I was always taught "start ON (the wood), stop OFF (the wood)". And let the paper do the work.

Do you have any thoughts as to why the instructions that came with my Makita B05030 actually comes with a warning caution as follows: "Never switch on the tool when it is in contact with the workpiece. It may cause an injury to the operator." The instructions also say "Turn the tool on and wait until it attains full speed. Then gently place the tool on the workpiece surface"
