Laura: I've enjoyed your many videos. For over the past year, I've been meaning to share with you a little trick I learned from experience in 1977 that reduces the fraying of the hessian backing of lino and have taught to my students since 1980..
Step One: Thin PVA (plain old school glue), 75% glue + 25% water
Step Two: Using an old brush, apply a thin coating of the diluted glue on the back and slightly to the side edge of the lino, allow to fully dry to touch -- about two hours -- and then, place the lino between 2 pieces of parchment paper and weigh it down to flatten for 24 hours.
Step Three: Repeat the above steps once.
Step Four: Proceed staining the lino as per your usual method, etc., and carve, etc.
I hope this might be useful for you. Best regard from across the pond!I've enjoyed your many videos.
