I DANCED AWAY THE NIGHTS DURING THE WAR TO THIS MUSIC AND THESE SONGS. I WILL CELEBRATE MY 94TH BIRTHDAY IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. THE BRITISH BANDS WERE SO PRECISE AND EASY TO DANCE TO. THEY NEVER MISSED A BEAT. MET MY HUSBAND IN 1941 WHEN HE ASKED ME TO DANCE. WE WILL CELEBRATE OUR 74TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN SEPTEMBER . MANY HAPPY MEMORIES OF "OUR SONG" WHICH WAS THAT LOVELY SLOW FOXTROT - "FALLING LEAVES". I NOW LIVE IN CANADA BUT WILL NEVER FORGET THAT LITTLE BALLROOM IN DERBY ENGLAND CALLED THE RIALTO. THE SIGNATURE TUNE OF THE BAND THAT PLAYED THERE WAS "MOONLIGHT AND ROSES". MY DEAR FRIEND BETTY HAD THIS PLAYED AT HER WEDDING - AFTER ALL THESE YEARS WE ARE STILL IN TOUCH AND REMEMBER THOSE HAPPY DAYS WE SPENT CARRYING OUR GAS MASKS & "TIN" HATS EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT SOMETIMES WITH THE ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS FIRING AWAY. IF WE EVER HAD TO MISS THE DANCE IT WAS A MAJOR CATASTROPHE...LOL... GOD BLESS ENGLAND.
Lovely memories for you amongst the difficult war years. You really can't beat a lovely 'dance hall' and the music that goes with it - I was at Blackpool's Tower Ballroom recently and it always gives me goosebumps!
BLACKPOOL WAS ALWAYS THE WORKING MAN'S HOLIDAY RESORT - THE LARGE FIRMS HAD THEIR HOLIDAY WEEK AT THE SAME TIME AND CLOSED THE FACTORIES DOWN COMPLETELY.. PEOPLE WHO COULD AFFORD IT THEN MADE A BEE-LINE TO BLACKPOOL.. IT WAS MORE LIKE HOME FROM HOME THAT WEEK AS YOU COULDN'T WALK 10 YARDS WITHOUT MEETING SOMEONE FROM YOUR WORKPLACE. HAPPY MEMORIES - ONE OF THE BEST FOOTBALL PLAYERS (SOCCER) - LIVED THERE AND WE STAYED AT HIS SMALL HOTEL ONE YEAR WHEN ON HOLIDAY. I REFER TO SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS. STAN'S TEAM WAS OF COURSE BLACKPOOL -AFTER THE WAR ENDED, MY HUSBAND ALSO BECAME A PRO. SOCCER PLAYER FOR DERBY COUNTY F.C. AND PLAYED MANY TIMES AGAINST SIR STAN. THEY BOTH WERE CHOSEN FOR THE ENGLAND TEAM TO TOUR CANADA FOR 6 WEEKS IN 1950. FIVE YEARS LATER WE LEFT ENGLAND FOR A LIFE IN CANADA AND HAVE LIVED IN BEAUTIFUL BRITISH COLUMBIA FOR MANY YEARS. I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR "GOOSEBUMPS" WHEN I THINK OF THAT HUGE ORGAN PLAYING IN THE TOWER BALLROOM------ I GET THEM TOO. LOL. .@@PastPerfectVintageMusic
When courting, my parents would go to the ballroom at Blackpool most weekends, and we holidayed there plenty. The ballroom is still wonderful - but the Tower and environs are pretty grim. Not cared for and preserved as it all should be. I've enjoyed reading your memories, and lucky you in such a beautiful place as B.C. - you made a good choice!. Thank you :-)
I still have a CD set, "The Great British Dance Bands". Every New Year's Eve, my late husband and I used to put the CD's on, roll up the carpet and dance! This music brings me to a lovely world; I think of ballrooms with potted ferns in the corners, everybody in formal attire, and a moonlit patio or balcony.
Back then, many bad things were going on-yes! But what has been lost now is music that was easy to listen to, a song that has a poetical form to it, and songs that deliver a message. This is what is missing today, and needs to be brought back.
@@Sheena1234ization True, but it was even more socially acceptable to be racist, sexist, homo/transphobic, etc. than it even is now... as hard as it is to believe sometimes.
The Yank writing these words is fascinated with the great British dance bands of this era. I adore the crisp bouncing rhythms, elegant arrangements, and straight-forwards approach of these dance bands. I can just image dressing in White Tie and Tails and dancing the evening away at the Mayfair Hotel, Kit Kat Club, or the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Delightful! "Lady Jane, may I have this dance?"
Who are you referring to when you said "The Yank", Richard? Whatever nationality we are, we can enjoy this dreamy music because it's unlikely we'll see its equivalent again - sadly.
This music is so lighthearted. Of course it was dance music, and the fox-trot was in fashion. The happiness that this music evokes is so alien to the feelings one has when listening to today's pop!!!
Great to hear the voice of Sam Browne with Ambrose and his Orchestra. Next to Al Bowlly, in my view, he was the best band singer. Such clear diction and so easy to listen to.
Many thanks for putting this up. Born in 1958, I must be one of the youngsters here, but I like a good tune, regardless of its age. I shall definitely be buying the CD-keep up the good work!

Happy times! Sure! When women were not allowed to study or have a career, discrimination was rampant, women were fired when pregnant, the KKK was very active, extreme poverty all over, you went to college only if you could afford it, you could not marry across religious lines, the colonies were still ruled with an iron hand, the church still had its fat fingers in all aspects of life, you simply died of cancer, tuberculosis was common and deadly, homosexuals went to jail or worse, misery in the working class areas, no pension schemes, extreme unemployment in the interbellum, no welfare, no unemployment pay, strong class distinctions...etc.etc...sure...happy times! Aren't you confusing your misplaced romantic feelings of the past (with, I must admit much better music..) with the (f)actual circumstances of those days?...
