The Story of the Turban - BBC

  • This documentary traces the history of the turban in the Sikh religion, from its roots in India, through the battlefields of Europe, to the fight for British Sikhs to wear it without fear. It reveals that the turban is a crucial symbol of the Sikh faith - one that Sikhs will even risk their lives for
In September 2011, Sikhs from all over Britain gathered in Parliament Square to protest. The focus of their concern was the turban. Since the terrorist attacks of the 21st century Sikhs believe their turbans have singled them out for discrimination. In a case of mistaken identity the Sikhs claim they've been wrongly regarded as religious terrorists and subjected to increased airport security searches.

I am a white English man. And I am proud that Sikhs fought with us in two world wars. They are a kind, humble and peaceful people, who would lay down their life for you. If you have any other unkind or racist view of them I suggest you read a book or two and educate your ignorance.

He is not confusing Sikhs with Muslims. He is a Hindu and probably RSS supporter. Their dream is a big Hindu nation and want to convert Indian subcontinent to a Hindu nation. And, they hate Sikhs because Sikhs have been fighting for independent Sikh Nation which was existing before British dissolved it in 1850ish.

Thousands of Sikhs fought a war for which they never started and still fought by those brave men whom they never accepted as Sikhs or people wearing a turban. They fought by their fellow brothers without any discrimination.

An amazing story of an amazing people. The Sikhs deserve a tremendous amount of respect. In some ways their story has a somewhat remote similarity to that of my own people, the HIghland Scots, who had their own cultural markers which have been interpreted with varying degrees of contempt and tolerance throughout British history.

nothung i say is 100 percent as i am not sihk but my understanding ( and i could be wrong) is that a sihk who chooses ( not all do)to wear a turban will also stop cutting there beard if they have one. theres a sihk woman who's relitivly well known online who has a disorder and grows facial hair. when she decided to begin wearing a turban even she stopped shaving. they also usualy wear a steel bracelet and carry a comb and a crerimonal dagger to symbolize there willingness to fight and die to keep others ( not just other sihk ) safe. aside from that truthfully i almost never see Muslims of middle eastern decent wear a turban. i thonk that is more common of Indian and Pakistani Muslim. and they do not look like people of arab decent to me.

Turban is considered as a symbol of honour in India. It has a special place in Sikh history. Sikhs used it as a mark of distinction and defiance against Mughal empire. Apparel was one thing, carrying weapon ( Sword,Kirpan) just to protect personal or communal honour was another distinctive feature of Sikh people.
Fight against Mughals was a David Vs Goliath affair. Tiny Sikh hordes had no match for mighty Mughal armies but they showed extreme resilience for their honour or perhaps their survival.
Early struggle of Sikh faith leaders left a great legacy for future generations. They put up a very impressive show in Anglo-Sikh wars. Initially, British hesitated to take them into the army. But their martial abilities were recognised after the mutiny of North Eastern units when Britain turned towards Western side, Punjab and adjacent areas. Sikhs responded to the call of British Army and fought gallantly in all the wars.
So far as wearing turban in England is concerned, they eventually got their right to wear the turban. But Sikh leaders should have adopted a liberal approach in this matter. Future generations of European Sikhs are bound to leave these symbols anyway.
Giving right to wear a turban was a great gesture from British government otherwise they had lots of other ethnicities with their distinctive appearances or apparels.

Miss Pearl S. Buck, a noble laureate, while giving her comments on the English Translation of Guru Granth Sahib, wrote, "I have studied the scripture of great religions, but I do not find elsewhere the same power of appeal to the heart and mind as I find here in these volumes. They are compact in spite of their length and are a revelation of the vast reaches of the human heart varying from the most noble concept of God to the recognition and indeed the insistence upon the practical needs of the human body. There is something strangely modern about these scriptures and this puzzled me until I learned they are in fact comparatively modern, compiled as late as 16th century, when explorers were beginning to discover that the globe, upon which we all live, is a single entity divided only by arbitrary lines of our own making. Perhaps this sense of unity is the source of power I find in these volumes. They speak to the people of any religion or of none. They speak for the human heart and the searching mind."

