In tonight’s episode of the podcast, I’m ranking all of my sweaters from least favorite to most favorite and giving a brief pros and cons of each. It’s a longer episode this time around and full of cozy, sweater-y goodness so join me! ☕️
The thing about icelandic and the courser Norwegian/Nordic yarns is that we don't wear them next to skin. They aren't produced to be knit into next to skin garments, we knit outerwear with them, and often wear them as the 2nd or even 3rd layer of clothing. Knitting in the Nordics isn't just a neat hobby, it's a life skill, and in some cases even a survival skill. Wools inherent ability to stay warm even when wet is something the people who inhabit the arctic regions have used to our advantage to survive and thrive in the cold conditions of harsh winters. Fishermen, farmers, hunters and herders historically wore thick wool sweaters made from the icelandic lopi yarn that slightly felted over time and made a slightly water repellent garment that protects against the elements very well over time, and most still do today. Thick warm socks, mittens, scarves and hats are also a necessity when venturing outside in cold weather. Knitwear is very much a part of fashion in Scandinavia and the Nordics because we still need it to keep warm, and this is also why such a big portion of our populations know how to knit. 😊
FWIW, I finished a sweater out of Tinde about a month ago, and as I’ve worn it several times I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how much it has softened up
Pro tip for softening lopi a bit. When blocking/washing, do a hair conditioner "wash" after washing. I usually wash all lopi first in a bath of wool detergent or shampoo, rise, blanch in vinegar mix (half a cup of vinegar in a full sink of water) and then I end off with a conditioner bath, rinse, lay flat for drying. To make the conditioner dissolve in the water I spread it thinly on my palms and dissolve in the water. Then you don't get clumps of conditioner in water.
I buy a tallow conditioner bar I use to do this with. I just rub the bar in the water to dissolve a bit. Not that handling a cream conditioner is hard, the bar just work so well for this. You can rub until the water feels just right…
@@My_Kraft_Room I use vinegar water to rinse my hair with. If I use clay to wash or a very mild shampoo , the vinegar is all I need to soften my hair. Then I don’t have to deal with residue and build up conditioners often leave us with. If I skip the vinegar, my hair is not at all soft. Crazy!
I've been looking for a cardigan pattern, and based on your love of the Felix Pullover, you've convinced me that I need a Felix cardigan. I'm always fascinated by not just finished objects, but how things wear over time and how well they actually fit into a wardrobe. Thanks for this one!
Welcome back, Tayler! I hope you had a good, relaxing time, but you were missed! This was a lovely re-entry and so interesting to see your sweater evolution. Thanks so much and I'm glad you are well and home safe.
I'm not a sweater knitter because I get too warm wearing them, but this was very fun and inspiring!! Embrace those Bobbles!! Life is such a Gift that Festive should always be in style!! I hope you'll wear it more often because it is a truly gorgeous sweater!!
i love this episode! made me feel so much better about wanting to re-knit the same sweater pattern multiple times 😂 I've only been knitting for 3 years so I'm still new. Sometimes it feels like every project should be something new. But it's been really nice to see the progress i've made in the items I've re-knit.
Oh I’m glad! Yes. If you love a pattern, never hesitate to reknit it. That’s where confidence to modify is born, whether you end up doing it or not, it’s good to give yourself that additional experience with one pattern so that you understand how it could be modified. ❤️
Thank you for sharing your makes! You mentioned not washing the No Frills Sweater. I would love to see a video about how to treat wool, wearing maintenance, etc to minimize washing on hand knit garments.
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSif I can add to this, I've been thinking of asking you if you have any ideas or tips on how to clean knits that have buildup. I live a pretty outdoor lifestyle in a cold part of Canada and I wear a mineral sunscreen everyday. I've noticed my store bought knits get stained by the mineral sunscreen and doesn't come out with regular washing. I've been really hesitant to make my own hats and cowls because when I have to bundle up to keep the cold Atlantic ocean air off my face, the sunscreen rubs off onto what I'm wearing. Also having 2 huskies and living in the woods means lots of dirt and mud and the bottoms of my hand knit socks have started to become discoloured. Not sure how to deal with that without wearing down or felting my socks.
