James Cameron is spot on and I think that, despite his seemingly calm presentation, that he is in a cold fury about how reckless this operation was.

I was wondering why James Cameron was not speaking out about it prior to the news coming out. He knew immediately and respected that the timing was not appropriate. Much respect to him and Bob Ballard.
Cameron made perfect sense when explaining his reason for not immediately coming out with what he thought. Can you imagine that ? Someone who doesn't instantly flap his mouth, even though he probably is correct in what he thinks. Very rare nowadays.
Victor Vescovo was asked to comment. He said I cannot right now, I have friends down there.
It is rare. Takes self discipline. Sometimes that comes with age, but even most older people have knee jerk reactions to everything these days…
hearing him talk about how he knew instantly it was gone and having to sit there and watch a hopeless rescue mission while keeping his mouth shut to the public must have been excruciating.
As an engineer, thank you for speaking up for tested and improved design, and design being certified and regulated. It’s sooo important and this didn’t have to happen
Cameron nailed it! I'm a retired engineer and for decades I had to defend good engineering and "standards of care" against managers, promoters, and "creative engineers" who pushed "out of the box" solutions.
I just wish the father wouldn't have took the son along and said maybe the next time it's a very very sad situation

Thinking "outside the box" when the box is being subjected to some of the most extreme conditions that exist on this planet is some serious hubris. Submersibles are built the way they are - and with the materials they are - for a REASON.
They rushed Challenger and it was a disaster.
For those who only know James Cameron as a movie director. James Cameron is a real submarine engineer, designed his own submersible and he took double digit deep into the ocean. 3 dives into depths 3 times the titanic graveyard. So Oceangate is not making any new grounds by going to the site. Plenty of others have gone way deeper than this. So many ignorant people in the comments.

@@jayme3181 That's extremely ignorant of everything James Cameron has done over the last 40 years. If he's not an expert in this stuff, nobody is. You may not like him as a person (I'm not sure if I do), but the guy has been hugely instrumental to this field and has had to solve rather complex problems regarding submersibles, both in and out of his filmmaking. He's been incredibly innovative in shooting movies underwater, to the point where he had to design systems that had never been tested before WHILE keeping his cast and crew safe. And the movie stuff is nothing compared to his real life accomplishments that squash your comment flat instantly for anybody that actually knows about the guy.
Dont forget he is the FIRST person to go solo to the deepest part of the ocean 11km below sea level!!!

Cameron's spiel on how this all revolved around engineering is spot on. Lack of engineering and much negligence.

They chose the wrong engineers and then the CEO lied about having the design conducted by Boeing, NASA and a university
Loads of negligence multiple warnings were given on what needed to be done but owner said the cost was to high so due to greed 5 lives lost including his own to save a Buck! It’s shameful! 😢

I think his extremely talented and hard working team deserves more credit than you're giving them. He even said on his way up "*We* did it. I'm just the unlucky SOB that had to be crammed in this thing"

Not only that but he has travelled to the titanic with submersibles I think 33 times, probably more than any one man. If anyone knows what they're talking about it's him.

They and Cameron knew all along they were dead and why yet didn't have the honesty and integrity to tell us the truth, and I did think they all sounded extra mealy mouthed. James Cameron has been saying he knew on Sunday that the sub was crushed. There was a recording of it imploding at the same time they lost contact and they new it all along.

Thank you both for your insights into this tragedy. "Tragedy" is the right word for this. As with the Titanic, the primary human failing of pride got in the way of sound knowledge and a deep concern for safety.
James Cameron hit the right tone perfectly. Compassion for the victims and sober, no nonsense criticism for the irresponsibility and hubris of Stockton Rush, then back to the compassion, especially for their families.
And don't forget he got to discuss his own stellar accomplishments.
Most of the discourse I have seen has been "They were rich so I am glad they died". The world is a truly disgusting place. Compassion is the only thing that should be happening right now, criticism can come later.

It feels really refreshing to have a news segment where someone actually speaks like a human being and not relying on emotions to cause fear mongering. Lots of respect towards Cameron here, he explains a lot of complicated subjects in such a digestive fashion, that's a great skill to have.

was here to write just that,such a good reporter also asked really good articulated questions. was just a pleasure to listen if u can say that considering the outcome of the whole scenario. I think Cameron has a much more strict oppinion on the whole situation, i believe he didnt wanna say more bad things about stockton and the whole expedition just out of respect for the families that lost members, but its obvious even to a civilian like me that this was just crazy and stocktons ego is what drove them to their tomb.

