  • For today's ride I met up with Duluth locals Randy and Andrew, who took me down some of the trails on the Nimbly Cluster at Piedmont, in Duluth, MN. Joining us later in the ride was Kim and his dog Ozzie. Kim works on the trail crew at Piedmont as a member of COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores), and Ozzie is a schnauzer who is a very good boy, and a seasoned trail dog.
I've heard a lot about DM and BOB (Bones of the Beast), and understand they are some of the most technical downhill trails in the State (outside of a bike park), and have wanted to ride them for a few years now. Today we tackled them each, along with Dr. Diablo, as well as some other trails that didn't make the video (Mejumpolis and Rickety Cricket).
DM and BOB were intimidating for sure, everything is much bigger and steeper in person. Thanks to Randy and Andrew for pre-riding these trails with me, showing me the right lines, and towing me in to all the tricky sections. The full run on each of these trails went great - now I can't wait to get back to the Nimby Cluster to ride these trails again!

Yeah Buddy! Nice Work! Those trails are no Joke! I still need to do exactly this. Spend the day to find the right lines. Awesome that the local boys took the time to guide you through! Easier every time! Woot!

Putting the down in downcountry in this one, way to check off the gnarly trails in Piedmont's NIMBY Cluster on just 120 mm of suspension travel!! The GoPro effect is so real here, these trails have to be seen in person to know just how steep and technical they can get. That was quite the blind send on the ending rock roll of Dr. Diablo! 📐🪨

I thought I was going OTB on that one. I got up there and as I got closer to the edge it kept getting steeper and steeper. 😳 I have a new appreciation for Piedmont now after riding these trails. I always liked it but now I have basically a new trail system to ride, and man are they fun!!! Hope to ride these trails with you sometime soon!

Holly cow Rob! You were pushing the limits here! Sick vid, It really encapsulated the reality and challenge of these trails.. you had a great team showing you these trails too. The big rock roll had me on the seat of my pants. I didn’t do that line until last year! Duluth is amazing!

That roll is crazy! I’m amped to ride DM and BOB again, but that roll on Diablo would take a little self-motivation I think. Duluth is such a gem. I wish I was closer, but am so grateful that it’s as close as it is!

Great work Rob! These trails take no prisoners. Crazy you did it on that bike and made it look smooth! Gnarliest trails in that area🤘

Thanks man! Really enjoyed these trails, makes me want a little beefier bike for sure, but the Tallboy has been surprisingly capable. It served me well in Moab a few years back, and that’s chunky stuff as you know. Can’t wait to ride these Nimby trails again!

Great video,Rob. Cool to see you do it on the Tallboy too. Did you ride any blue trails in the area? Curious how those were for you? Planning a first time bike trip out there this summer and would like to come back home alive. 😬

Thanks! I definitely recommend Home Brew, it’s such an awesome trail. Blue rated, naturally technical with a lot of slabs that make up a lot of the trail. That along with Lollygagger down back to the Haines Road trailhead are top notch. I’m planning Home Brew for the next video.

Good Job! There was some high consequence sections and you did great. Tons of stuff like this where I live but sharper more janky rock. Surgery is free in Canada but not the best use of my time. Stay safe out there.

Thanks man! Free surgery, amazing. It’ll cost you an arm and a leg in the states.

Wow, gnarly stuff! When I met you at Bertram I had that light blue Roscoe you saw. Just placed my order for a Trek Top Fuel 9.7 and i'm very excited to keep progressing my skills. Love watching someone more competent than me ride trails I have access to!

That’s awesome! I think you will like that bike, and you’ll definitely be able to take on more technical trails with that. One thing is always true for mountain biking: no matter how good you get, there will always be someone more competent riding the trails! Thanks for watching Nick!

Great video, Rob! You gave a true look at how gnarly those trails can be. You rocked it, man! I’m glad Andrew and I could assist you with DM, BoB and Dr. Diablo’s huge rock roll. What a fun day that was riding with you and Andrew and having a few brews at Bent Paddle afterwards.

I live in Duluth and Piedmont still sketches me out 😬 I ride a hard tail and prefer Duluth’s fast and flowy trails with some tech. Home brew is fun if I’m feeling rowdy 🤘🏻

I love Home Brew! I actually rode that this same day, plan to post a vid of that this Friday. Where are your favorite flow trails in Duluth? I’ve done Mission Creek and really like those trails.

@@robonbikes all the trails in Mission Creek are amazing. Definitely my go to for local trails. Enger is fun too!
The CAMBA/Telemark trails in Cable WI are perfect in what I look for in trails! They are fast, flowy, and fun tech! Only a little over a hour from Duluth and can easily make it there for a full day of riding and back home

I need to get back to CAMBA, been there once and it was fairly damp but the trails were awesome! I love Enger! And Craft Connector! Thanks for watching!
