  • Francis Sinclair opened a chair factory in 1861 in a small brick building on the banks of Skaneateles Creek in Mottville in 1861. Known as the Sinclair Chair Factory, business was booming and in 1871 Mr. Sinclair added two more buildings to meet the demand for the chairs. In 1901, he sold the business to John Allen who changed the name to Sinclair-Allen Chair Works and later merged with another company and formed Mottville Chair Works. The chairs were manufactured through the 1940’s when the company closed.
