I concluded that for consistent and repeatable welds, a controlled energy pulse was needed. I considered a microwave oven transformer based welder with a ssr as the control but after some googling I settled on the Malelectrics. I'm using mine with a car battery (~ $70 at one of the auto parts stores) instead of the LiPo battery (although the LiPo battery sure makes for a smaller overall unit. The car battery is rated at ~ 600 cranking amps and so I get consistent solid welds at around 15 mS. I've built about 4 14S-6P batteries so far and all without any issues. Having the two weld probes in hand makes for an easy way to manage the weld placement especially when you want to get 2+ welds per cell. I would strongly recommend this over any of the chinese welders.
Yeaaahhh I have being using Malectrics Arduino Spot Welder for over a year, it’s super handy and it’s pocket size, much smaller than the Sunkko 709AD and the 70kg pneumatic industrial battery welder that I use at work.
Some people have connected the Malectrics to supercapacitor bank but these high discharge LIPOs pack a big punch already.
Malectrics POWEEEEERRR ohhh yeaaahhh
Details on capacitor bank?
Thank you for the review. After watching how simple it was to assemble I purchased a kit. The welds are very consistent and professionally done.
Works great for me! Built two 10s5p liion packs so far. Works like a charm
Great video ! Excellent channel, well edited/produced !
Thank you for your assembly/info video. I was on the fence about buying a wall plug-in welder and your circuit breaking issues has totally convinced me to with an external battery. Thanks again
I LOVE your videos. You always have great information. I've learned so much from them.
I have this and waiting for batteries for the build. This is definitely a great spot welder for any DIY projects
Thanks man I’ve just put in an order for this spot welder. Portability is key if you need a repair to batteries on the road.
Great video! And the spot welder looks perfect considering the low cost of it. Will for sure need one of these in the future!
That is Awesome !! I see a lot of UA-cam videos, But I always come back to you for "Advice". Thanks
First time spot-welder here. The Malectrics is priced well, easy to assemble, and easy to use. I have no other experience with other spot welders. With a few tests on some bare strip I was up and running in no time at all. First battery completed in a weekend.
Looking forward to trying this myself. Thanks for the video!
Wonderful find, I have been putting off getting a spot welder due to inconsistent reviews. Building one of my own is so far down the list of 'to do's'....thanks!
Its a great spot welder, been using it with a car battery for more than a year with no problems. Now I just have to get the plastic housing with a fan - looks very clean.
Great review. I have get one of these so that I can start building my own ebike batteries. Thanks.
Lest I forget; another incredible give away to eBike builders. Thanks Micah!
Looks like a great, fun to build unit. Thanks for reviewing
Great video! I will be ordering one. Looks to be good quality. Thank you. This video helped me make my decision
Thank you for that great video I didn't know about that spot welder..
Approximately how long does the LiPo last until you need to recharge it?
I've got one of these. I used it with a car battery. Really happy with it and the 14s4p battery I built is perfect. I used 28ms for .2 nickel. It took maybe 10 days to ship from Germany.
One tip is to have a sanding block handy to clean up the electrodes after every few welds. Also mine came with the "auto" setting on which will automatically weld after a set time period. I prefer to do it manually with the foot switch.
Also I get better welds if there is a gap (or slit in the nickel) between the electrodes. It causes the current to go a longer way and has less arcing between the electrodes.
I'm looking into purchasing one of these in the near future. Shipping is estimated to be €40. Do you remember if that's the cost that you had to pay to get it? I'm looking at the website that is suggested in this video. Thanks.
@@paulrammer2424 I don't really remember the shipping. It's been a great unit for the few batteries I've built. There may be cheaper ones out there now.
@@sparks6666 Thanks for the input. I will look around some more before making a decision.
I will certianly look more into this. Looks great.
Excellent video..
I used it to assemble mine.
What size and brand of nickel strips do you use?
Thanks for the heads up on a good welder for at home. I like the idea of the large capacity of a car battery as a power source, 80Ah or so.