Good for you for 'unplugging' and living in the moment with your family. I think that refresh is so important. I really enjoy these pattern parades. It really provides a well rounded look that provides a lot of info for helping to pick next patterns.
So glad you took a break, Taylor. It is so necessary to unplug from content creation and get present in our daily lives. I know you work so hard, and I sincerely hope you're taking care of yourself and taking the time you need in between projects to ground, center, and get inspired.
Also: please make more endor!!! It’s my very favorite of alllll your colorways. Absolutely stunning. I want a sweater in it 🥰 Last: your admitting to not washing the no frills sweater made me feel so much better about my personal wool sweater care routine 😄
Just came from your other video where you said the pattern for the black tee is coming out on May 12 🤣🤣 I'm glad you decided to make a pattern because I'm in love with the little black tee from the moment I saw it
Tayler Thank you for such an amazing podcast ! We're drawn to similar styles. I've just finished my first Felix and wore it for the first time yesterday. There will be more!! The No Frills sweater was already in my favourites but it's gone way up in my future knitting plans. Ditto the Tulip sweater. Thank you for all you do!!
GM Taylor Happy for you getting down time as we all need to do … sickness no but feeling better is great I loved your tulip sweater I remember when you first knit it and showed it on … I think you look lovely and this pattern I ❤️!! I frogged a Felix this week. I had hobby lobby 100% wool held with suri alpace. I was just at point to split when I decided it is simply too heave for my climate. I will cast on again. Considering the Berroco mochi.
Thanks for sharing your review of the different sweaters. Maybe you could do an episode on how to keep your knits clean, free of moth holes, etc. I love my wool sweaters but find it hard to keep them free from holes
Hi, Tayler. I’m reading “Knitting in Plain English,” thanks to your recommendation. As a beginning knitter (coming from crochet), I especially appreciate this book. 🥰 Timely that you mention your “time off.” This morning I realized my right index finger is painful. 😢 Too many hours, every day, of crochet and knitting! With a two week trip starting in a couple of days I could… should…. leave my yarn at home. If I were smart. If I can stand it. But, how can I?? 🫣 I’ll go through withdrawals! But, if I don’t…. Surgery? What a dilemma. 🥀🧶
Love your bobbles lady! But agree that they're not easy to wear on the daily. I'm working on Sari Nordlund's Wood Anemone and she gives the option to knit it without the bobbles.
I’d love to see you do a video on the products and process used to over dye a hand knit. I’ve got a kimono mosaic cardi that I knitted but never wear because of the color. So many questions around mordants and which dyes, especially ones that are consumer safe.
Love this episode. Such good information about what might make a person favor or not favor a certain sweater. Here's my take on green bobbles: It's not the bobbles, it's the color. The color is amazingly elegant, which makes the sweater seem too elevated for running errands. Wear it more. It's glorious, or save that one and make a more relaxed colorway. The cropped Felix, I think you could find or make a nice little camisole bottom half and blind stitch it up inside the cropped Felix. It could have just a bit of lace at the bottom hem, or take a dress shirt and give it some nice shirt tails and the collar stitched right to the sweater. That way you get the extra length to make it super wearable, without adding a complete layer underneath. I think this might work well because a short sleeve sweater isn't really about warmth, so when you add a layer to the body area, you have extra heat generated there, but not everywhere. That gives it a 'not quite breezy enough, but not quite warm and cozy' vibe. So maybe you'd wear it more if you leaned into it more one way or the other. Add some length with more knit, or keep it cool, by adding the length in a different fabric. Cheers!
I just want to say that I think it's normal to have some knits that you never wear. I learn in my knitting journey, which color suit me best, which style to choose to fit my body, etc.
I also have a magnolia bloom in my collection and I adore it. It's one of my most worn. I knit it originally in acrylic and want to make another version in wool eventually (when budget allows :P) because it is just such a nice sweater. Every time I see your Felix sweaters I feel like I need to knit one, it really is a very versatile pattern.
