Matt, I'd really like to see a series on tips for beginners on sword ownership. For instance, how to sharpen, care for, and store or display a sword.
Care Ballistol is a good Option !
When you touching the blade ,clean it instantly or you get Fly rust !
I have maybe a Idiot proof sharping method with a list of tools Tungsten Carbide sharpener ( Accu Sharp)for the rough sharpening
for fine Work a kyocera ceramic sharpener with a ceramic disk if the hull break tape it together ,and a normal ceramic sharpener !
should work by the most blades !

Hear! Hear! I really would like a video about how to sharpen a sword. I think this is especially important since the Windlass/RA/Easton sword line will be needing sharpening.
@@cygil1 Unless you live in the people's republic of danastan you shouldn't have any trouble. I recently imported a 155cm Nodachi - zero probs.

I should be heading out there at some point in the next year and yes it would be good to get some filming done there.

This is the first time I've seen you explain the genesis of this range, and I'd foolishly assumed that they'd approached you, but as you're the prime instigator I think you should be extremely proud of what you've done here. I'm positive that there are many European museums who would be interested in a similar sort of arrangement. I'm saving up for the single-edged arming sword, but I'd love to own any/all of them.
Thanks. My original idea was to get stats for original swords and see if Windlass could make them for me, and potentially to sell as stock models. It was Windlass that suggested approaching the Royal Armouries about a formal partnership, and as I knew a couple of people there I pitched it to them. So the partnership wasn't 100% my idea exactly, but I guess I was pivotal in making it happen. I also chose the first 6 swords and measured/photographed them all. But colleagues at the Royal Armouries have also been important in making this happen, and of course Windlass have massively upped their game in manufacturing these. Hopefully it is a trajectory that will continue.

that fishtail pommel is beautiful. I really like simple, elegant swords with small detailed flourishes like that.
What's nuts is,
I have a Japanese sword made in the 1430's, signed Soshu Ju Sukehiro. These European swords look so different, and it's so cool to compare them. I will be getting one of these royal armories swords.
Matt should do cutting videos with each of these so we can see how they move in action
i always wanted the version they made in like 2012 when i was small happy to see they now make a proper version
I had and reviewed that sword, and for the price I think it was amazing value. However, the leap from that model to this is really like night and day - not only is this a much more subtle and detailed design, from the pommel detailing, guard form and hollow grinding, but due to the distal taper and more accurate proportions, this version handles much more nicely, is stiffer, and of course is accurate to the museum original.

If it weren't for the fact that I'm currently in Albion's queue for an Archduke (a very similar sword to this one), this is the one of this batch of swords that appeals most to me. Here's to hoping these are successful enough to warrant a continuation of the line. Cheers.

@@mikefelix238 I ordered my Archduke back in November 2021, so it should be TOO much longer before I receive mine. I figure that once I do, I will be obliged to review it, since it seems to be an Albion model that hasn't had one yet (at least I have never been able to find one in written or video format). I'm a tall guy, and bigger swords appeal to me. I've been curious for some time about whether the Archduke will feel more like a longsword or a dedicated two-hander to me. All that said, I may still end up picking up one of these Windlass IX.1787 repros to add to my collection of bigguns at some point.
I wouldn't say they were similar in any respect other than length. This English two hander tapers a lot more. The Archduke seems like a great sword as opposed to a large longsword.

That looks like it would be a great longsword for a friend of mine who's nearly 6'10" (208cm). He actually could use it as a sidearm to go along with his linen backed yew longbow.
This is the one I have most looked forward to seeing. I have wanted a repro for a while and went to the RA just two weeks ago to inspect it. They had mentioned it was getting a repro but not that Matt was involved. Once I learned the details of this series of repros I thought I thought this sounded perfect. Seeing the photos and comparing them to my own of the original it is a remarkable repro.
I do WoR reenacting and love these English two handers so it is great to have something to use.
Could we see the originals alongside the replicas please

Well, in Europe they arent as cheap anymore...the prices were increased shortly after release. The sword in the video costs a wupping 1150€ which is pretty much Albion territory.

@@divafever9754 when I looked at them on the museum replicas site , they were 6-700 us . To me that's a fair price for a decent quality sword . I mean the mall ninja swords are 2-300 now and that's junk .

Replicas of Royal armouries most iconic swords? What a splendid idea. Personally, and if I could choose, I would like something in the vein of Harriet Dean sword or some type of swiss sabre.
You would love the last one
The market for the XVIIIc swords, like the Harriet Dean, may already be saturated. Arms and Armor make a replica of one owned by the Royal Armouries and displayed at Leeds Castle. The Albion Alexandria is replica, I believe, of the one held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Darksword, Ronin Katana, and others offer less expensive, and probably less accurate, versions as well. On the other hand, a good factory made replica of a swiss sabre would be something new to the market.
So excited that you chose this sword to replicate Matt! I'm still stuck with my 1998 Windlass version of this sword. It's very floppy. Maybe I'll be able to upgrade!