I also am a master Mariner although I have been to the Australian Maritime College unlike you I operate Damen Shoel buster tugs all over the coast of Australia. I have completed many rescues as well as huge construction projects. My biggest being the HPX3 Construction project we built 3 coal terminal's from sea to shore. Anyway here is where I disagree with you. I cut my teeth in Sydney Harbour..I worked for Polaris Marine mostly in salvage and rescue here is where I disagree with you. Ok the Titanic is a wreck a very famous one. Now I have brought many wrecks to the surface and obviously with wrecks come bodies, I have recovered a total of 28 bodies 6 of those being my friends. I Strongly mostly commercial diver's I don't know you're background but those 6 friends were very rich and wanted to find treasure offshore on various wrecks. I consider wrecks a Graveyard and they need to be respected. I have left the industry because a rigger called Max was decapitated during a salvage on Sydney Harbour. I saw his brains splatter all over my deck and u had to call his family, a wife and 4 kids. I'm happy for you to dress up in a suit and tell stories but I have first hand experience of billionaire's begging to risk the lives of themselves and my crew to find treasure, and the most disrespectful thing I witness is whenever we found clothing, shoes etc, these indian billionaire's would just push to find"treasure" I was discusted by this behaviour. Come on a salvage with me. We can charter a vessel and you will see why first hand I do not like billionaire's like you that make places of rest a thing of glory for you and your rich friends. Again you have blood on you're hands...

Massive respect for how Cameron breaks down the issue. He's clearly upset about what happened in an industry he knows well.
Yep. No one has violated or exploited Titanic's memory more than this man. If anyone knows anything about desecrating Edwardian-era watery graves, it's this guy. He raped the whole memory of the place by using it as a setting for his juvenile, grotesque rom-com movie and turned it into a circus for two decades. He's as much to blame for all this as anyone.
The reality is that 1,500 people died at that site. The ship is a rotting hunk of nothing. It's not hauntingly beautiful. It's dead. By romanticizing what happened and forgetting WHY it happened, people have kept risking people's lives for years just to go get a ghoulish glimpse. It's time to let it go.
I don't say this about Ballard. He's a scientist who explores. He contributed research through his expeditions. he found the ship in the first place back when survivors were alive. There was a purpose, both scientific and personal, for that discovery and for those trips. They weren't joyrides or research for a fucking movie that didn't have a purpose.

While the movie was indeed a box office, and I have to say one of the best movies ever made, production-wise, it’s the catalyst that further sparked the curiosity of so many people to dive deep into that gravesite. There are tons of videos, photos available online & even a museum dedicated to the Titanic. I don’t know what else people want to see or discover from it. Let the dead rest in peace & leave that cursed site alone.

@@ko7577 The difference being that Cameron recognized the dangers of submersibles. The wreck is beautiful in a macabre way in the same sense as murder is fascinating to people. The movie was fine; Its purpose was to make money from the average crowd, not satisfy some random guy 25 years after its release still hung up on a tragedy from 112 years ago.
I don't see how his influence is the cause for a poorly design sub imploding. Why anyone would board a uncertified death trap is beyond me. That sub looked less advanced than subs from the 1980's(I.E. The sub that first explored Titanic). Was the lack of certification, wireless controller, discount lcd screens, no seats, sharpie labels, and complete lack of any back up systems not enough to scare people away. I'm more confuse as to how you become a billionaire without common sense.

I knew he’d gone down to see the Titanic once, but not until this interview did I know James had been down there THAT many times and so educated on deep dives. He knows what he’s talking about. Great interviews with two *experts.*
Not just apioneer, he can be called an expert on deep submersibles. Together with a marine engineer, he designed and built his own sub to dive down to the deepest part of the mariana trench, over three times deeper than Titan ever went. And he did of course, he has the honour of being one of the deepest humans in history (LOL) He would scrutinize over everything multiple times, right down to whether they should put a titanium washer in or a steel one.
He destroyed the Terminator franchise with his last disaster of a film.

I'm excited to do more research into Ballard's work. Apparently there's many documentaries and books about his explorations.
This is why Cameron is as successful as he is, he's basically a movie director with the knowledge and understanding of an engineer with a doctorate.

It was an unfortunate event. Unfortunate events are bound to happen when you go 2.5 miles underwater. Unfortunate events are bound to happen when you climb 30,000ft up a mountain. Unfortunate events are bound to happen when you driving an Indy car 230mph. When you make the decision to put your life into these situations, you do it with the understanding of the risks associated with what your doing. You think those 5 souls climbed into that vessel thinking this was some attraction that had no chance of going south? Don’t tarnish their names by assuming their choices were ignorant. This worlds bliss and adventure is constantly being smeared by individuals who think it’s their right to assume responsibility for decisions others make.
Listening to James Cameron, I feel even worse for the teenager who apparently had expressed his fear of the expedition but went anyway because he wanted to make his dad happy as it was father's day.

