The man who plays Terry Silver is an actual Martial Artist and a Stunt Man/ Fight Choreographer in Hollywood. He had retired as an actor years ago, but he has been involved as a choreographer with Cobra Kai since a couple seasons before they convinced him to reprise the role of Terry Silver.

A lot of the younger actors look a lot better now in terms of their technique but I want to give a special shout out to the actress that plays Sam. Early in the show here karate was really bad, it was very obvious that she had never had anything to do with martial arts before. But in the later seasons and especially season 5 she looks SO MUCH better. It's obvious that she's taking it seriously and really putting in the work it takes to learn something like that, and she deserves a lot of credit for it.

@@thestruggler340 I can usually tell if the actors have some formal training when watching fight scenes in movies or TV shows. Good choreography definitely helps to hide the flaws in the actors technique, but I can, with a fair degree of certainty, often tell whether someone has trained or not. In Cobra Kai, I'm confident that the actors that play Hawk and Johnny Lawrence have actual martial arts skills that go beyond stunt/choreography training. Watch Steven Seagal's earlier films, for instance. The Aikido looks "legit" (or as legit as Aikido can look) as far as the trips, throws, and hand fighting/parrying, but his punches and kicks are straight garbage. No chamber, no pivot or rotation, just ugly ass striking. Same applies to grappling scenes: it drives me nuts seeing someone "choke" someone out on screen when the actors hand placement and grip is all wrong. It's like watching a movie with a military theme with my buddies that were in the armed forces: they can't avoid pointing out when the stuff they are seeing on screen is incorrect.

@@isaacyeon6334 you can’t be a decent martial arts unless you pressure test something and have done it for a number of years so to say they are a talented martial artist is ridiculous, if you are a dancer learning fight choreography is a piece of cake but learning how to put power in your kicks and punches, learning how to avoid and counter learning good technique and learning combos all comes from hard work and training and pressure testing. The most you can say is he has potential to be a to be a good fighter but to straight up say he’s a talented martial artist is just plain wrong

@@TheElbowMerchant you are right that William Zabka has done martial arts as he went on to learn and even become a teacher of tang soo do after the original karate kid and Jacob Bertrand did taekwondo for a couple years. Thomas Ian Griffith has done karate for a number of years also but the rest of the main cast are mainly just dancers. I agree Aikido doesn’t really work in the real world and is just flashy I’m also not a fan of point karate and taekwondo as they tend to teach bad habits from trying to only go for a quick point and grappling scenes also drive me crazy.

A Brazilian dude who played soccer (at a college level) was training with us and was sparring a beefy girl (not fat, think farmer jacked lady). He threw a round house and she threw up her guard and it looked like she stopped the kick just fine, 1 or 2 seconds pass maybe she tried to through a punch but her arm drops and she can't lift it tries to keep on, but taps out within 1 minute. Come to find out he broke her Humerus. I don't think I've ever seen such brutality with my owns eyes before or since. He felt so bad he quit when he found out.

I'm a really huge fan of that Johnny Vs. Daniel fight
so much personality and character is shown through how their styles clash. It shows that Johnny's formidable because he's fearless and adaptable. His arm was disabled and he immediately had an answer for it.
I also applaud the choreography for finding two moves to land at the same time like that that not only look cool when they collide because it's not just two punches, but also pretty in-character for both of them. Johnny is seen as the aggressive one, striking first, bar fights. It makes sense that he would do some flashy punch while Daniel goes for a relatively safe crescent(?) kick while also trying to evade.
It ended in a tie because as much as we want to know who would win we really don't, y'know? It's like Batman and the Joker. The fun of their dynamic is that they oppose each other and drive each other to do better.

did you see UFC's Chris Barnett have an adverse reaction in the middle of the 1st round, while the org's doctor and commentators ignored the fact half his face was suddenly dead, and kept the fight going!? SMH --- Is still alive (a couple of weeks later)?

I'd really like to see the choreographer encourage advancing/retreating footwork with all the punch/parry stuff, it would give it just that extra pinch if dynamism and some realism (you can say they got out of range, rather than they just stayed out of range) without needing to be that much more complicated

The part with the pressure point shutting down a limb, I've never seen anything like that except in the UFC (Chito Vera vs Sean O'Malley, Mighty Mouse vs Henry Cejudo, Anthony Smith vs Jimmy Crute) where they will calf kick their opponent that hits a specific nerve. I think its the peroneal nerve?

That jumping scissor throw from Daniel, is a judo technique and is banned in competition because it wrecks uke's knees.

The way to pull off a flying scissors in sparring is to put your left hand on their shoulder and push down while you jump into the scissors. Aim for their waist not their knees when you scissor.

I love everything about it the old-fashioned story good versus evil no gray area and is it just me Sensei Seth or does Daniel and Johnny remind me and maybe reminds you of Ken and Ryu from Street fighter you know one is dark hair one is blonde they're both equally skilled one is kind of a party animal the other one likes everything straight and narrow very similar

And see how Johnny basically was doing similar jobs as Miyagi I think they should have a spin-off of this show where Johnny becomes a new Miyagi because I think he's got what it takes to be the new Miyagi cuz maybe Mr Miyagi was a Johnny Lawrence when he was younger

Sensei Seth can you do a video where you break down the fight scenes in The Raid, The Raid 2 or The Night Comes for Us?
Those movies have some of the sickest choreography and very high skilled actors and stunt doubles

Sensei Seth so you don't get copyrighted you should re enact the fight scenes, playing all the characters at once! that'd also show them you could replace any of their actors if the need arised 🤣

Expanding on why you don’t really get hurt in the air. When you’re in the air you aren’t able to increase force. You can’t push off of anything. So when you’re launching of the ground there’s a large force then you’re actually decelerating in the air then lending you have impact. So whatever you’re doing in the air is a result of grater forces you exerted on the ground.

the funny thing about the finals fight of season 4 is that jacob bertrand and tanner buchanan (the actors for hawk and robby) acually had a bit of competition between themselves as they were the best at martial arts between the actors. and I forget if it was in the filmings of season 2 or 3 where they had a sparring match to determine "who is the best" between them too. but I dont think they ever said who actually won. so this season 4 fight seemed like a nod to the actors own "rivalry"

When I started Muay Thai I was told you have to learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist. That's why a seasoned martial artist can do things like keep their hands low some of the time.