The opinion of some Hindu mystics also need to be quoted to know their experiences with Sikh faith. Swami Nitya Nand (expired at the age of 135 years) writes in his books "Gur Gian": I, in the company of my Guru, Brahma Nand Ji went to Mathra...while on pilgrimage tour, we reached Punjab and there "We met Swami Satya Nand Udasi. He explained the philosophy and religious practices of Nanak in such way that Swami Brahma Nand Ji enjoyed a mystic lore. During the visit to Golden Temple, Amritsar, his soul was so much affected that he became a devotee of the Guru. After spending some time in the Punjab, he went to Hardwar. Though he was hail and hearty, one day I saw tears in his eyes. I asked the reason for that. He replied, I sifted sand the whole of my life. The truth was in the house of Guru Nanak. I will have to take one more birth in that house, only then will I attain Kalyan." After saying that the soul left his body.
Swami Nitya Nand also wrote of his own experience: I also constantly meditate on WaheGuru revealed by Guru Nanak. I practiced Yoga Asanas under the guidance of Yogis and did that for many years. The bliss and peace that I enjoy now had never been attained earlier.

It will be interesting to know the comments of Dr.W.O.Cole, Chairman Consultant, Religious Education Projects, U.K. who has written half dozen books on Sikhism. In 1985, he visited India where communal disturbances had created a virtual turmoil and thousands of people had been killed. He gave a message to Punjabis (through them to the whole of humanity): Remember the tenets of Guru Nanak, his concepts of oneness of God and Universal Brotherhood of man. If any community holds the key to the national integration of India, it is the Sikhs all the way.
After a key note lecture by him on the "Mission and Message of Guru Nanak" he was asked what drew him to the study of Sikhism. He replied, "Theologically, I can not answer this question. You may call it the purpose of God. But to be more specific, the unique concept of Universality and the system of Langar (free community meal) in Sikhism are the two features that attracted me to the study of Sikhism. Langar is the exclusive feature of Sikhism and found nowhere else in the world. Sikhism is the only religion which welcomes each and everyone to the Langar without any discrimination of caste, creed, color or sex."

***** Well dont drag the whole of India into this. Sikhs are about 1% of a country of what 1.2 billion? But the majority of immigrants from India in the UK are Sikh Punjabis so I dont blame you. I dont think youd think a Manipuri or a Tamil looks the same as one of those pakistanis.
I dont understand why you hate sikhs so much. Theyre educated and work hard and integrated. You should blame your country for the big sikh population as your British people ruled Punjab for ages and developed close relations with the sikhs and invited them
to the UK to work in the factories and rebuild buildings. Sikhs fought for the British in ww1 and ww2 in europe and China, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma and India against the Japanese...
      Btw asia means the whole

Arnold Toynbee, a historian who has done much work in comparing cultures writes: Mankind's religious future may be obscure, yet one thing can be foreseen. The living higher religions are going to influence each other more than ever before, in the days of increasing communications between all parts of the world and branches of the human race. In this coming religious debate, the Sikh religious debate, the Sikh religion and its scriptures, the Adi Granth, will have something special of value to say to the rest of the world. In other words, it is not only Sikhs who see that Sikhism unlike most other religions is a philosophy which has validity for all cultures but non-Sikh writers also endorse this view.

  • @BDSingh1
    @BDSingh1  7 років тому +9

H.L.Bradshaw, a well known professor, after thoroughly studying the philosophy of Sikhism observed that Sikhism is a universal world faith, a message for all men. This is amply demonstrated in the writings of the Gurus. Sikhs must cease to think of their faith as "just another good religion" and must begin to think in terms of Sikhism as being the religion for this new age. The religion preached by Guru Nanak is the faith of New Age. It completely supplants and fulfills all the former dispensations of older religions. Books must be written proving this. The other religions also contain the truth, but Sikhism contains the fullness of truth. Bradshaw also says that Guru Granth Sahib of all the world religions alone states that there are innumerable worlds and universes other than our own. The previous scriptures were all concerned only with this world and its spiritual counterpart. To imply that they spoke of other worlds as does the Guru Granth Sahib is to stretch their obvious meaning out of context. The Sikh religion is truly the answer to the problems of modern man. Archer very rightly commented that, "The religion of the Adi Granth is a universal and practical religion....Due to ancient prejudice of the Sikhs it could not spread in the world. The world today needs its message of peace and love."