So many two handed swords look clumsy and impractical but this looks deadly in every line. Imagining facing it it in the hands of an armored knight is a scary thought. I can see why he picked it.
Now we're talking! I'm not a longsword fan - but I do love a greatsword- and that is about the shortest I like a two-handed sword to be. A very sweet weapon, nicely done!

OK, I have a new favourite! Sadly I won't be able to afford any of them in the forseable future, so it would be really cool if you did a video (or in fact a series) of those swords in action (some bottle cutting etc.).

That's pretty and beautifully proportioned., Matt. Interesting to see it's almost identical in size and proportions to my Regenyei Trnva feder (the light version) but somewhat heavier, about 20% if I remember rightly. (edited to remove the effects of predictive text on "Regenyei Trnva" which was mangled beyond recognition)

I've always liked this style of sword - big two-handed swords that aren't quite greatswords (sometimes referred to as war swords). Definitely intending to pick one up at some point.
I just got mine. Some people have said theirs left a lot to be desired. They had poor uneven grinds and bad alignment. Fortunately, mine only has the slightest misalignment where the blade and hilt veers slightly to one side. Overall, I'm very happy with it. I have a Honshu Claymore and it handles totally differently in that it's more responsive and far superior for thrusting. I wondered if they'd be better quality from Royal Armouries because they wouldn't allow poor representation with a flagship item of theirs. By the way guys, Royal Armouries and Knightshop are selling them on reduction at the moment. If you subscribe to Royal Armouries you'll 10% off too. I was going to do that but I would have only saved £22 so there was no point cancelling my order. Having said that Knightshop is usually out of stock while Royal Armouries still had them. I hope that helps.
Is there any chance that you could make those measurements available to the public? I know at some point I would like to start making replicas myself and others might as well. If you had smaller weapons that are carefully measured I bet I'm not the only one who is interested. It would help me visualize the sword as well.
Also very much on my to-get list. So long as it doesn't offend for me to say it, for a "proto-claymore" customization I've *long* dreamed of, since I saw it on a painted cover for a MacDonald clan souvenir booklet on the Isle of Skye in 1995. 😉 (Wheel pommel, downsloping grip but with spatulate ends, not quatrefoils.)

This seems almost the same as 15th century windlass two hander that ive seen you and Shad make videos on. Im guessing the taper on the blade is the main difference besides the wire wrap on the hilt? As someone who owns the previously mentioned sword is differnet enough or just better enough to warrant a second purchace?

Mine came in last week and it is fantastic. Incredibly lively in hand. It’s ground wonderfully thin and didn’t take long to put an edge on it. I think it’s probably Matt’s favorite so he’s saving it for last.

It's very similar to the English 2-hander with blue leather grip & scabbard you reviewed some time ago. How do you feel the 2 compair in size, weight & balance?

I am thinking of purchasing this, with regards to sharpening, do think the entire edge would have been sharpened or do you think the 1st third along the strong may have been left dull for 1/2 swording and parrying?
Whoa, I love 2 handed european swords I just have no idea how to use one 😄 I've sparred against a few and in group melees, they're so intimidating and unless you have something with reach there aren't many chances to do anything but defend.

I would say that, looking at photos of the original, it does seem that the bulged ends of the crossguard are noticeably larger on the original than on this reproduction.

I'd be interested in a 1796 light cavalry saber that actually meets the specs, or one toledo style blade. A schiavona or Austrian Pallasch would be nice too...
If they made an accurate 1796, there'd be a 2 year waiting list I reckon...

I honestly figured you would want the hole where the blade enters guard... To be tighter... Kind of how you say about in a lot of your reviews of other makers... Or companies
Can you do a comparison of the old version, and this one?
I no longer have the old one, but they are very different in loads of ways. On a basic level, the old one was essentially an economy build and really good value, but lacked the distal taper, hollow grind, and edge geometry of this one. The fact that they come from the same manufacturer is really almost irrelevant, as this is a way more advanced and researched build.

were there 1 handed or hand and a half swords that were of this size and weight?
If I had the skill to know I could sharpen that up perfectly I would get it in a heartbeat, but I’d hate to take the risk on such a beautiful blade

@@scholagladiatoria thats cool man, getting the finale of your efforts - kinda feel like we are in a bit of a golden age for decent replicas and so on, like many things having the internet so accessible seems to have caused a shift in pushing companies to "get away with less" and strive for better :)