Lovely to see you,Ina👋.You are such a a soothing and creative soul. Thanks for your wonderful podcast. Love that you prefer the natural light for filming 👌Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy and inspiring New Year.♥️& blessings from Melbourne,Australia.🙏🌏🐨xx
I think the mauve colour of the Tulip pattern one is really nice on you! In comparison with the first cardigan where you were unsure about the colour I'd prefer the mauve one for you hands-down. My personal favourite sweater of yours is the green one with the bobbles. Love the colour and its not-simple-ness (for lack of a better word)- who cares if it looks a little festive for everyday wear, it's fun :)
Great to see all your sweaters. For me bobbles are never too much, love them! And I think your Magnolia has a really pretty dark color, so it's all muted enough to not feel too festive. But that's me. I might like glitter too on a regular day ;).
I’m impressed- you manage to pair yarns and I have the worst time getting the drape elements that ayarnsttracted me to the pattern in the first place! I do find I have better results with LYS yarns vs big box yarns, tho but budget limits me!
I bet there are a lot of similar comments to the one I’m going to make, which is: wool is naturally self cleaning. That’s just one of the reasons why it’s so fabulous. I hope you’re smelling that wonderful lanolin scent-oh how I love that. Ok! I’ve heard a lot about Felix and think I need that pattern. Thanks!!xx
Since I have learned about wool naturally self cleaning, I rarely wash mine. How often do you think it's actually necessary though? Sometimes I wonder if I should wash before storing in the off seasons, however, I have also not washed them then, when they don't smell and haven't been pressed against my pits. I come from an "everything must be very clean, aka washed" background, so it still "feels" wrong to not wash them.
@@deeanndavis1256 I think it’s important to clean any spills (for instance food spills attract moths!), but all the Shetland wool artists and Arne and Carlos etc. say to leave your hand knits outside for a good airing before packing them away for the winter. I think common sense prevails - if it doesn’t smell or feel clean, then take action. There’s a lot of information online about this.
@@catnapper3923 all of that makes sense, thank you! I do spray my garments with alcohol and air them outside when I feel they need it. I haven't had any problems with moths, but carpet beetle larvae on the other hand, has been a real struggle since moving into an old house. Now my wool needs stored in plastic over the winter (I still check for pests/mold). They do so much damage so quickly!
Most wool is thoroughly stripped of it's lanolin in the process to turn it into yarn. Lanolin is produced by the sheep, much like how we produce skin oils. Therefore, once removed from the sheep it will not create lanolin. So, you would need to use a special wool wash with lanolin in it in order to have any lanolin in your wool garments. Also, wool actually holds onto bacteria. There is a bit of misunderstanding of science going around where a wool sweater was swabbed and the swab produced less bacteria than a swab of a cotton sweater so people thought the wool was resistant to bacteria. BUT the reason for that is not because the wool was antibacterial. Quite the opposite. The wool held onto the bacteria so it didn't transfer to the swab. Saying this, I don't wash my sweaters a lot, whether they're cotton or wool or whatever. I wear a tshirt underneath to keep my human fluids off of them so usually I just take them off and air them out and then put them right back in the closet. I'm not worried about bacteria, though, just my human stank scent lol.
I think you said you do make mistakes. I do as well! So funny! I usually find it as I'm finishing up the sweater. I try to think of it as life. Life's not perfect either. I also do love petite knits and am excited about trying the no frills sweater! Loved your podcast!

