Also, many Indian scientists like S.N Bose did MSc in mathematics. But, the switch is not easy in India. You have to write competitive exams in Physics like jest, net and gate in physics. You may have to face other issues while applying for professorship. There are some institutes that take for phd in Physics like IISc, some IITs or may be IISERs ( You have to search for them) where you can find experimental Physics labs.
