Just bought my first rum - Plantation Original Dark (US$25 / 1L, it was basically the cheapest non spiced-rum brand I could find in my area that you name-dropped). Been a whiskey neat drinker my whole life and I am happy to go on a new journey. Cheers!
In the US, you can get the 1.75 liter plastic handle of Doorly's 5 year for $30 and the 4 year Flor de Cana for the same. That's a great starter. Also, I am finding that if a cocktail requires rhum agricole, I can mix half and half Wray and Nephew with Appleton Signature and get a good result.
Hi there, a beginner here. My first rum was Captain Morgan dark rum. I then tried Gosling's only to find out that it has added sugar (and color? ) to it. Since I'm into low carbs, I am only interested in rums with no added sugar and preferably with no added color as well. I've now tried Flor de cana 12, and I like it. I'm waiting for Appleton 12 and Mount Gay Black, then soon Plantation Xaymaca and Doorly's. Your channel is really helpful. Thanks.
This comment deserves a whole Book in response. Look. Generalising here, most Rum does have Colour (same as some Whisk(e)y) and a lot of Rums have added Sugar too. Captain Morgan obvs being a big for all that. The fact is All supermarkets demand a consistent product, month on month, year or year. Rum producers don’t really publish this, except for Plantation. Plantation are epic for telling you exactly what’s in their Rums.
@@StevetheBarmanUK Thank you for taking your time to reply. Yes, true, the reason I only look for those with no added sugar (or color). There are a few, and it's okay. 🙂
One of my first rum was Bumbu from Barbados I found it so sweet that it was delicious and the bottle had something to do with that (the pirate myth) and I don’t know but I’m pretty sure there’s sugar added even though I don’t know if it’s pot or column still. (Are Barbados rum, which are English style, more frequently pot still just like Jamaica or more blended?)
So this isn’t “Barbados Rum” in the truest sense of the word. You’ll taste VERY different rums from WIRD, Foursquare, St Nicholas or Mount Gay. None of those will be even remotely close to Bumbu. In fact I think (although not 100% sure) Bumbu is a blend with other countries. They just buy Cheaper Rums and blend then add flavourings like Vanilla. (It’s basically a “Spiced Rum”.). As whether they are Pot or Column… the answer is all Distilleries have a mix of both. But all produce a Pot Still Rum, and a Blended Rum. Even Appleton in Jamaican is a blend of Pot & Column.
Never heard of it before, so just looked. It’s not a proper UK product. Which means it isn’t imported on mass. But a couple of places have it but it’s well over £60.
@@StevetheBarmanUK oh I thought it would be more available. Got it at my lokal store in Germany for 45€. Thanks for the reply and keep up the great work!
Unfortunately my options for rum are very limited near me, as I live near dingle. So I have to order from Dublin. I have to get a bottle of Agricole as I have not tried any.

Steve do you have a copy of the tiki cocktail book "Smuggler's Cove"? It's beautiful and invaluable. Part recipe book, part history book, written by witty and wise people.

I really appreciate the unaged agricole as I came to rum via rye whiskey and tequila.

Hi
Why can I not save this video??? 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I just buy a collection of different boozes and just hope they can last more than a month, which some don't 😂
I wonder how many people that watch this video have actually never bought rum once.