I was very surprised to hear you don't like the color of your Tulip so much! From the sweaters I've seen you wear in the podcast, this one was I always thought flattered you the most, because of the color 😁
Well it’s not that I don’t like the color. I do. It’s just that for whatever reason, I don’t reach for it. But like I sort of realize here in this video, it does look nice. And thank you for saying so Erika. ❤️
Thx Tayler. This was a really fun vid. My fav sweater so far is the Autumn League Pullover but I’m also almost finished the Carbeth Cardigan which I am LOVING!!! I am also finally going to try a Ranunculus and I have a sneaky feeling that will be my most favourite ever. 😊
I love the Felix pattern I’m not done with my first I only have one more sleeve and a few more inches on the body. I did it in a weird order because of yarn shortage issues. I already ordered my second sweater, quantity of yarn for this pattern. i’m knitting it in acrylic because it’s all I had and it’s coming out a bit heavy so I wasted no time and already ordered yarn for my second Felix. It’s my Christmas present to myself. I’m so excited.
I love all the sweaters!! I’ve made 2 Magnolia Bloom Cardigans and I have the Felix Cardigan pattern to do very soon! Now I want the pullover patterns for those two!! 😬
One should always ease back into 'real life' after being on vacation :) I love your sweater collection - I really need a Tulip, a Magnolia Bloom (which was already in my faves on Ravelry) and of course a No Frills. I have some of the Lion Fishermens Wool in my stash, and I have been thinking of a Petite Knit vest for it, and I love the idea of pairing it with some suri... I think a whole sweater will give me limited wearability here in south TX. Thank you for the idea and of course all the inspiration :)
I think that Felix my become my first sweater to knit. I like the straight sleeves but wondered what that rapid decrease would be? I’m newish and not quite sorting that out. 🤔
I like a crew neck or mock turtle neck more than other necklines for sweaters. I have a few with bigger necklines but I really have trouble styling them. I am really just now figuring out my sweater length, arm style etc. My favorite sweater currently is my Harlow by Caidree. I just bound off the Lyons sweater by Petite Knit and the Versal by Ailbíona McLochlainn and I have to block them but I'm really excited to wear them. I don't really have an issue with coarse, rustic yarns as long as I am not hot. If I'm hot, they are all scratchy
Before I really started watching the video I was wondering how that wonderful navy and burnt red sweater you wear would fare in the list. It’s my favorite. Lol.
You’re definitely overthinking the bobbles. Wear it. I made this sweater after seeing yours. I don’t wear mine enough though because the yarn I used is a bit scratchy. Not bad so maybe I just need to wash it again.
😂❤😮 I watched/listened to this while casting on, getting my NF Sweater going ... "Inga Krusiduller"/"Inge Dikkedarer", using some inherited yarn, that I stretch withvsome of "the right threads", "The Right Wool"? Hopefully it _will_ be useful. I will have to look up the " Felix" as well. Thank You for the company!
Now I really want to knit a Felix pullover! For the Magnolia Bloom, I know what you mean about the bobbles. I recently knit a similar pattern that has a lace yoke and bobbles. I thought the bobbles were too big. I think they were 5-stitch bobbles so I made 3-stitch bobbles instead. I like it a lot better.
So spooky to see your Veronika cardigan because I talk about that pattern in my podcast episode THAT I ALSO UPLOADED ON SUNDAY! [Insert Twilight Zone music here...]
I made the Felix pullover after watching one of your videos a year ago and I wish I had known because my armpit is way too deep. So I only wear it around the house really but it is so comfortable and I love it. I also made it with Superwash Cascade 220 and it stretches like crazy I may make another one very soon but right now I have three sweaters on the needles and need to get them done and they're going to take a while to finish one is the stripe pipe the other one is the Lumme, pull over by sorry nordlund and then I have one by petite that's on the needles but it's a larger needle I think a nine us which should be really quick but I got to the short row shaping and I thought or no the shoulder shaping and I thought I just didn't feel like doing it and then I just cast on for another sweater then I wanted to do a color work sweater so I can't stand for that sweater and I had to rip it back like four times in different spots and now I'm finally moving through it but I already have regrets with that because she says to start with a US 8 needle for your color work and then drop to us 7 for the main color in the body and I should have stayed with the us 8 needle I'm hoping that it'll block just fine but I also bought Fisherman's wool because of you and the sweater I'm working on is that white Tweed Fisherman's wool and I can't wait to get back to it especially after seeing your sweater finished it's just so pretty I can't wait to wear it . You have great influence over my choices. Ha.😂 I'm so glad you're back I missed you.❤
On the tulip sweater you’re feeling off about the color - I can’t quite tell on the video, but it looks like a cool plum/brown, as opposed to a warm one, and I always get warm tone vibes from you and your color preferences… so while it does have brown undertones if they’re cool ones then that could be what’s throwing you/why you can’t put a finger on it! Again; that’s just my phone’s color on the screen though, so I might be wrong.
