This was once an Army Base. When the Indians attacked, raided and burned Indian Key (one mile south), two long boats were sent to save the inhabitants. Their little cannon wasn’t secured properly and when they shot it, it came lose and fell in the water. The Indians were fed up with this so-called trading post and destroyed it and killed everyone living on it. It, Indian Key, never recovered but it is a Florida Sate Park and fun to visit.
