    A 450 is perfectly fine stock with suspension mods. After that, it’s the rider preference that matters I.e. ergo and comfort. I was told this by a factory mechanic

      Nope. Just full A kit suspension. These guys would just blow through stock suspension even with stock motors. The simply carry so much more speed than average joe. But manufacturers need to sell bikes. . To average joes.

    ‘08 CRF450 could still go out and win. That bike was the culmination of the best 450 motor and chassis Honda ever made.

      @@tankeater Oh, and yeah, they were absolutely de-tuning them ‘05-‘08. There wasn’t a single factory guy who didn’t plainly state that if you built the motor, you would not be able to hang on for 30+2. Also, not a single engine builder. They focused only on dialing in throttle response and making a linear power curve. Ask around, sport 😘

      @@tankeater “The first generation of four strokes in racing.” You sure about that kid? Pretty sure Yamaha started it in ‘97 with Doug Henry piloting the YZM400 to a title. Then they released the production YZ400F that same year. In 2000 they released the YZ426F. Honda dropped their first CRF450 in ‘02. Any other stupid ideas you’d like debunked?

    I agree a lot with the justifying your job thing but also believe most of their development for future models comes from this process and sometimes you go the wrong way. You have to work thought it to get to the next level. Food for thought.

    Coop Webb’s previous Yamaha contract forbid him from riding a stock yz450f. He was only to ride the works bike

      The Yamaha Factory management were really headstrong as to what they wanted to do with the bike, too. Chad Reed went back there around 2015 or so and they fought with him over how the bike would be setup. The Star guys are far more flexible.

    You saw that with Dean Ferris. He rode the stock based Yamaha, far better than he did the Factory Yamaha. He got a 2nd on a stock bike, and was flatout battling for 10th on the Factory bike.

      Ty Masterpool went to 450s in MX because you can be competitive on a near stock 450, but the 250s need a ton of money to keep up.

      I dont know how the 2013 KX450 is left out of the best bikes ever made conversation, still the fastest stock 450 ive ever ridden and its not even close, that bike felt incredible. Ill take it every time over the 2008 CRF.

    I wonder if they are afraid of the small possibility of stock frames braking in pro races and making the brand look bad?

      Thats what came to mind for me as well. How well would a stock frame hold up without the bracing? The frames don't need to be more than stock if everything goes right, when the rider can be smooth and suspension is good. How about when things go wrong? The pros will crash really hard, pick their bike up, and be at it again like nothing happened, or case something hard. How many hits like that can a stock frame take before it snaps mid race? Also, I don't know how long they run the same frame in the bike. Do they use it for the season, or are they replacing it regularly?

    Think of MotoGP vs WSBK - I think in MX it is so much about feel that the stock frame provides some guys the feedback that the seek.

    If taping a jam donut on the tank makes a rider faster, then do it... A happy rider is fast rider. Or do it to prove they are wrong, From a psychological point of view, how does saying "No" help the rider mindset?

    So you have several full-time people, some may do nothing but chassis tuning, some just for suspension, some just for the motor, then you think these guys are going to let you go out with just a $10k stock bike? What would you need them for if it worked?

    The team spends hundreds of hours testing and setting up a new race bike and just abandon the bike from last year that was perfectly set up and getting great race results. Would make me crazy as a sponsored rider to have to throw away a bike that really suited me for one that was terrible.

    Pretty sure Ama has required stock frames since 1986. The bikes have to be production based. That's one of the main difference between European mx. They get to use prototype frames. That's also why all the odd ball race bikes pre 86 disappeared.
    So altering stock frames is there only option.
    And they need to sell that bike to average Joe's. Who would find the frames they need far to rigid.

      No such thing as a magical bike. Sure every once in awhile a rider will strike gold with a bike but it’s still got quirks to it. They best guy is the one who can put up with the quirks the best.

    Brad Lackey raced a works Suzuk with Simmons forks. Suzuk were furious, told him to take them off. Bad Brad said no and went on to win the 500cc World championship. Even though he won, Suzuk didn't resign him. Factory bikes back then were completely different to what you could buy. Good days.

      I don’t think homologation was a thing for dirt bikes back then so the pros raced something that came out a few years down the line for the a public. Like how MotoGP is.

    They won't let the run stock frames because they're very afraid of having a frame break. Sales and internet memes they'll never live it down. I know a local Fast woods guy here that broke I believe 3 KTM 250SX frames in one season. He doesn't even ride hard moto and mostly hare scrambles.

    This isn't the only time I've heard of a factory team refusing to allow development from a stock bike. Must be some serious egos to put ideas ahead of results.

      @dormantmenace yes but gussets can be added, different engine mount brackets can be used, offset bearings in the head race can be used, subframes can be modified or changed, transmission ratios can be changed, so the whole feel of the bike can be way different from stock.
      I think that's what the riders were talking about. The already-stiffened chassis is less liked and the teams won't let them start with a more forgiving chassis.

    This is nothing new. Jeremy McGrath had the same issue when Honda went from steel tube frames to the beefy aluminum frames. McGrath wanted to stay with the steel frames but wasn't allowed to. He said that the aluminum frames were to stiff.

    Not politically correct, but since a few years already I suspect some teams to manage their bonus budget by limiting their bikes, for their 2nd rider sometimes, but even for their first rider too. Some years, some teams are saving a ton ... Pretty shi.... if you ask me but I must not be the only one to have some doubts.

      That's Honda. They develop a bike, have a ton of success, then go backwards (look at the first aluminum frame, McGrath left because of it). Look at MotoGP and Marquez. Honda won't fix the bike, Marquez goes to Ducati and is instantly faster on a bike he doesn't even know. Honda can be great, but Honda also has an ego. When they get it right they are unbeatable, but when they get it wrong they get it REALLY wrong.

    Banning works bikes in the USA has just made racing less exciting , we have to wait year's to get bikes the rest of the world has ridden for a few seasons , it used to be so cool seeing the different works parts being raced and tested every week

    It makes no sense. You think Honda would be happy that their stock off the showroom floor bike is that competitive that a factory rider prefers it. That is the kind of thing that sells bikes. Not changing everything for the sake of it to the point said factory ride is unhappy with it. It’s almost as if they have to change stuff in order to justify their job and budget. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    I hate when you use initials on this show. I don’t have time to follow moto like I used to so I have no idea who BT is. In this case your guest said it, but you often do the same. Maybe think about that and explain it. Same goes for “Coop”. That could be Justin Cooper or Cooper Webb. Obviously you mentioned a fallout with KTM so that means you were talking about Cooper Webb, but by making things confusing or ambiguous, you’re selling yourself short and maybe alienating the common fan of your channel and/or moto in general.
