  • Why do women beat men with sticks during this strange Holi celebration?
Lathmar Holi (Holi of sticks) is a Hindu festival celebrated in the twin towns of Nandgaon and Barsana (also known as the towns of Radha and Krishna). These towns are 40 kilometers outside of Mathura in India. Every year, during the period of Holi, thousands of devotees and tourists visit Mathura to celebrate the festival. The festivities last for more than a week.
The festival of Lathmar Holi recreates the legend of the divine couple Krshna and Radha. According to the legend, Krishna wanted to tease the women by spraying colors on his beloved Radha and her girlfriends. However, as Krishna and his friends entered the town, they were greeted by the women carrying sticks. Radha and her girlfriends beat the men with their sticks and drove them out of the town. So, every year to celebrate of Holi, men are beat by women with sticks and have colors thrown at them.
The unlucky men who get captured by the women are forced to wear female clothing and dance in public.
Part of this tradition that is rooted in mythology involves the men singing provocative songs and using cheap pick-up lines on women. The women then respond by getting offended and beating the men up with sticks.
The Lathmar Holi festivities last for over a week.
Lathmar is a Hindi word that translates as:- "Lath" means stick, and "Mar" means beat. "Lath" and "Mar" togther means playing Holi with sticks and colors.
