great video! 😀 really pumped to record our next album on our 8track Fostex A8
omg epic god i love 60s rock i was born 11 years to late! very nice music and recording.
Good job, keep up the good work.. Peace Fam.. K.N. 2023
From one analog enthusiast to another, I've been finding myself craving your next videos! Your workflow is well thought out, your explanations of your creative process are quite articulate, and you utilize the limitations of the analog domain gracefully yielding fantastic results. That, as well as being a great musician! Thanks for posting Andy!
Thanks so much Henry! This one went particularly well aside from running out of tracks towards the end, which I hadn't planned for as I didn't plan to phisically record the vocal delay effect to the tape, but blending it live wasnt quite working :)
Thanks!
Awesome Recording, and techniques 👍🙏❤️☯️
Thanks!
I broke my better laptop late last year so i have been working now on my new album doing bounce mixing in Fl Studio
This is so inspirational for me I dig it. I have an old TEAC 3340 four track and a tascam 16 track desk that I want to record with. Now is a good time to start. Love your song and that 60s sound your getting.
Thanks so much Bryan! Yes you've got some nice gear there go make some tunes!
Amazing production Andy, the final mix is really rich and full of lovely details. Particularly enjoying some of your vocal harmonies and the quality of the rhythm track (lush cymbals). Inspiring stuff for us analog buffs. 👌
Agree the backing vox coming out of the middle 8 sound ace, plus dialing in the extra echo on the hangxiety tag is a hook that pops nicely. And yes the amount of stereo detail is fabulous
Thanks mate! Yes I feel like the details held nicely without ending up washed out which can sometimes happen
Takes me back to my studio days - Thanks
The sound your getting is awesome I love it .😊
Big respect to you're dedication to the classic sounds. Of course none of that would matter if you didnt write and play so well. Highly inspired.
Thanks William! I'm glad you point that out as my songwriting and performances vastly outweigh how important the gear is
Love the tune and dig what you're doing with tape and analog gear! It's definitely a more fun way to work and helps to keep you in the zone of creating/recording music rather than dicking around with software updates constantly and messing about with endless plugins. For those who are afraid to get into tape machines, the old Alesis HD24 units are great as well as the newer Tascam Model 12 / 16 / 24 units. Thanks for continually posting great and inspiring content. Now I'm ready to pull out my old Tascam 238.
Chris, that's exactly why I do this and thank you so much for taking the time to write such an awesome comment!
Excellent!!!
Glad you like it!
On a technical note, next time you bounce a mix back to the 8 trk, consider a pair of inside tracks, like 3/4, etc. Reason being is if tape is going to fail or have dropouts, it'll be on the edge tracks which are physically rubbing against the tape guides as you shuttle tape back and forth. Nerd-fest aside, love the song and the process!
Yes I learned that, there was a minor dropout for that exact reason! The track I'm currently working on is on 3/4 and works great :))
BTW thanks and glad you like the tune. The song at the end of the day is what it's all about!
With love to the 4-track, it’s great to hear your stuff in full Hi-Fi quality on the R2R. Well done 👏🏻
Thanks Ric, glad you enjoyed the video!
🔥 🤘🏻 👏🏻
As always, you created a nice song! Also thank you for uploading how you do your work as it is always fun to watch and there is a lot to learn from it. It must be hard to edit all the footages to make a video clocking thirty minutes..
Thank you! Yes videos take a very long time, just have to chip away at it bit by bit
This has been sitting in my watch later for ages, so I’m a bit late to the party. Great sounds. I have both those reel to reel players a bit broken so hopefully this is the kick up the arse I need to figure out how to fix them….
Cheers Callum ! Better late than never! Got a few issues with the 38 at the moment myself
Your music fits amazingly to this recording line up. I wish I could try similar setup in near future. Total ispiration here.
Thanks Lukas!
Really inspiring, Andy. You’re “Top of the Pops.” You’re the present-day Geoff Emmerick, but with the addition of great songwriting and musical skill. I’m old so I’ve never really made friends with the DAW approach…..too many distractions and it tends to suck all the artistic creativity out of the process. I’ve always been a gadget freak and turning knobs and pushing faders is a big part of the attraction. I’ve worked in live sound for 30 years and went through the whole digital revolution in that camp, too. Additionally, I’ve been a working musician that whole time as well. My struggle has been producing my own material. I’m fine at producing for others but I get frustrated tracking my own music. You’ve really inspired me, however and I have more enthusiasm to tackle the many unfinished songs I have lying about. Thank you! And Cheers! I’ll be over to Band Camp to purchase your catalog 👍🏼
Thank you so much! Yes I believe that there's a lot of worth still doing things hands on with no screens. I'm glad you like my music, after all noones walking down the street whistling a Preamp 😂
Best of luck finishing your songs..
Andy
Wow nice work Andy, this sounds great! I would love to make recordings of this quality. Very inspiring.
Thanks so much, glad you like it!
@Andy Pickering Which one do you think would be better to buy first, outboard EQ or outboard compressor?
@@fromthenorthwest compressor. You can eq on your desk
@@andypickeringmusic that makes sense, thank you!
you ever try riding the reverb via an aux during the mixdown? That way you're not having to print the reverb except on the final mix.
The M30 doesn't have aux on it. You either have to send and receive insert on a bus or on an individual channel, so I did this with the vocals on a bus and then brought the effect up on a fader with the intention of not printing it to a track but as I say in the video I wasn't getting the right blend. It's just too risky to not have that control. It's certainly possible to do it the other way around though.
Sometimes in recording there's loads of ways around a situation but I just had to get it done there and then so it was more it's easier if I just print it
Awesome video! Great song!! honestly I love your recording process!! I record in Logic but want to get back into 4-track but am scared to buy a machine off eBay (online in general Lol) as I want a good working machine. keep up the great work!!
Thanks so much! Yes buying off ebay can be scary but there's a lot of information out there to ensure you know what to ask
@@andypickeringmusic BTW is this song available as yet streaming or otherwise?
@@MoneyCrespin not yet, it's gonna be out later this year :)
Could you please do a detailed video of how to record a four track song on a Teac 144 cassette recroder. From nothing to a complete song. I see many instructional videos about the Teac 144 but nothing that starts from scratch. Thank you.
I don't have one sorry
What model Sony VHS recorder is that? sounds great!
SLV-SE710
Hey man. What’s your mixer?
It's a Tascam M30
Question - how come you use 'line in' and not 'tape in' from tape into M30?
I do use tape in on the m30 from the 8 track . Not sure which part of the video you are referring to?
What speed did you record on?
The Tascam 38 only runs at 15ips and mixed at the same on the 32 (although that has 7.5 option)
