  • A large flock of Snow Buntings hang out at banding traps in York Region. The birds caught here will be quickly weighed, aged, sexed, banded and then released. This is part of the Canadian Snow Bunting Network projects: www.birdcanada....
The goal here is to understand and protect these birds.
Wild birds should never be trapped for sport, pet trade or for illegal export.

Hi Jimmy - the people doing this are trained bird-banders and have a permit issued by the Canadian Bird Banding office under the authority of the Migratory Birds Convention Act. The birds are briefly caught, studied and banded. Researchers catalog the age, sex, size, fat content of each bird and then place a lightweight band on one of the bird's legs. Then the birds are quickly released unharmed. When banded birds are re-captured in different areas researchers can map migration patterns. These Snow Buntings are known to move from Greenland across Newfoundland, Quebec and Ontario and much of northern Canada. People should not try to catch any species of wild bird like this for the pet trade, food or whatever -- that can only lead to unnecessary and cruel bird death and local or complete extinction of a species.

@@PenOpticon Thank you for replying to my comment. I am an absolute huge fan of wildlife and especially birds 🐦. I know that in some countries Bird trapping is still not illegal and it breaks my heart to see a wild breed bird imprisoned in a cage...Thanks again for educating us on your wonderful research. Regards. Jimmy

At 47 seconds one bird ran out of the cage and he ran from the opposite wall across the cage and out in a straight line. So, I can’t figure out why the others can’t get out.

These Snow Buntings enter the traps to eat corn. Researchers extract the birds safely to measure and weigh them - and also band them. Then the birds are quickly released. This makes it possible to study their migration pattern and assess the health of the flock. Thanks for checking it out.

This approach only works for a few species like Snow Buntings that flock in these corn fields. Only a few birds are caught and then they banded and released. This helps track their health and migration patterns.