I can't help but be absolutely furious with Stockton Rush for knowingly and brazenly being so irresponsible as to ignore experts, such as the two gentlemen in this interview, and the entire deep-sea exploration industry and place innocent people's lives at risk. He used lay-people to fund his experiments, for christ sake. Yes, they signed wavers but, as James Cameron mentioned in this interview, the passengers shouldn't have to worry about the efficacy of the vessel they paid $250k to ride in and probably had some level of assumption of safety. This is an awful, awful tragedy for everyone involved.
James Cameron is such a class act. To hear him speak about submersibles compared to Stockton, it’s night and day. James’s focus is on safety & tried and true, proven physics. Stockton wanted to make a name for himself…and he did, in a BIG way. People have defended his quest for innovation and have said “where would we be without innovation? People thought the human body could not withstand 60 mph”.
I say to them -
1. There was/is no need for innovation here. Safe submersibles already exist & they adhere to the laws of physics.
2. You cannot deny the laws of physics. They are proven.
3. You cannot expect 2 types of materials glued together to withstand the pressure of the ocean at those depths over an extended period of time
4. You cannot expect carbon fiber to withstand ocean pressure repeatedly at those depths
5. Why didn’t Stockton heed the warnings from dozens of people? Why??? And why did those around him not reach out to the passengers themselves to say “don’t go!” Yes they would have lost their job but there comes a point when preventing the loss of human life is more important.
I send my condolences to the families of the passengers. Such a tragedy and my heart goes out to you.
Dr. Ballard is one of my heros. Most people know him as the one who found Titanic, but he's so much more. He's contributed so much to submersible engineering, found other wrecks, and discovered life at the bottom of the ocean in the deep sea vents. Before him, no one thought life existed down there.
He revolutionized underwater exploration. He's an international treasure; an Earth ambassador.
I remember him from finding the battleship Bismarck.
Met him years ago when I was training to be an ROV pilot/tech - and you just knew you were in the company of a guy who was the very best in his field. Sub was made from the wrong materials, and this type of extreme tourism isn't going to be low risk for a very long time

This interviewer did such a great job on this one. Started off with empathy for the families, highlighted why these 2 men know more on this topic than most others & then delved into why it could have been avoided. James & Bob are truly exemplary professionals in their fields. I wish this was longer.

Both Cameron and Dr Ballard are spot on in their assessment of the incident and their criticism. The company was warned the vehicle was not safe for that depth and chose to ignore it.
The only solace is knowing their deaths were instant, they did not know what hit them, my thoughts are with the families at this most difficult time.
Even more so, I am a everyday layperson, I can see the problem with this attempt. WHY didn’t the paying passengers do their due diligence? I feel it was so cruel to their families to not determine what could happen and ask about a backup plan. So future buyers of sea or outer space expeditions/exploration BEWARE! Neither ‘world’ is forgiving! It’s definitely a muck around and find out!

The ocean is a deadly environment and respect is a must, We need to manage underwater expeditions with the same rigor as going to space.
Even the rigors of space travel demonstrated could not prevent the loss of two shuttles Challenger and Columbia and their entire crews. Challenger destroyed by a faulty O ring while still in our atmosphere and Columbia burning up during re-entry due to a damaged heat shield.

You can require so much rigor that you end up not going at all. That's also a strategy.
Despite my mild claustrophobia I would go in a certified sub before I would go on any rocket to space. These explorations should not be be taken lightly as joy rides.

I just started watching the deep sea challenge documentary about James Cameron building his submarine and I appreciate even more how careful he and the engineers were to build his craft and why this titan sub failed. Makes sense they already knew right away what happened.

It’s absolutely evil that they gave everyone false hope, especially the family. I had some hope they would rescue them & felt sick when the news came out, & I had never heard of any of these people. I can’t imagine the unnecessary torture they put the families through. It’s shameful, & they should all be held to account for it.

But think of how, they would have been blamed anyway if they had no proof ? How do any of us know what they were privately telling the families ? We don't know what really went on.
When the Titan Submersible first lost contact, they only were able to speculate as to the cause. No one, not even James Cameron or Bob Ballard knew absolutely, positively, what had happened. No one wanted to believe that it had imploded and that everyone was deceased. Hope is the corner stone of mankind. This is why everything possible was done within those first 4 days to try and find the Titan and everyone on board. Even if they had wanted to send another Submersible or Robotic down to the last point of contact, they had to wait for the proper equipment to arrive. At which point they did make the dive and found the Titan. Imagine if they had gone ahead without knowing for sure what had happened and speculated that the Titan had imploded killing everyone and then were to find them alive within those first 4 days. That would have been "absolutely evil". To be honest, Stockton Rush is the only one that is to blame for the tragic event that took place and for the lives of everyone onboard. Their deaths lie at his feet!
These gentlemen are the real deal when it comes to the Titanic...