Matt, I’m looking into buying one but museum replicas in the US says it’s unsharpened but has a bevel. There’s no sharpening service box to check. Does the bevel go down enough to sharpen with something like a worksharp or will I need to send this one to my blacksmith friend who has a belt grinder?
Sorry my answer is so late. I have the IX 144 falchion and the edge is only about ,1/2 mil so not at all difficult to sharpen. Wish I had a worksharp!
The Originals' tang looks like someone used it for a massive Mordhau with the pommel and bent it on someones helmet 😅
Yes. It also has what looks to me like edge damage. There are a lot of questions about the Castillon group of swords, but to my eyes this particular sword (whether it was from the same group or not) was almost certainly used in rough combat. To bend a tang like that, you have to hit something really hard. If this is from the Castillon group and that group of swords were indeed booty from the battle, or another clash at a similar time, then I think this sword shows the sort of damage we might expect from a battlefield relic.
This would be all good if Windlass hadn't discontinued the slightly lesser blue version of this sword that I've had sat in my wish list for a while as you'd said in your own review that it was a half decent cutter. The price difference is 4x and the RA version I certainly don't consider to be 4x the sword. This just feels like Windlass are pulling a fast one on us and now I feel like I've been done out of a half decent cutter so on that note is there an alternative budget longsword that you consider to be a goodish cutter?

will this sword make a good cavalry or dragoon weapon since it is too big for wearing on foot but can still be practically carried on the side of the saddle?
Maybe if you dismount first. It is not very wieldy from on horseback.

I'm not really sure what you are implying, but if you mean the surface of the leather, there should be no issues at all. A lot of modern replica gauntlets are made incorrectly and damage sword grips, but if you get gauntlets properly tailored and following historical examples, then the grips remain undamaged. I can demonstrate this with my own gauntlets and swords.
@@scholagladiatoria I'm saying that two bare hands fit very nicely but how about two hands with gauntlets? I have large hands and adding gauntlets there are swords that can not accommodate my hands. No implication of build quality or grip problems. When I spread my bare hands the distance from tip of thumb to tip of pinkie is 25.5cm. This is a personal situation and not a criticism of that sword.

The old Windlass English two-hander was only very loosely based on this sword, as they did not have the detailed measurements then and this version is much more expensive and time consuming to make, having significant distal taper, hollow grinding, a hugely more complex pommel etc

Interesting sword i remember swords of similar sizes from effigies one dating back to 1342. They do seem to have scabbards but its not clear if they would have carried them on their belt. I would assume they did, since we do see very long longswords (although later in time 1480-1522) being carried by swiss and german citizens and some picture show having scabbards with belt systems.The the effigy from 1342 also shows scabbard with beltsystem.
Did those swords have a contemporary name or where they just named swords/longsword?
It varies. There seems to have been a few regional names, with German areas calling them something like 'battle sword' or 'war sword', in contrast to bidenhanders being called 'two-hander', 'alley-sword', 'slaughter sword'. The Scottish called them 'halflang swords', which many of the clamshell and Highland greatswords fit into.
Conversely, they show up as 'longsword' in Marozzo and a couple of other Bolognese and German sources without any differentiation in nomenclature, although a ricasso with lugs does seem to sometimes differentiate them.
@@nevisysbryd7450 Hi thanks for the answer, i meant more like pre 1500ish. I know that in burgundy they had specialised bowmen with what they called " two handed swords" probably like the one in the video.
Bidenhänder is the wrong term for Greatswords the word itself is however contemporary. Schlachtschwert( is always used for the big distinguishable swords in the sources. Overall term for all longer swords being longswords yeah. Alley-striker (Gassenhauer) is another term that i couldnt find any sources for aside from the alley-strike in longsword. But interesting that the scots called them half-long swords.
Was just curious if they did have a specialised name for those swords or if they still considered them just as longswords since sometimes in reports they seem to distinguish them from normal swords or at least imply a difference.
@@superrobotmonkeyhyperteamf3194 Pre-1500? Not that I know of. I found little indication of them outside of England until the very end of the 1400s, and no nominal differentiation. While the depiction of them in manuals seem to imply some differences in usage, the nomenclature usually calls them 'longsword' from what I have seen.

Quite interesting one of the earliest ones ive seen was a german effigy iirc showing a similar sword but despite its size they do not seem to name it differently.
From what i gather from manuals there werent much difference and some authors like pietro monte even bluntly say it. So yeah could be they didnt see the need to differentiate since fencing wise it would be the same with the typical adjustments.
When are you gonna help with a spadroon or a Georgian era piece? Be interested in having some accurate replicas from that timeframe

Would the decoration on the end of the pommel not be evidence for it originally having a scabard, as that's when people are going to be able to see such a decoration.

I kind of wish more UA-camr's would make video's about this sword and I do want to know what the blade width is for most people who own this sword because Kult Of Athena says that the width if 46.2 millimetres but the width is apparently supposed to be 50 millimetres I can't tell based off of seeing video's and images but I am curious as to the width most people find it having
You keep mentioning Ewart Oakeshott sword typing, you ought to do a video on him and the system. Is his book even still in print? I know the Wisby books are long out of print, but Ffoulkes is reprinted, as is Sir Ralph Payene Gallowey’s excellent book. Brian Flax’s excellent book on mail has long been unavailable.

Well, you need the money to pay for it, and I guess you need to legally own or lease the wall. Otherwise no problem. Just don't wander down the street with it, or keep it in the car boot "just in case"!
There are no restrictions on the ownership of straight swords in the UK, other than having to be over 18.
