    Hey guys, you know how much I love CNC's so I decided to upgrade to a larger CNC for the shop. This bad boy will cut a full 2ft by 4ft sheet at once! The Axiom Precision AR8 Pro is one solid machine. I cannot wait to put this thing through the paces!

    Very informative and well produced. I haven't given a thought to adding a CNC machine into my woodworking shop until I watched a Jay Bates video (X-Carve machine) which caused me to begin looking for information. I was pretty convinced that either an X-Carve or Shapeoko was the way to go until I found the Laguna and thereafter, the Axiom CNC machines. I am about to the 100% that I will add a Axiom into my shop... not sure how deep I want to go with this venture... your thoughts? Many thanks and keep up the great work. Cheers

      Thanks Kevin! I have a full review on my website if it helps you but in short I started with a Iconic CNC and moved to something bigger, the Axiom. I am a huge fan of their team and their machines. They we're gracious enough to make me an affiliate as well! So if you you do go that route, I offer one on one support to folks that use my link. 💪💪

    We have the AR8 Pro as well. Great machines! I noticed you did not show the lifting of the machine up onto the stand. Did you have to bring in some additional muscle? I had to hire a piano moving company to carry ours to the basement (no walkout plus the basement stairs make a 90-degree turn part way down). There was no way my wife and I were going to be able to lift that beast and carry it down the stairs ourselves.

    • @SouthernGinger

      +Mike DeRegnaucourt haha I didn't show it because o split my pants lifting it... Haha. No I just grabbed some neighbors to help! :) Nice catch :)

    • @DCDLaserCNC
      @DCDLaserCNC 6 років тому +1

      The only reason I caught it is because I knew the AR8 Pro is a heavy beast. I love the machine. Only problem I have had so far was the wire inside the touch-off puck coming loose. I ended up soldering it back to the eyelet spade connector.

    That's awsome. I am working on building my shop and have plans on building a teardrop camper as well. I am going for a 4x8 cnc due to the fact I don't want to be limited on size. Anything you would change on the teardrop? I am currently doing research and may look into alternate materials.

    • @SouthernGinger
      @SouthernGinger  7 років тому

      +flyinshu wow that would be awesome! I was thinking about building a 4x8 for that very reason but I decided to go with a 2x4 :). As far as my teardrop the other thing I would change off the top of my head would be to use a torsion axle so the frame can sit lower and use a trailer with flat sides so you can let the skin over the frame. Other than that, I'm super satisfied with the quality and result :)

    Trying to decide between the laguna IQ and the axiom. How do you like the machine now that it has been awhile? What would you have done different? Any suggestions?

    • @SouthernGinger
      @SouthernGinger  7 років тому

      Hey! Thanks for asking! I haven't used the Laguna yet but there are some things to consider. The guide rails are mounted to the frame and not the actual top so if there is any deflection you will get an uneven cut, not to mention the Laguna is a plastic top with t-tracks mounted to them. This becomes more apparent when you over-tighten the clamps. Also the Axiom is a 4axis machine compared to the Laguna is a 3axis machine! Hope that helps, I am more than willing to talk to you on the phone about my machine and give honest feedback, all I ask is that you use the links on my site if you decide to purchase a Axiom! :D

    I just saw this and realized I have the same CNC you upgraded from and am considering the same one you went to... How has the experience been with the upgrade? What was the biggest reason you got fed up with the iconic?

    • @SouthernGinger
      @SouthernGinger  3 роки тому

      I actually really enjoyed the iconic and funny enough they're now owned by Axiom haha. I upgraded because I was looking for something with a bigger bed. Iconic actually introduced me to Axiom many years ago and I reached out to them first and loved their product. I use the Axiom very often!

    *Undoubtedly this is a great machine* but I can see now why I have become so drawn to the ShopSabre brand and their ShopSabre 23. The more I learn about CNC the more I realize it's about the ability for the tool to deliver detail over and over. I was considering Axiom as it's about the closest thing I could find to a SS-23 (small foot print, not 5x10) while still costing about the same. I had no idea you had to construct the Axiom and that makes me instantly step back from their products and not because assembly scares me.
    ShopSabre is constructed from structural steel and is all welded together, you assemble nothing or very very little. While I would assume most think I'm just being lazy in not wanting to build up my own machine it's rather two problems I see with pretty much all "hobby" CNC machines... First, Axiom costs slightly more than the ShopSabre and the SS is delivered constructed while Axiom saves money by having you assemble the product despite being more expensive. When I say, "costs the same" I mean for near equal products. ShopSabre's lowest end model (SS-23) is Axioms highest end model for non 5x10 machines.
    The bigger and vastly more important issue is accuracy... ShopSabre measures their surfaces with tools neither you nor I own, and they do this after the machine is built. When you construct your own machine there is no possible way you will get the accuracy and repeat ability of a fully measured and tested machine. SS's machines are welded together with 1 inch structural steel, it's not moving... When you bolt something together, even to it's frame, you lose accuracy along the way.
    I'm not trying to sway anyone towards SS over Axiom as both will do a very good job. But when all things are considered I feel SS's added 4th axis allows for a dramatically larger diameter of material as it's placed on the side of the machine avoiding the table top limitations. Knowing screws won't comes lose over time or simply loosen as I construct other parts of the machine means I will have a more accurate machine with greater repeat ability.
    Again, both great machines, but I recommend people check out ShopSabre if you are looking to spend 9-15k (the router/spindle change costs dramatically). I'd argue that SS's upgraded spindle is far beyond Axiom's as.
    All that being said, thank you for the video!