The Malectrics Spot Welder that'll Marc makes is the best I have used. I made several different welders before that were either dangerous or didn't perform leaving bad results. I highly recommend and give it 2 thumbs wayyyyy up!
I like this welder. Do you still recommend this one or any newer ones still?
Love these spot welders!
AveRage Joe what’s your favorite setting for the power? I’m using 0.3mm pure nickel
Hi Micah is it possible to use a Turnigy Lipo Batteries to a 48v hub motor in a ebike? Thanks
Thanks for the review, I bought the same (before I knew it I was considering a Sunko one) and was looking for the video how to assemble it. It's even cheaper than a Sunko welder.
Perfect timing on the review, thanks!
Very useful video, thank you for your effort.
I think this is a spot welder for me!! Will be giving it a try!
I made my own spot welder with a car battery that i could lend for free by a local garage. I just have a solenoid/relay between it an te welding tabs. And a push button that you have to hit quickly to get a weld. It has been working great and i have already build a 16s12p battery. It set me back 15 bucks for the relay/solenoid and cables.
Cool. By the way, "Devices switching more than 15 amps... are usually called contactors." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contactor
KABOOM!
I just bought parts to build my own as well. Sunkko got so many bad reviews
Looks good!
Great vid, thanks, Micah.
Great spot welder. I need to look into it.
You are a great teacher! thanks a lot......
Where did you get the €100 price tag from?? €130 for the lipo kit version
Nice kit 👍
I own this welder and I thought I'd share a few thoughts:
If you're considering buying this welder, I think it's important to note that you are NOT required to use the foot pedal. From the time the two welding leads touch the same surface, there is a small delay (iirc the default is two seconds, but you can set the delay) and the welder will automatically activate.
I recommend having two batteries for welding -- one to charge and one to use, this way you have less downtime when you drain one battery off.
Remember to keep the leads clean. I ran into issues with getting bad welds even at very high settings and at this point I'm reasonably certain it was due to carbon buildup on the welding leads.
Using it off of a car battery got a little awkward in terms of being able to see the screen and have the leads reach my work area. I think I'll be attaching the little display to a ribbon cable so I can better position things.
Excellent advice. I was scratching my head why I might need the pedal when I first got the device and used it as you described. The two battery advice is also good, unless you have plenty of time.
Why not charge it constantly (CV CC)?
Awesome, I was thinking in buying a spot welder, maybe this is the one for me.
Hi, can you check how many amps it pulls? Thanks!
WOW So helpful! Directions by Malectrics were hard to follow! This will help my EBIKE! God Bless
Hey! Is it dangerous or bad if the tips touch while welding?
It sounds like a double-pulse. Is it 2x by default or settable?
Does anyone have recommendations on a battery or should I just buy the same turnigy?
Cool welder, I like that it's so portable :-)
Hi there Just love your videos 👍 is there a controller for a microwave Transformer the one we see diys on UA-cam thanks
Great video
Hi Micah..A very concise and short video of what looks like my next spot welder and the price is DELUXE !!! Thanks Micah...Rick Marlow
Well any updates, like is this a real go to spot welder for you or are you back to the Sunkko? Also are you still using lipo or did you switch to car battery?
Hi.. is it okay to use a 60Ah battery pack on 13s 35Ah BMS?
Nice video!
What can this weld apart from battery's??
Sir, from where online can I buy this kit. Which site.
What size nickle strip was that?
Good vid, i just bought the same spot welder
I think one of those would be good for lots of small projects besides making battery packs. I'm going to have to look into one for myself.
I'm using a 3s 6ah 60c lipo to weld .3mm strips on my batteries. It won't stick well even with 70ms pulse time. Do I need a higher discharge lipo?
Can i hook up 4 18650 as a source for the welder? or it would be insufficient?
How thick is your nickel strip? Nice video.
very nice video! Based on this video, i purchased this spot welder instead of the Sunkko spot welder I was originally looking at. I am thinking about buying a pen attachment such as the Sunkko or ZSU to get more even pressure on my spot welds.
great video
love the new spot welder(the maletrics
Have you considered using cell level fuse wire?
