  • The Ram Mandir Temple is being inaugurated today. The Ram Mandir is a Hindu temple whose construction is being completed in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located at the site of Ram Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Rama, a principal deity of Hinduism.
The site is formerly the location of the Babri Masjid that was built in 16th century AD. The idols of Sita and Rama were placed inside of the mosque in 1949, before it was demolished in 1992. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India delivered the verdict to give the disputed land to Hindus for construction of a temple, while Muslims would be given land elsewhere to construct a mosque. The court referenced a report from the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) as evidence suggesting the presence of a structure beneath the demolished Babri Masjid, that was found to be non-Islamic.
On 5 August 2020, the Bhumi Pujan (ground breaking ceremony) for the commencement of the construction of Ram Mandir was performed by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India. The temple, currently completing construction, is being supervised by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. On 22nd January 2024, Modi served as the Mukhya Yajman (chief patron) of rituals for the event and performed the Prana Pratishtha (transl. consecration) of Ram Lalla. The Prana Pratishtha ceremony was organised by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra.
The temple has attracted a number of controversies because of alleged misuse of donations, sidelining of its major activists and politicisation of the temple by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya is the crowning glory of President Modi's Hindu ambition and it is expected to boost his credentials in this year's election.
An idol of Lord Ram (one of Hinduism's most revered deities) was unveiled in a consecration ceremony conducted by Modi and broadcast to millions.
Many Hindus are celebrating the opening of the much awaited complex, that is seen to be the birthplace of Ram.
The building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya fulfils a decades-long Hindu nationalist pledge. Many Hindus believe the Babri mosque was built by Muslim invaders on the ruins of a temple where the Hindu god was born. The movement to build the temple helped propel the BJP into political prominence in the 1990s.
