes, the M240 has proven to work. The M10 is a new one you have to get used to. I decided to use two M10's and have semi-retired the M240.
Magic Of Light I will gladly take that m240 off your hands, Im having withdrawal after only shooting film with my M6 for a little while haha.
Ha ah, you are infected. I can tell. Just a matter of time :-)
I sold my spare M240 and only kept the original black one, just as I kept my original black M9. Sentimental reasons.
The best advice in the video is "to close the eyes and chose any of them and you will not make wrong choice"
