Its so strange watching this in 2023, I couldn't watch this series at the time because of Helen Wood so I skipped it. Its literally the only series of Big Brother that I've never watched so its so weird seeing it now all these years later. They did a really good job with the house and theme of this series.

Since I live in the United States, I watched our version over the summer and currently I'm watching Australia version which is really entertaining. I'm sort of excited to see if I like this UK version..
It was very clever what production did at the beginning of this series. They used the recency effect to con the audience to selecting Pauline as the first power housemate. All of the 9 other contestants who preceded her were all in their 20s, white (with the exception of Mark, who is 1/2 Egyptian) - and then the last one to go in is a 49-year old rapping black grandmother type. Of course, she was going to stand out in the viewers' minds - compared to the others. I think that was step one of their plan. Get Pauline to be the first power housemate. Step two was to get Pauline the Patsy to give the pass to the final to Helen. Pauline was never going to give that pass to any of the 6 housemates who entered on the 2nd night (which included the only other black contestants, whom she might have been drawn to if they had entered on night one) - she hadn't even had a chance to talk to any of them (and, not surprisingly, she hated most of their VTs anyway) - so production screwed those 6 over royally by setting up a dual launch night. It's not surprising she gave the pass to Helen, who was the only other mother in there - of course, Pauline would identify with Helen most out of the original 9 housemates - and would buy into her VT that she's a struggling single mom who was coming on to the show to change her image from her scandal-ridden past. I'm sure they wanted Helen to have the pass to the final because she's very controversial and argumentative - which are great assets for reality TV - but are qualities that would've led her to get an early boot (like Sally Axl from the previous series). I think the producers were hoping for a female winner (considering that a male won the previous 3 years). They stocked this series with a lot of alpha females (Pauline, Toya, Ashleigh) who they were hoping would do battle with Helen, but there were absolutely no alpha males at all - which is bizarre considering the whole series was supposed to be about power.

just one year they should have a season where they start a house out with all the people they have injected late over the years. the people that would have had a chance to win if they had been given a go from the beginning and built up a fan base instead of being put in half way through after everyone picked their favorites already. I want to see sam pepper tear it up for a full season

***SPOILER ALERT*** Watching this over again it's so obvious Helen is in on the fact she will be safe and eventually win. BB cast her to talk about her Wayne Rooney scandal to bring in ratings and knew she would become hated by the public so they made the twist to keep her and her drama in the house...
My favourite part of BB each year is the launch night! Great excitement and novelty.
This house is sooooooooooooooo much better than the Big Brother US house and I'm American. WOW. CAN'T EVEN COMPARE THE TWO.
