  • This is a short overview concerning the basic functions of a TASCAM MSR 24-S multitrack tape recorder, uploaded due to my ebay offer (April 2014). I recorded a music stereo signal to all 24 tracks (left channel to 12 tracks - 1, 3, 5, etc., right channel to 12 tracks - 2, 4, 6, etc.).
    Introduced in 1990, this tape machine is extremely reliable, operates very quiet, is easy to use and requires little maintenance only. The analog sound reproduction is much more convincing than any digital recording - of course. Thanks for interest!

    Definitely a beautiful machine. I do have the MSR-16, which I think sounds really good, too. I know some people have given them bad reviews, but I got mine really cheap and repaired it myself. The recordings just jump out at me, as far as I'm concerned. For fun, I recorded something directly into audacity and multi tracked, and I did a separate session with tape of the same song and multi tracked with the same instruments. The tape wins for sure!!! To me the sound is pure. I know it's only 1/2 inch of tape on 16 tracks, but it works flawlessly.

      You should not hear what other people say about thay "smal" recorder!, some have only that "high end" thinking!, that meen thay meen only the best from the best is Professional! But that is not truth! Thats stupid thinking! It would be the same as if one say to you "you can ONLY hear music on a 30.000€/$ sterio unit (consumer - at home not studio) in a room who was made a perfect Acoustic (approx 2000 - 15.000€/$), and you sit in the sweetspot! Thats high end stupides!!! ...tascam taperecorder can you find worldwide in pro studios, protcast and Movie studios! The big one (like starwars and the tascam 80 8 recorder) tascam and studer stand in so many studios side by side!!! And both were used !!!!!! ...thats the truth!

    Be warned, I own a MSR 24 and originally it was a Dolby S machine. The capacitors leak on the Dolby S circuit boards and can be really hard to replace as they are surface mount and there are so many on each board. It's not impossible to fix the problem but it's expensive and would take a highly skilled electronics engineer with the right equipment. I mangaged to purchase the DBX boards out of an older machine and they just slot in and it works fine as a DBX machine now. :)

    • @tomdevices
      @tomdevices  10 років тому

      Hi Mark - you're right of course - leaking capacitors are a general problem with devices older than 25 years - and there's nothing much you can do, except replace them with new ones … thanks for comment!

      Hi Tom, when I had the problem with my machine I researched the audio forums online and found that it was a actually down to to TEAC putting cheaper capacitors on the Dolby S boards to cut back on production cost as this was a machine that was aimed at what they called a semi pro market at the time. They could have put better ones on that would have lasted but that would have put the cost up! If you ever start getting any pops, crackles and funny noises it's worth looking at those boards, it happened to me! Thanks from someone who is interested in these machines! :)

    TASCAM MSR 24S Short Overview

  • @charlesfick729
    @charlesfick729 6 років тому

    I didn't used my MSR 16 for a year, about three months ago I demagnetized all my machines. Tonight I was going to multitrack three tracks for an acoustic duo recording. It looked like it was recording but when I played it back there was no recording hence no signal on the meters. I played back an older 16 track recording of my old band and it went through and I was able to re mix. Looks like something went wrong in the record head or circuit board, either way I know it'll be a small fortune to have it fixed plus running it all the way down to Jersey to get it fixed, or Phillie.
    Here's the pisser, I have a like new BR20 so I did a mix with acoustic and three vocals. It was pretty good But the girl I recorded with mentioned I played it still a little fast so I said lets see how it sounds if I slow it down a hair. I put it on variable speed to slow it down and something happened to that too. I put it back on fixed speed and it plays too fast, nothing helped. What a night, Two machines to go down the same night just sucks!!! When I put it on variable, it won't go slow enough to play at a normal speed, I lowered the tape speed to see if I could speed it up to par but it wouldn't go fast enough.....I give up.

    grrrrrreat video and nice music , I enjoyed the whole thing...and proud to be a new owner....but mine is without the S...only msr24....u know whats the difference?

    • @tomdevices
      @tomdevices  10 років тому

      Hi David - thanks for comment! The difference: The Tascam MSR 24 S is equipped with the Dolby-S noise reduction system, which is - compared to the DBX noise reduction system of the older machines - more efficient and and sounds very neutral; the DBX tends to "pump", i.e. (unwanted) compression effects are clearly noticeable.

    • @tapewolf
      @tapewolf 9 років тому +2

      +David Vebaixa The MSR-24 uses DBX noise reduction instead of Dolby S. The Dolby S is supposed to sound better but has a problem that the ICs tend to fail. So the non-S version is likely to be more reliable.

    What sounds better, dbx or dolby ?

    • @tomdevices
      @tomdevices  4 роки тому +1

      The Dolby-S sounds neutral - the dbx does not, but: unfortunately Tascam bought the dolby units from a different manufactor who used electrolytic capacitors of minor quality. This leads to malfunctions after a working period between 25+ years - one of the reasons, why I sold my beloved Tascam, had issues on three tracks ... thanks for interest David!

      @@tomdevices At the same time... Do you really want a reel tape recorder to sound neutral??? I mean, if you want to sound neutral, go for a DAW with Apogee or Prism converters...
      I had an opportunity to get a 100% OK MSR-24/dBx and it absolutely sounds great... Maybe is it because I long used a Yamaha MT-3X with dBx in my young days so I feel good with the kind of colour you get from it, let's say that it's a really nice highly likeable ear-candy I'm OK with, as well as using tape saturation on some stuff... Moreover, it's easy to sync it with a DAW with the MTS-30 that can be obtained for cheap...
      Actually, I even had surprises with 4 tracks K7 at 9.5cm/s with dBx when I found my old demos in a crate... Had to borrow a still working MT-3X from a friend then... It was the first time I heard these demos thru serious monitoring+console (Dynaudio and Amek Big-series) and my reaction was... WOW! For sure, 4 tracks and K7 have serious limitations, but the sound was so in your face, so warm, so alive that... That was the event that made me decide to go for a reel tape recorder, I first considered to get a 8 tracker, maybe a 16 tracker and sync it with the DAW, but as a MSR-24 in a mint state showed up with a good dozen of tapes for a very nice price, I took the jump... And I love it...
      BTW, you can absolutely neither use the dBx, nor the Dolby-S which is a consumer-oriented Dolby... The professional version is Dolby-SR and was available as independent external racks, IIRC, even as sub-modules? I think you could have 4 modules in an 1U rack and use as well as Dolby-SR, as the Dolby-A which was also the "pro" thing while consumer electronics had dolby-B and dolby-C...