Good video, just order one i think i be happy with it.
absolutely fantastic welder put it together today and run it with 650a cca car battry and auto weld function used 0.2mm pure nickel great weld on 15ms and when u pull the strip with plier of the cell leave nickel on the cell and holls on the strip cant be happier... plan to build 20s8p high discharge pack with Samsung 21700 40t cells using 2 layer of 0.2mm x30mm nickel sheet... 😜
never run out of joice with 80ah battry
would be nice if the rods were in some type of fixture to hold them together
Perfect!
This spot welder isn’t welding properly. I have Pb lead acid primary 60ah 620A Yuasa auto battery. Any suggestions?
NICE PORTABLE SPOT WELDERS !
Nice spotwelder, 🤙
That is neat!
I'm buying one of those!
First I have bought a Sunkko 737G Spot welder, but it did not work in my house. The 16Amp fuse did not work, even when I changed the connection to a 32Amp fuse. Only 0,1mm Nickel would be fine, but I need 0,15mm Nickel. So this Sunkko was not worth the money. Now I will try the Malectrics and hope it will work.
Interesting stuff :)
Can you update your website to identify where you like to purchase 18650 batteries? The hyperlink doesn't take you to an active seller. You had written 'I get my Samsung 26F cells from Aliexpress, usually from this seller but sometimes I’ve seen a better price here.' Thank you.
Thanks Micah! :)
Thanks for the review. You said the entire kit with the extras is around 100 euros but on the Malectrics web site is 130 euros or so?
Supply and demand…
I need a book!
I have the car battery version and it works great!
Arduino spot welders have been kicking around for a while, but this is ready to go. Nice price. I hope it catches on. Tom at alarmhookup (ebay) has low cost cells, along with the Chinese cells Jehu Garcia and Vruzend offer for around $2.50. Don't know if it changes anything, but the Chinese welders have a lot of question marks. I can tell people a basic 30 cell 36v battery pack can easily be done for around $100, with this. Of course, I am saving up for my Rivian because ebikes are so 2015.
Nice Vid.
I hope I can get a ride when you get it!
Congratulations, I really liked this video. The pulse duration parameter is very important. However, I think it would be even more valuable if the value in joules were displayed, which would abstract the voltage and the current demanded. If it is not possible to display in joules, the display could show voltage and current, in addition to the pulse duration.
thanks for sharing
Nice video.
Wow, those are some nice weldpoints...
Nice vídeos. I've just started todo follow you!!!
Need to 3D print a kweld type holder for those electrodes
Hi Micah, Please advice how to build our own BMS / PCB because In market when we go for buying there are hell lot of question about - charging / discharging current ration, capacity, and all. People say 1C is good, most vendors are giving 2C PCB. These are so confusing that a detailed diagram or how to actually make / select a BMS which will not waste the power and will give us best result. How to understand which IC / CHIP should be go for, how to draw / print our board. I really need your help to understand the BMS.
Portable welding xD
So nice!
You might of just changed my mind on which spot welder to buy!!
I need those book.....
Do you think this will work with a lead acid battery - smaller than a car battery?
According to Malectrics they recommend a battery which can deliver between 500 and 600 A, this is a size between 50 and 60 Ah. 60 is usually a common size for compact Class cars.
So cool :)
Hi Michal.. Would you recommend k weld or this one..? I see some interesting review for k weld so thought you would be the best to judge..
I've been wondering the same thing. Did you decide which one?
@@DoctorDiz maletricks (the one showed in this video) simply coz of cost..
Looks like a solid product for the price.
Just in time, as I was just considering the other option, this is much nicer...
I bought this welder because of this video. Were you surprised that the energy discharge made the cables move? I was... amazing...
Do you actively use this welder or do you have something else that you prefer? If you don't use it anymore, do you have any interest in selling it?
