  • My prints begin with sketching and photographing out in the landscape. Here I am in North Yorkshire and County Durham collecting material using Procreate on my Ipad alongside sketches on paper and photographs.

What fun!! And I share your discomfort with balance and heights...but am glad you persisted in this case!

Thanks for the video Laura. loved the sketches. Please show more of this. It's been a long time since I've been at High Force. There was a lot more water then. Keep safe and stay well.

Hi Laura, what an unexpected surprise. Some years ago we visited our daughter who works in England, and she took us on a tour to that beautiful High Force waterfall. I took some fotos and made an etching print at home, but I always struggle with trying to put to many details in it. Your way of converting real landscape into great prints is very inspiring and I‘m learning a lot.
    Greetings from Germany.

Brilliant video and subject to talk about its lovely to see this part of your creative process. I struggle with this side of it and how to transform what is actually there in the landscape to what to include in my sketch/print. Thank you x

I really appreciate this so much! I am improving with my linocut skill, but I really struggle with what to print. I’m not a natural drawer and find it hard

Totally sympathise with the fears - not sure-footed or comfortable with heights myself, and I’m also short (you’ll be ok there!) so often end up sliding down bits that other people stride down. As for the photos, I do take photos for their own sake as well as preparatory to drawing. But if find the rule is that a good photo per se rarely makes a good drawing or print - the rejects for purposes of posting for their own sake are almost always the ones that furnish useful art reference. If it can be a successful photo, I think that’s the right form for it. While drawing and various print techniques can elicit more elusive and perhaps more fundamental worth. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Laura, no wish to detract from your excellent video, just thought you might like to know that your location was actually at the Strid gorge on the river Wharfe.

Hi thank you - I did know it’s not the River Strid - but if I just said it was the Strid, it’s a bit confusing for those who don’t know the area - but thanks for clarifying 🙂