“This is just engineering” - I absolutely love this quote and James Cameron is completely spot on. If you’re taking the general public on such a dangerous journey you make absolutely sure this thing is structurally impenetrable. Such an avoidable tragedy and Oceangate are fully to blame.
Unfortunately, they literally signed off their death waivers prior hand and Oceangate will have 0 liability or responsibility.
This was a great interview and they broke it down so the average person could understand. It’s very clear what caused this accident. They knew the moment they heard it lost contact.

it’s pretty wild that he started as a film director and has since become a world expert on both the titanic and its wreckage, as well as deep sea diving into in general. i have a newfound appreciation for this guy over the last few days just learning more about deep diving and what he’s done for the field.

The 19 year old didn't ignore the warnings - according to his aunt, he was afraid to go down and didn't want to, but ended up going to try to get closer to his father and to make his dad proud. It's sad that the only one with any common sense was the youngest and the one with the least say in the mission.
James Cameron summed it up perfectly - an avoidable tragedy. These 'reckless entrepreneurs' need to be held accountable for their self-indulgent actions. My heart goes out to the 19 year old who had his whole life in front of him.

Any of us who are "qualified in submarines" (I served on submarines from 1999 to 2003) could look at the boat and give him three or four things that are missing that he needs to add.
And yeah, carbon fiber doesn't seem like something that's going to withstand the pressure....but you know things like that, he needs to test that with no humans board. We do it regularly on military submarines, it's called a "static pressure test".

I think those knocking sounds underwater story was just utterly brutal. That was like giving their families the nightmarish despair & panic of their loved ones stuck under the whole sea.
Imagine the trauma if one has to endure their family member's whole suffering every minute for days & you could do nothing but burn with the anxiety that their loved ones were experiencing...

James Cameron totally hit the point, and the fact there was no remote submersible on the mothership to assist is a massive point! Even if these guys had just suffered a power outage or loss of control, the fact the closest rescue solution was 3 days away is just mind-blowing. With a backup, they could have been down in a few hours to hook on a recovery line. That would have negated all this talk about 96 hours of life support. In the end, it wouldn't have prevented a structural failure, but expertise, experience, good engineering, review and due diligence would have! Rush was nothing more than a fantasist with zero common sense and way too much control. THIS is why CEO's should not be directly involved in the engineering!
Yeah, if he had thought to invest in a rescue solution as a need, then he would have invested more in the original sub in the first place. Maybe nobody would have died. But unfortunately he didn't think that way and it cost him and four others their lives.

It's funny you think of James Cameron as a film maker (which he is), but he also has visited the wreckage sight of the Titanic 33 times and even has been to the Mariana Trench (the deepest part of the ocean). He is literally an expert about deep sea submersibles by this point.

James Cameron is obviously a great director but also knows his stuff about Titanic. I also always liked Ballard and enjoyed his National Geographic specials back in the 90's/2000's about discovering the Titanic, the Bismarck and other shipwrecks. I once remember that he laid a plaque by the Titanic asking that future explorers be respectful of the site & not take artifacts away from the wreckage. But, as usual, many greedy ppl ignored his request & took lots of stuff anyway.

As a structural engineer, James Cameron just pointed out two of the three areas that stand out to me as being poorly thought out.
1) carbon fibre is non-ductile and is very direction specific in terms of strength, so it lacks durability and doesnt give much warning before failure
2) The plexi-glass dome window at the front looks to be inadequate given the very high loads
3) To connect the fibre-glass hull and titanium dome, it looks like they used epoxy to glue a titanium ring to the fibre-glass so the two sections could be bolted together. The use of epoxy in this situation seems totally inappropriate.
Exactly my thoughts. That glued ring failed. And carbon fiber cracks under pressure. Its like Tungsten vs Titanium. Tungsten may be harder but it shatters under a hammer.
I like how in another interview James Cameron said Carbon fiber delaminates, where as titanium and steal does not. And that the Titan most likely had alarms that would go off in the sub if the hull was beginning to delaminate
My Buddy just said something similar. He said Carbon fibre performs even worse under stress at those temperatures they would have faced at that depth. Also, mentioned the Glass looking like Spanky and Alphapha from Our Gang took an old dryer door off and stuck it on a cylinder with Epoxy which has ZERO Flex when cured.

At a microscopic level the expansion and contraction of the composite hull would weakened its integrity.... The former owner had got away with 10 previous dives... On the last.... the contraction of the materials was too much to withstand the pressure it was being subjected to... it would have been a bit like squeezing an egg.
