I tend to hear him when the skip is good but this was the first time I was ever able to get through, much to my surprise! I think normally there are so many other stations calling, some with more power.
Well done on the contact on 4 watts. My friend spoke to an English ex pat in Malta using a Maycom EM27 (also 4 watts), and my old K40 antenna on his car from the Barnweil monument on a hill (approx 600ft asl), just behind Prestwick Airport. Proves you don't need mega-watts to make the contacts.
I have since managed to contact this station again from a better location on top of a hill. Unfortunately the frequency was quite busy again so I was battling with other stations calling at the same time! However, the skip this summer has been very good and I've had many good contacts on this ordinary UK40 radio.
I've had some amazing contacts without using burners the best was a SSB contact to Australia using a Ham International Concord 11 and a silver rod 12 watts. I've also contacted around the UK and a fair bit of Europe with a basic 4 watt set in the car with several anntena over the years. I was sitting in the carpark of B&Q Falkirk central Scotland talking to a guy from Dover. My favourite contact was one day while walking the dog I grabbed a realistic walkie talkie I had on UK 40 it was a small 40 channel 4 watt rig with a could rubber duck antena that day I was talking to a guy about 55 miles away Is it just me or do you think it's more fun contacting a distant station with basic kit rather that running huge burners through beam Antennas.
using standard powered is always good. those with 1kw burners sat up on a hill speaking across Europe think they are doing well. it's laughable, taking a scaffold pole and a 5/8 wave dipole up on the top of a hill, using a huge 1kw burner. Those kind of cretins give cb radio a bad name, over on the ham bands you find a lot of the same, although most now use the Internet and talk via Web link ups. Hence over complicating things just for the sake of it. the Web allows you to speak to strangers all over the world, why connect a 2 way radio to it. lmao
takes me back to the early eighties, with my high gain silver rod, tristar 747 sideband and york jcb 863,,before 27/81 i had a midland 150 m,as as a seventeen year old back in late 81,i would have killed someoneone for a sideband set with a high button, unfortunately legalisation pretty much killed the fun overnight

It's a full size Springer antenna made by Sharman Multicom, fitted to the car roof with a 7" mag mount.
