For warmth: dress in layers down to your socks and wear a winter hat gloves coat and snow pants if needed and wear boots/shoes/slippers and wrap up in blankets
Eat shelf stable foods that don't need to be heated/refrigerated (p.b. sandwiches etc.)

For real, 7months without power and internet for me when hurricane maria passed - many people had it worse, but hey hope texas recovers ofc just - what's a big deal for some people has been 10 times worse for others in another part of the world and it's worth recognizing that, it humbles you and makes you appreciate blessings more - it can always be worse. For me the shocking thing is just history has been made, but the whole complaining over hours heck even days without power hurts my soul as someone who experienced a blackout for almost a year.

Living where it is currently -30 without wind chill, normal winter temps, and working in construction for last couple decades. If you own your house I highly recommend returning to it and pouring pink antifreeze down every drain, toilets and back of toilets, shutting water off, opening every faucet and draining what you can. Water damage is a nightmare, especially right now with over priced and limited building supplies. If there is a basement where water heater is usually you can drain bulk of system easily out of it using lower valve.
Edit: If anyone reads and utilizes this advice, don't forget to turn water heater breaker off if electric to save heating elements when power comes back on.

USA also has very cold parts. Climate change has been happening since it existed. The rate of climate change decides how many species can adapt and how many will go extinct. If it changes too much too fast, then almost everybody will be dead. If it changes very slowly, then most species will be able to evolve.
Some species are more sensitive to changes while some can survive variations as large as 100C and from desert to tropical humidity. For example, some plants grow at a specific, temperature, altitude, and humidity. Like asafoetida, saffron, cocoa, etc. Some orchids can't even survive a 0.5C change in temperature. If climate changes too fast, then it will threaten food and water security and it can scale down human civilization back to thousands of years with most of the people dead.

The difference the houses are not built for that in the south as we rarely get winter weather. In the last 45 years in louisiana i think it has snowed maybe 9 or 10 times, 1 year had 2 of those times, and about 10 years ago another 2, and about 2 years ago 3 times in same year, the rest were singles which were like 2 or 3 separate years. Our states and local gov have none of the equipment for the roads for winter storms like that, Pipes and faucets are always a problem when it freezes, as faucets up north in places that freeze regularly have the valves in the wall not outside the house, so if a faucet isnt covered in the south in a hard freeze it will burst. Houses off the ground dont have insulated pipes usually, and often they burst. and usually if it does snow and freeze here, it was usually mixed with rain and so roads are solid ice not snow.

We had to melt the ice down with propane heaters to make drinking water, my grandma would boil the potatoes we had to make stew, we used candles for light and lucky we had a fireplace that we kept chocked with wood. It was a very hard time but we made it and I learned something that I will never, ever forget-people may lose their electricity but they never lose their power.

The state is huge and therefore, it could be snowing in one part of the state and sunny and warm in another part.

here in southern ohio, in the last week there has been 20" of snow!!!!. what makes it bad is when there is no snow removal equipment to get rid of it, and heating systems that was not sized to deal with the cold temperatures.!!!!. the real reason why I am leaving a comment, you mentioned "SELENA" I remember her and what happened to her. I could only think what she would have become had she not have been shot and killed. that one event shut everything "OFF"( silenced the band). I was one of those people who tried to get keepsakes from their "FAN CLUB" and got nothing back. when I watched the movie I realised what happened!!!!