A few things - I think the color of your Tulip sweater is beautiful! It reads purple-ish on the video. Not sure if that is how it is in real life, but I am a purple fan and I think it goes with everything! Your Magnolia Bloom is gorgeous and you should definitely wear it even just out for coffee! Also, I knit the Felix as my first sweater and the back right lace motif is offset just a bit. I think it is from where the BOR is? I'm not sure if that is what you experienced too. I am about to order yarn for my own Felix #2 so we will see if it is me or the pattern, but I think it is from the BOR.
I have to laugh about the bobbles on your Magnolia Bloom. In the 80s, when I was in my 20's, every kind of knitted embellishment was the rage, so I absolutely would have gone for a coffee in this (it would actually have been a bit of a reserved look, actually, considering the muted color). You've just gotten used to minimalism!
I absolutely love your glasses 😍 what brand are they? I’m glad ur family is feeling better. I’m not gonna lie I missed ur episodes but I understand completely. Well wishes from PA. I’m currently knitting the slow down sweater from one of ur previous episodes.
Great podcast! Have you ever found a pattern that is close to your Little Black Tee? I am too new to knitting to try to modify my own pattern. So love your Frankensweater too!
Just finished this fun episode. 😊 So makes me want to grab my needles! Even though, as a beginner, I’m only knitting dishcloths and scarves. 🧶🌻 (And, trying to give my hands a rest… 😔)
Tayler, I love your channel. You are so inspiring! I am planning to knit the Magnolia Bloom cardigan. The pattern calls for a DK weight yarn with two strands of mohair, but you knit your pullover with just one strand of suri, is that right?
I have finished felix sweater for a while i love it with 2threads in Drops alpaca brush and multi coloris Lang light warm 47:18 and enough long ( on my hips ) i want knit Tulip sweater in black i started magnolia cardigan in bulky grey and novice sweater 2 threads too : kid silk and running thread for sock orange pumkin colors .. just hrm pour second sleeves and it will be finish .. i like your video and all your range of 10 sweaters .. i am french speking but it is a pleasure to hear about our same passion of knitting . And sometimes it is difficult to explain to the family that we don't need clean so often the woolen sweaters .only let outside for winding air . . thanks a lot and a big kiss .. see you soon
When you say “rapid decreasing” at the cuffs, what do you mean? I like bell sleeves as well, but I never know how many stitches to decrease and how to space them. Any tips?
Do you have any interest in knitting the Felix cardigan? I just finished the pullover and it’s great. I’ve also knit Amy Christoffer’s pressed flowers cardigan and it’s just so my favorite for many reasons so I’m tempted by the Felix cardigan 😊
I have yet to make a sweater 😢 but I have been knitting for 6 years. So I’m not real comfortable with short rows…is there a pattern you would suggest just so I can make that jump and feel a little more comfortable with sweater knitting?
I felt intimidated by short rows also, then watched a Roxanne Richardson tutorial where she took us through several different types, and if you make a swatch and actually physically try them all you will definitely come away from that knowing which type you like the best. For me there is no short row but the German short row, so if a sweater pattern calls for another type I just substitute.
In tonight’s episode of the podcast, I’m ranking all of my sweaters from least favorite to most favorite and giving a brief pros and cons of each. It’s a longer episode this time around and full of cozy, sweater-y goodness so join me! ☕️

I have a video all about this, available on the WOOL NEEDLES HANDS Patreon. 👍 www.patreon.com/posts/89668948?