Another writer Dorothy Field writes: Pure Sikhism is far above dependence on Hindu ritual and is capable of a distinct position as a world religion as long as Sikhs maintain their distinctive. The religion is also one which should appeal to the occidental mind. It is essentially a practical religion. If judges from the pragmatically standpoint - a favorite in some quarters - it would rank almost FIRST IN THE WORLD (Emphasis by the author). Of no other religion can it be said that it has made a nation in so short a time. Field further observed: The religion of Sikhs is one of the most interesting at present existing in India, possibly indeed in the whole world. A reading of the Granth strongly suggests that Sikhism should be regarded as a new and separate world religion rather than a reformed sect of Hinduism.

I think the agenda was for British Sikhs and the troubles they faced in this country trying to retain their identity.
It is true that many faiths have turbans not just the Sikhs, in fact the first turban came from a Persian sultan and the Arabs later adopted this tradition and so too did the Turkish people. Afghanistani people also wear it and even Rastafarians in Jamaica!
I think this documentary was just exclusively for Sikhs in Britain.

There's is amazing history behind it.

There's been a lot of explosions, flying bullets, and careening buses over there since this video. I came here trying to find out the Origin of the Turban. Did it come from the hot deserts of The Middle East or the Sikh in India? On a brighter note, what came first, The Chicken or the Egg?

What ever we did for the people weather its serving the nation or defending the religions of many people we dont ask anything in return. We dont want any wealth of urs we did beacuse our pitaji our Guru thought us to do so. All we have ever asked is the respect that we deserved. And still u have to criticize us we wnt mind because when u r born to stand out people will criticize you. And whenever i wear a turban i feel like a king being crowned when i am tying it. PROUD TO BE A SIKH!

British knew if they clipped the two strongest powerhouses of India (Punjab and Bengal), they would effectively cripple independent India. It wasn't so much for religion being the motivating factor, Jinnah was a scotch drinking, bacon eating, tobacco smoking tweed wearer, completely contrary to the popular image of 'founder of the nation' of a so-called Muslim country (Pakistan - east & west). He was a convenient tool in British hands. The subcontinent is still paying for this decision nearly 3/4th of a century later.

Actually Sikhi never had identity as religion basically Sikhi is branch of Hinduism!' All 10 Gurus were Hindu and worshipped Lord Shiva all their life. After death of Shree Gobind Singh ji's some violent people started wrapping towel on their head and named it Sikhi. Even in Islam mostly violent people like Osama Bin Laden , Bhindrawala and other terrorists keeps long beard and turban but basically this is dress of goons to terrorize innocent civilian!!

+Bravepunjabi sikhism is not a branch of hinduism or any other religion,it has its own philosphies and its has its own identity, our guru's only worshipped one supreme god (Ek Onkar) and sikhism is against idol worshipping
Guru Gobind Singh Ji made this rule for sikhs to wear a turban, and dont u dare to call it a dress of goons,Bin laden didn't wore a turban he wore a different thing, turban is a symbol of loyalty, courage, bravery and devotion,Lions wear turbans not goons, you need to educate yourself on Sikhism first

well you clearly don't understand sikhism do you. Its not just about taking it off, read bit of sikh history and you will know more about turban. Just read about our 10th guru, his father, his grandmother and his four sons and you will get an idea about what a turban means to sikhs. Sikhs face a lot of problems in the west due to their turbans because westerners don't know about sikhism and also thanks to that asshole osama bin laden, wearing a turban and having a beard, a lot of people have the absolute opposite view on the turban. Only times sikhs take turban off are for instances like recently in punjab a little girl fell into flowing river and was drowing and a sikh took off his turban and used it to pull her back up or when a sikh guy in new zealand took off his turban to use it as a cushion for a kid who got injured in car crash and his head was bleeding.

You will only pull fat 25 stone single mums or money grabbing bimbos.
Your teenagers are lost...either pretending to be white...or pretending to be black...depending what shade of color they are themself.. but talking with a fake indian patois accent is comical and also show how fucked up and SIKH in the head you lot are.
have a read of this..Its from a fellow taliban

I suppose poor personal hygiene and generally using a sweaty tea cosy over your head isn't going to help either.. You live in false glorification. In the UK Enoch Powell mentioned his Rivers of Blood speech referring to your unwashed tree worshipping cow dung eating community. How you made your self look cool I dont know..I guess if you keep on repeating that you are beautiful every day , than you start believing it.
