What a great night of racing we had at Western Springs. Local hero Michael Pickens No.2 put hisself on the front of the grid in the Sprint Car final as did Joel Myers Jnr. No.46 from the USA. Both drivers were playing games with each other at the start which caused one or the other to jump the start. After a few restarts the race got going but soon after there was a massive crash going into turn 3 Jamie Duff No.19 and Jamie McDonald No.71 came together on the back straight and both cars ended up doing end over end rolls with No.71 flying high into the fence at around 140kph. Car No.71 got stuck up in the fence causing serious damage to one of the tall fence posts which had that section of crowd jumping backwards. All drivers walked away. Fortunately the organisers were real hot on keeping the kids away from the fence all night and would not let this particular race start until all the kids were 2 metres back from the fence. After a 30 minute delay for fence repairs and 4 cars being towed away, the final was restarted. The race was now down to 16 cars with Pickens and Myers Jnr putting on a show up front until Michael Pickens hit a big rut going into turn 2 that spun him out forcing him to the back of the grid for the last restart. The young American Joel Myers Jnr was in a beautifully prepared loan car and won the final quite convincingly.
Watching Michael Pickings spin out was bad news for the Kiwi crowd but the organisers announced some good news in that racing at Western Springs is set to continue until 2025. Yayy!