Your sweaters are all lovely . I like the no frills sweater best and Felix 2nd. Glad your back and hope you had a great rest
Knitting my first sweater. You convinced me to knit a Felix Pullover! Just found your Vlog and just love it!
The purpley tulip would be really pretty with a crisp white button down under it 🤌🏻
I was thinking so too.
No Frills is in my que. I have some beautiful navy yarn that may fit the bill. Thank you Taylor!
Loved your knitted projects.
I’m impressed- you manage to pair yarns and I have the worst time getting the drape elements that ayarnsttracted me to the pattern in the first place! I do find I have better results with LYS yarns vs big box yarns, tho but budget limits me!
Wear the bobble sweater all the time the color is beautiful on you.
Very pretty sweaters. Love them all. The first one, your number 10, looks so comfy! 😊
I love the Felix and am knitting the cardigan with homespun yarn ❤
Welcome back! Beautiful sweaters. Might try the no frills ❤️
I love your Franken sweater. Please share more details on the patterns you used cause I'd like to knit one for myself 😊
Welcome back 👏👏
Enjoyed this episode. Got me thinking about my stash of jumpers/sweaters.
Thank you Gael! And I’m glad this was inspiring. ❤️
Yum...love all those sweaters!
Omgosh! Your home is beautiful! You decorate just like me!!! I would love to see more!❤
I like a crew neck or mock turtle neck more than other necklines for sweaters.
I turn my knits inside out and hang to air over night then fold and put up. I don’t wash unless I get something on it
This is a great suggestion!
Before I really started watching the video I was wondering how that wonderful navy and burnt red sweater you wear would fare in the list. It’s my favorite. Lol.
Embrace the bobbles. I love them.
I love bobbles! I'm about to finish a sweater which is full of bobbles!
You’re definitely overthinking the bobbles. Wear it. I made this sweater after seeing yours. I don’t wear mine enough though because the yarn I used is a bit scratchy. Not bad so maybe I just need to wash it again.
This was such a cool video.
I love your colour combinations!
I loved the cardigan you made!
Ha.😂 I'm so glad you're back I missed you.❤
Taylor, I love your energy and love your always useful info. Can you recommend a de-piller for sweaters? Thanks!
Mauve goes with everything. Fight me. 😂
I mean, I don’t believe it goes with EVERYTHING…😉
Missed you…I have that Magnolia sweater in my favorites..may just give it a try!❤️
Thank you Janice! ❤️
small world we were in williamsburg last weekend too! ❤️
Hi Missus Earl. I enjoyed the video.
Gorgeous sweaters. I'm wondering...if I bought the Felix cardigan pattern, would it be easy to make a pullover from it as well?
Very easy to follow the pattern and so comfortable don't worry try it !!
My favorite was your no frills sweater.
This is fun.
Haha it’s a little-known sport: sweater fondling! 😂😂😂
It’s quite the event. ☺️
I know you don't want to write up your Little Black Tee design, but can you recommend a pattern that is similar?
When you say “rapid decreasing” at the cuffs, what do you mean? I like bell sleeves as well, but I never know how many stitches to decrease and how to space them. Any tips?
I got you covered! Watch for today’s video. I answer your question there. 👍
Do you have any interest in knitting the Felix cardigan? I just finished the pullover and it’s great. I’ve also knit Amy Christoffer’s pressed flowers cardigan and it’s just so my favorite for many reasons so I’m tempted by the Felix cardigan 😊
This is a great question. I actually answer your question (specifically) in today’s Midweek Ramble. ❤️
Thanks!
Thank you so much Jannet!
I have yet to make a sweater 😢 but I have been knitting for 6 years. So I’m not real comfortable with short rows…is there a pattern you would suggest just so I can make that jump and feel a little more comfortable with sweater knitting?
It’s much easier than you think! Just jump in!
I garde, just jump in! I knit my firat sweater last winter, just began my second one on Halloween!
@@Knitting_in_seattle great, thank you!
@@sunrhyze that’s great! Thank you
