I want to replace the engine of the air cooled 2000 t3 with a water cooled one. I would be glad if you can help me which engines are compatible. Greetings from Turkey.

if you want to replace it with a diesel, it is easiest to replace it with a 1.9D "1Y" or "1X" engine. If the turbo Diesel engine is 1.9TD "AAZ" or TDI then "1Z". You need a lot of other things to change than what you have in the current engine. Radiator, coolant pipes, cabin heater, engine overhang pipes, different gearbox mounts, thicker wiring harness for the battery (diesel starting is heavier) or relocate the battery to the engine compartment as it was in the original diesel version. The bell of the gearbox is also different than for the gasoline boxer. There are significant differences between the design powered by an air-cooled boxer gasoline engine and a liquid-cooled in-line engine.
